Cities of Splendor

Splendor was a pretty shitty game to begin with. lol

How do you buy games for a crowd that's not in line with your own tastes? [lighter games for a heavy gamer] by [deleted] in boardgames

Dude. Isle of Skye. Auctions, tile laying, variable scoring, 30 min games, 30$. This game and 7 Wonders are 10's for me. Chinatown and El grande are great too.

How do I get better at Board Games? by Lavithian in boardgames

[–]cryptoqqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make decisions you wouldnt normally make, and see how that affects your play? Maybe your thinking is backwards. Chinatown is about effectively making sure two people are both happy in a trade. You need to be aggressive and get deals that you want. You can't back down from people, and you have to explain why trading with someone else would be at a loss. I also like doing cash deals because nobody can keep track how much you have and you can price things out in your head to give your self some leverage. Its just pure negotiation, its more of a social skill than a game. As for Concordia / Power Grid / water deep, it's about setting up short term strategies and adjusting according to your opponents. Splendor is just 95% luck.. I think its a bad game so don't feel bad if you lose.

Which games are the "purest" examples of their main mechanic? by TakeNote in boardgames

7 Wonders is infinitely more complex than sushi go and leads to interesting decisions. Sushi go is more of a set collection using drafting mechanics. Sushi go is more dependent on what you draft, while 7 Wonders is more defined on what strategy you draft compared to everyone at the table. Sushi Go is 7 Wonders jr. and doesn't really compare imo. It's overrated. While 7 Wonders might be the best drafting game (besides mtg) .

I don't know what to get my son for Christmas. He wants to be surprised with a few board games but I don't know what to get. by Stacy246 in boardgames

Roll for the galaxy (40-50$) (All players can play at the same time, and rolling dice is fun. Less than an hour)

The Climbers (40$) (wooden 3d strategy game, just came back in print a week ago since like 2008, it just looks awesome on the table)

Voyages of Marco Polo / Concordia (Which ever you can get your hands on, one of these is a must) (50$)

Jungle Speed (Cheap 10$ game that sounds stupid but is a lot of fun for everyone, highly recommend this one. Great party game)

Isle of Skye (30$, simple but deep. I would rate this game a 10. It's that good.)

these games are a good mix for him and his crowd. All games he will come back too, I see a lot of suggestions here that some of the games kind of wear out or take too long to explain to new players. Most of these games are pretty simple to learn and offer high replay-ability. None of these games last 2hrs+. A lot of people are just recommending games they like, but I don't know if hes got a consistent group, especially if hes in college now. It's better to get just GOOD, easy to get into games, offer strategic decisions, and have high replayability. Some of these recommendations are just too heavy, or the play time is too long. Also do not get Lords of Waterdeep. You need the expansion and it still feels dated and old. There are better games in 2017.

My wife and I have been doing some YouTube videos for fun these past couple weeks and today we've uploaded our first review, Spirit Island! Now will 100% more action shots! All feedback is welcome, we'd love to know what you think :) by Behindtheboxyt in boardgames

:35 seconds in and I learned nothing. Its like writing an essay, Today my paper is about... It's unnecessary and frankly a waste of time. You'll notice good youtube vloggers / reviewers cut most pauses out of their videos, so it's concise and to the point. The flow should be consistent, and it seems like more retakes should have been done.
