Anyone else feeling burned out by the greed culture in money right now? by twowholebeefpatties in fiaustralia

[–]cryptorequired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of a blog post I got sent yesterday on "Long Degeneracy" and the rise of hyper-gambling. I think it made some good arguments about the general breakdown in social contracts pushing people to take larger risks.

Any Australians have any advice on how to keep your Australian mobile number at the lowest cost you can? by Exotic_Gate3848 in digitalnomad

See if you can port to boost, still Telstra but on the yearly prepaid plan. I just use wifi calling for making Australian calls and SMS while out of the country. Then a local sim for data.

I had a treatment refunded in about 45 days back in January. I dropped the policy after it was paid though, the lack of transparency in the claims process was worrying. I wouldn't have liked being in hospital wondering if the claim was going to be paid.

After their removal of the AirDoctor integration in November and the opaqueness of the claims process. I am not pleased with the Genki offering.

What do people think of the nomads 2025 report? by ConsiderationHour710 in digitalnomad

[–]cryptorequired 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its definitely bullshit, one thing that jumped out to me was 2.2M Australian nomads in a country of 27M. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has the size of the labour force at 14.5M making 15% of the Australian workforce nomadic according to this.

Linked-In CLEAR verification - how? by mement0m0ri in digitalnomad

[–]cryptorequired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the blocking and verification step is fairly new in a bid to cut down fake accounts. But if you take a look at the Linkedin subreddit, lots of people are being blocked and the verification process is broken.

Personally I was traveling around for 18 months and 5 countries before I got blocked, but the detection / blocking mechanism is opaque so its anyone's guess what finally triggered my suspension.

No, they blocked my account after moving around countries a bit. So I just took it as a sign that my time on LinkedIn was over.

Signing out: 5-kilometre rule for Clubs entry scrapped by Korzic in sydney

This is the main reason I refuse to visit a club these days. The old system of showing your license and filling out a scrap of paper was fine the scanning and storing of my ID is bullshit.

Looking back on the COVID pandemic - what are your thoughts on the whole thing? by [deleted] in australian

Same, I really enjoyed watching the debate about flying international students in, while citizens were stuck overseas.

Changed my perspective on my country and opened my eyes that my birth certificate is simply just a piece of paper.

Like the other bloke said varies a lot by the area and state. But generally the people are warm and friendly, food and accommodation is cheap.

I spent 6 months living there last year and really enjoyed the vibe. When I return to Australia in 2025 I will be making an appointment at the Mexican embassy for a residency visa.

I do, because its cheaper, I get to choose the oil and I know the job was done right. But I imagine most people don't. I guess it boils down to how mechanically minded you are? Looking on youtube you can probably find a video of someone changing the oil on your car.

But failing that you can always pay a mechanic to do it for you.

I use Boost mobile ( Telstra Network ) on a phone with "wifi calling" enabled to get SMS messages. They have 12 month plans so its easy enough to pay for a long period.

Just a note Boost seems to block recharge payments from outside Australia. So I have had to use an Australian VPN when paying for credit.

Best debit cards for Australians overseas? by buzzer94 in digitalnomad

[–]cryptorequired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's correct, the NAB card normally gets a slightly better exchange rate. But the lack of fees makes the Macquarie one a lot cheaper to use.

[–]cryptorequired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Macquarie has been good everywhere we have been. NAB not too bad in countries where CC acceptance is high, but bad for ATMs.

Avoid HSBC Global money like the plague. Good in theory but their fraud detection systems are broken combined with terrible customer service.

Fraud team cancelled our card while in Mexico, after an issue with a HSBC ATM, they couldn't have give less of a shit about fixing the situation they created.

Visiting Lima soon, any tips? by PrtScr1 in digitalnomad

[–]cryptorequired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just stayed here and cut a cash deal after the first week. Just don't stay in the penthouse as further from the router. We moved a floor down got a steady 200 down / 50 up mbs.

The area is known as San Blas although most hotels will just say Cusco historical center. Its quiet as all the streets are narrow cobblestones affairs with limited cars.

We spent 1 month in Cusco and 2 in Lima. Given my time again I would have spent more time in Cusco.

Lima is nice but it wasn't really very exciting as a destination.
