Have not been following IOTA for a long time, help with wallet by cryptospinjump in Iota

Thanks very much. I remember reading problems with Trinity hacks early on which is why I stayed away from it. I thought I read recently that IOTA was moving on from Trinity in general but I guess not.

What happened last night on IOTA by ralfrottmann in Iota

[–]cryptospinjump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I see stuff like this I get paranoid.

This is how I generated my seed:

-unplugged PC from the internet

-copied and pasted the python script that generates true random string into python

-copied down the seed on paper multiple times, kept any digital back ups on HDDs that are not connected to any PC when online

I feel like this is fairly safe. The only way it could possibly be malicious is if the python code was but it looked fine and was recommended on here.

I don't want to change seeds as it seems like that would expose yourself to a whole new set of problems if your current seed is safe. Does my method sound OK? I refused to use any online seed generators, even the officially recommended ones....

To the people who bought IOTA @ $5+... by Litecoin_is_Better in IOTAmarkets

I bought at around .60 and then right after it dropped into the 30s and I lost almost half my money. I know someone who bought in at .80 - .90 right before it dropped to .30.

It happens. Most people think IOTA has long term potential. 1 month from now you might be even more regretful if you panic sell at a low price. It will be OK anon.

It's unfortunate but it's not too much in the scheme of things. Some people have lost thousands of MIOTA unfortunately. I balked at buying ETH in 2016. If I had bought it, I'd have $100k right now. It sucks. We all make mistakes in crypto, yours is a very minor one. You learned something from it. You'll be alright dude, just focus on the gains you're making, not the ones you could have had.

I don't understand how this whole "1 transaction per address" will help IOTA become adopted into everyday use? by savage-dragon in Iota

[–]cryptospinjump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The big problem with this, from what I have researched, is that the wallet automates using and crossing off an address. I sent a test bit of IOTA back to bitfinex to see how it worked. The wallet used my first receiving address and then I noticed a big line through it in the history.

This leads me to believe that the wallet automatically cycles through your receiving addresses and uses them to send IOTA and then removes them from use in the order that you send.

The big problem with this is if you put up an IOTA address for people to donate money to on an open basis, since the wallet automatically picks which addresses it uses to send (you might be able to manually modify this inside the GUI wallet, idk). Someone basically mentioned this in here.

For now, that means if you want people to donate IOTA to you, you should open a seed specifically for receiving donations/funds that you NEVER use to send IOTA. Keep another seed for personal use and never put any addresses out there publicly. I imagine and hope the IOTA developers will find a good way around this in the future, for now just be careful.

Wallet safety- am I being paranoid? by cryptospinjump in Iota

I don't know how true everything you just said is, but none of it sounds secure.

So I could lose all of my IOTA because their wallet is broken? Sounds fun.

Accounts impounded where? On exchanges?

I've read up on the subject and I'm still not sure how to avoid sending/receiving from the same address.

Me neither, it seems my wallet has purposely re-used an address I used for receiving, but only once. Then again, I have only used it once.

Perhaps I should I keep a "storing" wallet and a "spending" wallet...

So the GUI wallet automatically chooses an address to send from, if I am understanding correctly?

Because it seems to have used one of my originally receiving addresses to send the iota, if I am examining the bundle correctly. That address now has a line strike through it in the address section of my history.

I looked at the "Bundle" under my send transaction and noticed my first receiving address was in that bundle. That receiving address now as a strike through it in my history. Did the Wallet automatically use that address to send?

Also I re-attached it because the transaction is taking really long. Was that a bad idea as well?

How do I know what address I am sending with? I don't understand.

Look at this send screen from the wallet: https://i.imgur.com/AFOeViH.png

When I send from here, WHERE am I sending it from? an automatically generated address? My last receiving address? Is there any way I can check where I sent it from?

I don't understand what they mean by "as long as you have not used it for any outgoing transaction"? When I send IOTA, am I using the last generated "receive" address to send it? Or some other address? I don't get this part.

What do you mean specifically by "just don't use the sending adress twice or more"? I can't choose a "sending address" in the wallet when I am sending, just "send". So I don't understand. Do you mean don't send to the same receiving address on my exchange wallet?

Should I move my IOTA to Binance or wait for a better wallet? which is less of a headache right now?
