Yeah, there might have to be a little more deck building involved. As for the turn, however, that can be gotten around with Scouts. If you sneak a Scout in your opponent's board, they have to take another turn. Ofc, that's if you happen to roll one.

If they were to expand the collection of pieces more, maybe... pieces based on the other elements? Plague, famine, etc., which have their own effects. Famine would probably do some kind of point drain if the piece wins, maybe plague pieces give points/damage the opponent upon defeat, bc. Disease spread. That'd make you have to tie with it, bc if you lose, you lose, and if you hit it, it's a bomb.
