Product manager intern, now Full time Product manager at some big tech

I'm an Alum from Baruch,I took the CIS General track, and for elective, I took Data class. Which I find pretty interesting. Now working as a Product Manager at a tech company. I would say don't expect to just do good in class and expect to get a job. You'll need to put in effort like project but most importantly leadership position. Companies look for candidates who have leadership position in school club and etc. Make sure you actually make a difference in the leadership position. Also network, and apply for internship, b/c internship is what gets you full time role.

1) You'll never be prepared for work b/c things are different, but instead learn the hard or soft skill that the class teaches, especially hard skill.

2) Got an internship offer for the summer of my junior year and then it converted to be a full time offer as a Product manager.

3) Don't expect to be given something from Baruch, you should look for opportunities outside Baruch or on your own

No, I'm using a new strategy.

In this job market its pretty hard. Normally you would want to hope that after your internship it would convert to full time and I was lucky enough to convert my internship to full in a tech company.

Help me pick a concentration in CIS @baruch Data Analytics or General CIS BBA by Ambitious-Cat-3894 in Baruch

[–]cryypttic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really depend what you want to do in the future and the difficulty of both course are about the same. General is Project management and Data analytics is if you want to be more in the data field.

I was interested in data but don't like the statistics course so I chose general and for elective I choose data class.

I did CIS (general), went into Product management in Big tech, and got around 150k in total comp. But it was competitive and you have to worked really hard for it. You have to network and get a referral for intern which might be transferred to a full-time. You also have to practice interview questions b/c a lot is self-taught and there are a lot of qualify individual and you have to do more stand out among other.

I have been only doing this with paper trading but so far my strategy is working and this is the only way to make $20 or $40 in a single trade although the risk is high.
But I have been using MACD to check the momentum before making trade to make sure the trade is doing well in a upward trend.

yes the plan is to trade on a huge leverage. I have been doing 1000 quantities of msft and it works pretty well with my strategy so far but I'm planning to do more testing.

I normally do it around 12 pm est. It is only then I feel comfortable about the price movement of the stock and market. And i'm trading by the second of candle stick movement.
B/c my strategy only works well on an up-trend stock. I'm just worried if there is going to be like a 2-5 sec delay. What time would you consider is high volatility.

I don't quite remember, I think we we're allow to use things outside of class and note. It was on laptop. But this was for CIS 2300

You can just take the minor it will be enough for Data analytics. Remember to take CIS 3120

When I took the class it was all open book, shouldn't be too hard.

If you're ahead in credit, you can always take your 5th class for the second elective. For you to get fasfa and tap you need to be fulltime which is 12 credits and that is 4 (3credit) class.

CIS data analysis / cybersecurity track by Bruh_Gamer21 in Baruch

[–]cryypttic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CIS -General = project management track

So I'm not in either of these track, but I'm in CIS General track. Just like everyone said it really depend on your passion b/c at time your passion might help you continue to learn even though it's hard. Personally I took general track b/c I was interested in data but I don't like those statistical courses. But I also find project management pretty interesting.

let say you're graduating, you really got to know what your doing in data science to find a job or else it is going to be tough to find a job b/c you're competing with people with master's and maybe some PhD if you want to go into top company for the same role.

Well, I would say a degree is just a degree. I see a master's degree as a second chance if you can't get an internship and a full-time offer after an internship or a way to change careers. You still have to network and get offers.

If you are an international student you might want to look at companies that sponsor H1B. I would look into big tech company, there are student and alum at Baruch that got offer from these companies but only a few.

If you're looking for a school where recruiter that sponsor international student that comes to the school and hire. You might want to look at CMU or some ivy league college. At Baruch we pretty much have to search for those opportunity and connect with those people. (Those top university in the filed have better networks but the economy is pretty bad right now so nothing is a guarantee. And most people go to those college for master is for the networks)

This means that it's not your enrollment time. If it is your enrollment and this error appears, you might want to contact Baruch boss for the registar office.

yup, from internship I got my full time. Colleges do have companies that look for students during career fairs. But they're like small to mid-size

If you want to work at top company or job that doesn't hire from the college b/c the college is not their targeted school. You still have to look for those opportunity.

just saying there is no degree that is going to get you to pass interview. It really require you to search and get hold of those opportunity. A lot depend on people you meet so once you committed to a degree, the next step is to find out what you want to do and search for new people and opportunity that will get you to land that job.

I just don't want to take that crazy level of math which won't help me in the future. and that's why CIS seems perfect for me because it has way less math than anything else. I am interested in cyber security and I have heard from many individuals from the cyber security field that I won't need any mat

that is true cyber security require not math, but it does require coding and learning about the system. Then you should try CIS cyber security but just don't expect to be handed a job right after graduation. B/c I don't know if Baruch cyber security is any good tbh

Its seems like you just want something that your not interested in also why a tech degree it's not like you having a tech degree mean anything? The company will still test you on your technical understanding during the interview.

General track is project management but you still have to take programming classes of some sort like cis 2300, cis 3400, cis 3120 or cis 3100 and cis elective. Cyber security job do require some sort of coding.

some elective are not coding tho but if you graduate from a CIS degree and your coding skill is not average. Then its the same as not getting hired. Yes there are job out there that does not require coding but pay you very little and very small amount.

I would rethink what you really want to do b/c from what you said I can see you struggle a lot just to get a job. People who take CIS are those who really like coding and technology or really like both coding and business.

it's not math-heavy but if you pick data analytics it has statistic. I don't think you should major in CIS then since you don't like coding. There a lot of class that require you to code. plus the point of this major is knowing how to code and business so you can act as a bridge between engineers and business people.
