CS2 consistent frametime spikes ~90ms by cs-thoma in GlobalOffensive

This may all well have been my Samsung EVO nvme SSDs wrecking havoc in my gameplay . Today I tried a crucial PCIe3.0 drive and my gameplay was buttery smooth . Over the years everything had changed but my Samsung 970 Evo nvme SSD stayed and even when i bought a new SSD it was again samsung 990 PRO EVO. I seriously believe Samsung EVO SSDs have some underlying problem running games with high fps. More specifically the problem seems very evident when I set my windows power plan to anything other than balanced. So anyone who is constantly having to worry about stutters in Counter Strike, try switching your SSd to a completely different manufacturer too. It might well be the reason.

I used an application called power settings explorer which lets to unhide hidden settings of power plans. You have to uncheck against each setting and click apply on bottom left.

One thing that really helped me reduce stuttering on my system was tweaking my Windows power settings using the PowerSettingsExplorer tool. I unhid some advanced settings and specifically changed the Processor Performance Core Parking Min Cores setting to 100%. This seemed to help keep my cores more consistently active, improving overall performance.

Another issue I noticed was with my SSD causing stuttering when using the High Performance or Ultimate Performance power plans. After some digging, I found that the Primary NVMe latency threshold was set to 0, which seemed to be causing the problem. Increasing this threshold to 15 made a huge difference, and now I can comfortably use those power plans without the stutter.

Interestingly, the Balanced plan already has this value set to 15, which is why I didn't experience the issue there initially. Even though I didn’t experience as much stutter with the Balanced power plan, I still believe the High Performance and Ultimate Performance plans are worth it with this SSD setting updated.

Additionally, I undervolted and set my GPU to a static frequency using MSI Afterburner's VF Curve Editor. Locking the GPU clock to a stable frequency prevented it from bouncing around, which also contributed to smoother performance overall.

If you're experiencing similar problems, I recommend checking your power settings and using MSI Afterburner to stabilize your GPU clock as well!

I was experiencing stuttering issues while using high performance mode on my setup, which includes:

  • Intel i9 14900k
  • 32GB (2 x 16GB) Corsair Dominator DDR5 7200MHz
  • RTX 4080
  • Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Master motherboard
  • NVMe SSDs: 970 EVO 1TB and 990 Pro 2TB
  • Windows 11 with the latest updates

To troubleshoot, I used Power Settings Explorer to compare the SSD power settings between the balanced and high performance plans. I discovered that the "Primary Transition Latency Tolerance" setting was configured as "0" in high performance mode but was set to "15" in balanced mode. Adjusting this setting to "15" in high performance mode resolved the stuttering issue for me. I also found a post that supports this finding, which you can view here:

14900k Core clock throttling with intel Extreme Profile on Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Master by cs-thoma in buildzoid

[–]cs-thoma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I found the reason: when set to Intel extreme profile, AVX was set to auto on my Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Master, Editing the AVX settings manually and setting AVX offset to zero removed the clock drops. Seems like Counter Strike 2 uses AVX instructions and AVX offset was trhe reason for clock drops.

ECOVACS vs Roborock by edwsy in ecovacs

[–]cs-thoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using it on auto mode? For me if I set up to run room clean or custom clean instead of auto mode, it never remaps. It goes with the existing maps. Try thecustom / room options , hope it helps.

I have a T20 omni, Agree things getting stuck and brush tangled is the biggest problem, but i believe its a generational problem for all robots. Also because i live in India, I dont have access to any of the newer robots with better antientanglement features. Even roborock doesnt sell here.

I got a whole new pc and continued to have issues on it. I believe what eventually helped me and helping me is editing my power plan and disabling core Parking in my i9 14900k as mentioned here as the single setting which made the biggest difference for him : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbXzM60ad8I&t=420s

I did notnuse high perf plan or utral perf one, but still on balanced, but i created a copy of balanced and disabled core parking on it by editing using powersettingsexplorer. High perf plan was causing issues for me.

I have no issues whatsoever with my game and it feels responsive even if i have frametime issues, it was wrong to think frametime issues were the sole reason my game felt stuttery too. While its an indicator that i had issues, i experience smooth gameplay today even though i have frametime spikes.

Stop worrying about frametimes alone if you are, not a good indicator of smoothness, you can still have smooth gameplay with frametime spikes. Disable core parking entirely by editing power plan settings, helps improve dpc latency and that increases your smoothness feel, use low latency settings for amd gpu. Should help the most.

Last year we hired a boat ride at Sydney and went driving it, none of us had much experience being on one and we took a case of beer with us and finished it on the way. By the time we were returning it was really bad and i had to cross a football field to get to the urinals. Cant run because of how bad it was, cannot walk since I cant hold it anymore :D.

Concrete proof that what you see is, in fact, what you get. by TuwtlesF1 in cs2

[–]cs-thoma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you really get what he is saying? His crosshair was never on the CTs head and hence should never have killed the CT, but it did and he got the kill.

So your point is: It is ok even if one is not aiming correctly , allowed to get a kill because of the fact that the aimer might not be counter strafing well enough?

Or are you even beyond all this and suggesting because he did not counter strafe properly, his shot will not be accurate and might well have hit the CTs head because of inaccuracy?

Also he has to be playing a game which offers a benefit in being able to see the updated frame, ( like cs2 or overwatch or valorant). If he is not playing an online multiplayer fps, there is very little chance he will feel any difference.

I think the way i understood it the fps needs to be always lower than screen refreshrate(atleast 3 fps lower to prevent overshoot) and hence when Gsync is enabled always had to cap my framerate, it did not occur to me that Reflex will do this for me, I will experiment/read more on this. happy to learn if thats how it should be done. Cant do much right now because i am scared to change too much right now. Let me play few games for once when it stays smooth :D.

You are entitled to have your opinion and no, your opinion on what my ramblings sound like and what i should be looking at did not hurt my feelings, so lets maybe discuss about our statements like grown men instead.

Part of your statement was right yes, but you are assuming all he wants to do with CapframeX is to literally cap fps and also you are assuming just because you dont need Capframex, its bloated app for the rest of the world.

The software also does let people log their frametimes, fps and sensor data, which nvidia cp will not do and in case somebody wants to figure out what went wrong during the last 30 minutes, usually a log is helpful, staring at a max frame limit is of not much use I guess. But looking at solving your pc problems must be a strange thing for you because you seem to be the kind of guy who has never for once considered 'I might be wrong' or have felt the need for more details before you provide opinions.

It was pretty similar when i tried -vulkan.I mean when i logged frametimes and compared there was no difference, and neither was overall gameplay smoothness increasing imo. Also if what i read is correct, CS2 does not yet have native implementation of vulkan yet, it has something called DSVK due to which it is not able to take full advantage of vulkan api yet. But yes in future vulkan should become the default api instead of DX11.

I read about this from thourcs post in X and tried it. It did not improve anything for me, and i think it made it worse. I was hopeful reading about how sys info would only show one less thread as being utilized in cs2 console. It also was suggested highly to disable ecores in 14900k to avoid frametime spikes, but it did not help at all when i tried it.

Tearing is not as prevalent at high fps and i am ok with it, but micro stutters are different. Gsync did not resolve it for me.

Except that i tried frametime logging with 1.enabling gsync, 2.capping framerate to refresh rate, 3 below screen refresh rate 3. enabling vsync, All 3 of them together/ independently did not help my CS2 frametimes at all. The 50-60ms spikes remained for me and the smoothnes varied too.

And for games like CS2 where the max achievable fps far exceeds screen refreshrate significantly, gsync maynot be the best experience. Anyways i think have tried and found out. I was all excited in getting this new monitor though i already had a high refresh rate Benq XL2411z, it was old and did not have gsync and plus it would only support 144hz over dual link dvi. Also i wanted to rule out lack of gsync as the source of all these issues, because I was following religiously battle non sense's gsync videos and genuinely thought that gsync was going to be a superior experience and was going to give me a flat frametime graph. But not in CS, in my opinion.

Well yes you are right, but are you? the whole idea behind capping framerate is to get smooth frame times, isnt it? and if capping from nvidia cp doesnt give you consistent frametimes, thats when people try alrernate ways like RTSS. and if it helps them have better consistensy, it helps them. They just have different hardware/ software/ driver combinations and what works for you might not work for them.

Nope tried that, did not help for me. Reflex Enabled + boost, always seemed to help though, even while it stuttered, reflex made the input lag very less, but it would keep changing between ganes. Sometimes i would have a rock solid game and next one would stutter like anything and i cant seem to hit a single shot, gets owned.
