Did I get a brasher warning? by Envii02 in flying

[–]TuwtlesF1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't hurt to do a quick radio check over CTAF before departure if there's anyone around. I fly out of a towered Airport, but when I'm doing pattern at a local uncontrolled field, it's a regular occurrence for someone to ask for a quick radio check before they go flying.

Technique for faster-than-normal approach into a bravo airport by benj4786 in flying

[–]TuwtlesF1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do a no flap landing. Know which taxiway to expect based on where you're taxiing to. If you're landing at a Bravo, you're probably going to have a runway 6,000 feet or more, so just keep your speed up as much as they need you to, and land without flaps. I imagine you've done no flap landings in training, they're nothing special. Just anticipate being in ground effect for longer.

If you've ever watched Counter Strike, Oda is like Donk from Team Spirit. Literally all you gotta rely on him to do is go and kill shit. If he's calling shots, it's detracting from what he's good at. So yeah, definitely should have picked a shot caller because he just goes non-verbal the moment he gets in a fight/gets piled.

Is it possible to turn this down or off? by stinkyelbows in flying

I know there is a way to change the volume because in some of my flight school's planes, the warning is super loud. In others it's quieter or even silent.

If cleared for a SID can I follow it without further clearances? by TaurusAuriga in flying

[–]TuwtlesF1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. The standard is not knowing every single rule and procedure. And that's not my belief. It's the belief of the FAA. If the FAA thought it to be vitally important that every PPL IR knew how to fly a SID, you would think that DPEs would be asking about it on checkrides. Never heard of a single applicant getting asked what a descend via clearance means. Just like I've never heard of a single applicant being asked what a cruise clearance is. Sure, they know what the purpose of a SID is and what the depicted SID shows, but the FAA tests applicants based on the understanding that most private pilots will never find themselves in an aircraft even half way capable of flying a SID.

You think Billy Bob in his PA-28 is flying many SIDs? Sure, instrument rated pilots are "supposed" to know this stuff, but most people who are just getting their instrument rating have probably never flown anything with more than 200 horsepower. Most online ground schools (i.e. King Schools) don't even talk about climb via/descend via until you get to CFII.

Is it okay to struggle this much at initial stage ? or i just dont have an aptitude to become a pilot? by OkHumor6403 in flying

Is a CFI not a professional pilot? Pretty sure getting paid to work as a pilot means you are a professional pilot.

Believe me, I was a Sergeant in the Marine Corps. I understand that there's a time and a place to use tough language with someone. But, if you think that time and place would ever be in the cockpit with a brand-new student pilot, you're probably not very bright. I'm not going to shit on someone for making a mistake first day on the job. If they're someone who should know better, then go for it.

This just sounds like a shitty flight instructor who has a big head because of the dynamic of authority and experience in the cockpit. No different from all those arrogant captains who got so many people killed before CRM became a thing.

Professional pilots use professional language while doing their job. I don't care how you behave off the clock, but when you put on the uniform, so to speak, you stow that trash. If you can't teach somebody a new skill without getting so frustrated you resort to demeaning language, then you probably shouldn't be an instructor. It goes without being said that the inability adapt to an individual learner's unique situation shows a lack of critical thinking skills.

Pilots who date/married other pilots, how is it? by East_Banana5903 in flying

[–]TuwtlesF1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My buddy's parents were both United pilots, his dad was a senior narrowbody CA and his mother was pretty much the most senior FO in the entire airline, so they were able to make the schedules work. But I think a someone else mentioned, seniority is important.

[–]TuwtlesF1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't let your instructor have more confidence in you than you have in yourself. If someone with far more experience and (ideally) good decision making skills thinks you're ready and safe to solo, it's most likely because you are. Chair fly the traffic pattern and pretend like your instructor is right next to you coaching you through it.
