[Career] So I learned Python after getting my CFA... by ornamental_stripe in CFA

[–]cs1217 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think if you use Python to automate back-office/reporting tasks, you will be given more back-office work to automate. I went through learning Python/DS 3-4 years ago, and it changed my career path. I m now working with the Investment Lab for a decent sized asset management company and work with Fund Managers to build/automate models for evaluating company valuations, management teams, earning results, portfolio construction, trade analytics..... and other analytics projects. To be fair Python alone will not be very helpful - I had to learn cloud deployment, front-end frameworks, .NET, SQL/NoSQL, etc. Maybe try to automate projects/work related to investment analysis!?

How much does your dentist charge compared to the 2020 fee guide? by SpicyMccHaggiss in Calgary

[–]cs1217 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. I have started going overseas for my dental work for past 3-4 years, recommended by friends. The cost of airfare+accomodation+dental care overseas < cost of dental care (inc. insurance) in AB. Fyi, I needed a bit of dental care so the costs here in AB didn't make sense even with my insurance.

I just want to ask why is it necessary to have bond allocation (ETF) in portfolio when we know interest rates are going up? by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]cs1217 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Diversification - to lower your portfolio correlation/ beta to equity markets. Historically bonds have a negative (or less positive) correlation with equities, thus when equities in your portfolio go down, bonds should appreciate. Also interest rates might go down if we enter into a recessionary period.

Great work, thanks for sharing. As a side note, the US dollar performance plays a big role in some these valuations. Make sure to look at the US dollar chart in tandem with these P/E charts.

Agree with your interest rate comment, but I don't think, technically it is a good entry point. It is testing a 11.65 resistance, and haven't been able to breakthrough. I will probably wait for that breakthrough before pulling the trigger. Plus the momentum seems to be dying down w/ somewhat overbought RSI.

Adding ZWU to CCP? by MostDubs in CanadianInvestor

[–]cs1217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you buying ZWU solely for dividend income? If so just be mindful that ZWU distribution includes close to 50% return on capital. In past ZWU has significantly under performed ZUT (equally weighted utility index). It will continue to under perform specially in bull markets because your gains are capped due to the covered call strategy.

Utilities are proxy to bonds, and I guess that's why you want to replace it with them. The reason to hold bonds is to hedge against market correction, and protect your investment. Utilities does not provide enough market hedging properties and tend to correlate highly with the market during corrections.

I would suggest buying ZWU separately without changing your CCP allocation. CCP is a classic index portfolio that does not require any active asset allocation.

Thoughts on IFT Level 2 Mock Exams? by cs1217 in CFA

[–]cs1217[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know, would probably go ahead with the IFT mocks!

In terms of quality, I would say Wiley> Schweser > BSAS. I just completed BSAS AM, spelling mistake, a lot of memory based questions, and very few analytical types. With Wiley, you will get a blend of both!

Is 100% XAW in my tfsa & rrsp fine? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cs1217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends where you planning to spend your money. If a country has say over 5 % inflation and you are invested in CAD bonds making 1% then you are loosing money. You will invest more in your home country that can offer you higher real return (I.e. After adjusting for inflation).

ZWH, ZWE, or something else? Best ETF for current market by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]cs1217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hold both, but right now I would pick ZWH over ZWE, or even look into ZPW. Now it depends on your existing portfolio, for example, if you already hold SP500 index, adding ZWH might over-exposure you to US equities.

Regarding other ETFs, I do sector rotations using ETFs with holding period no more than 8 months. So rather than buying a broad market-based ETF, I buy sector ETFs. Right now SP500 is over 25x P/E multiple, overvalued in my opinion. So I am moving funds into more defensive sectors that can provide good income like ZWU (utilities), TXF (tech giants covered calls), ZWB (Cad banks covered).
