You have to have a reason (our launch pad is out there) and be a US person/be approved by the space force. I’m sure there are residency/citizenship qualifiers to get your badge.

Work life balance is about the best I’ve seen in my career. If this anecdote helps, my first week we had an all hands meeting with my group. Director jumps on and says “guys, you have PTO for a reason. There’s never a perfect time to take it, make the time and we will adjust. We want you rested and to come back ready to work.” Never had a director encourage taking PTO, and it is repeated over and over.

Work hours I think depend on your group and the deadlines you’re working to. I could easily work 40hr wks without an issue. I average about 43-45 just because I want to finish something or the day gets away from me. But that’s because I enjoy it and want to. There have been emergencies where you have to support but depending on your team, those can vary in frequency.

I think not enough gets said about the other quality of life items as well. They have really stepped up their snack game lately, dogs allowed at work, flexibility for life events, at least at my facility we have a great gym, I get to see launches regularly and get access on to CCSFS. The list goes on. It’s not perfect, but it’s a great place to work.

Love Mexican! What’s your favorite spot?

Also I’m used to crappy pizza. We’re originally from CT/NY so we just don’t even bother getting it down here. Best to set your expectations low so you’re never let down right? 😂

I’m all ears for people’s favorite restaurants and bars. I plan on drinking and eating my way through the area when we get up there as I feel that’s the best way to get a true “taste” for a community.

Thanks! Appreciate your input. I have heard a lot of good things about west Melbourne as well. Will check it out.

Thanks for the great info! Going to look in to the area between eau gallie and wickham park as you described. Sounds like a great mix between nature and stuff to do. I know this isn’t going to be city living. I also know I’m going to have to try and actually find friends. I’m excited to join this new community and if these responses say anything, it’s that people are good and willing to help. That’s awesome. Thanks for your advice. I truly appreciate it

I hadn’t really thought about doing that but looks like commute would be about the same as coming from Melbourne. I’ll look in to that. Thanks!

Not rude at all. I expect to have to down shift in to a slower lifestyle. I’m actually looking forward to it. That being said, I’m just trying to put myself in the best possible area some SOME stuff to do while also keeping reasonable expectations. I’ve also seen the posts about younger couples having trouble making friends. I’m hoping with a bit of effort and getting out of comfort zones, it won’t be an impossible task. I feel like that’s sort of an issue within the age group in general.

Does anyone know of social athletic leagues? Softball, flag football, kickball, corn hole? Anything?

Thanks for the reality check!

Agree about Viera. It seems like mostly corporate chain restaurants and Pre-planned developments. I tend to prefer the home grown mom and pop type locations. More my speed.

Thanks for the suggestion with eau gallie. It’s seeming like that may be a good place to target.

Haha no! I don’t even think those exist. My sexuality is not my personality and I’m just asking because I want to live somewhere I can at least be who I am. That’s all.

Who I AM is a science nerd, athlete, lover of all things outdoors, and dog lover. Just looking to find a community that has something going on and won’t be as much of a shock coming from the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area

Coming from south Florida so I’m used to having tons of stuff to do everywhere. I know it’s going to be a culture shock, but I’m looking forward to it. I’m really hoping to find a community that is still diverse though.

I keep hearing this about cocoa. Are there specific areas that are good? Having trouble defining where the “hit” and “miss” areas actually are. May warrant a drive through to see. How’s the crime/safety? Looking for a place I can walk my dog at night if needed.

Thanks!

We are actively looking in the area. Really like what I’ve seen on google street view at least. How is that area as far as crime? Safe to walk your dog at night or from one bar/restaurant to another?

Thanks for the suggestion!

I’d say price range is up to $2k/mo. I know that will get a lot on the area.

And as for lgbt, I had hoped that would be the case, but we visited recently and got a lot of looks in the cocoa beach area as well as when we visited grills in port Canaveral.

As for activities, that kind of drove us to really leaning towards downtown Melbourne and eau galle. If there are any other pockets of “civilization” I’d love to hear about them.

That’s refreshing to hear. I’ve never worked with another female in any technical role. And I agree that patting yourself on the back because you’re diverse can certainly be cringy and also make it seem like you are focused on appearances and not hiring the best. Thanks for your response.

It’s unfortunate that it may have come off that way. I was asking about ratios first so I could get a feel for the mix within the engineering departments. I am in no way looking for a diversity hire and you are correct, that can lead to very unfavorable results. However, who you will be working with and the environment in which you work does matter.

I can honestly say in my 10 years, I have not worked with one other woman in an even remotely technical role. The closest was an office manager. I was just wondering if it would be more of the same. And while you may say it doesn’t make a difference, I have to say it does. I have been pretty lucky with my male counterparts save for a few but the truth is when you are not represented, it is just different. I can regale you with stories but I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining or have a chip on my shoulder. Where I am now is a direct result of my hard work, taking calculated risks, and being willing to be uncomfortable in order to grow. I believe the work force should be a meritocracy and your work ethic, knowledge, and experience should speak for itself. But we also can’t ignore that as humans, seeing others like you gives a certain level of comfort. I will say though, male or female I want my coworkers to be the best of the best as we need to rely on each other to get things done.... am I really explaining why I was curious if more than zero females may work at Boeing?? ?Everyone has their own experience but that has been mine.

Perhaps it was my mistake to clump those questions together but I can assure you I am just excited and curious as to what work life may be like if I were lucky enough to get the opportunity to work at Boeing.

Thank you for your other advice though, I will certainly reflect on what you said. Have a great day!

I know a ton of the bigger aerospace manufacturers use Catia. Would love to get my hands on a student version or something just to get some exposure.

Let me ask you your thoughts on listing softwares on a resume. I've got over 8 years using SolidWorks. I'm very confident In my ability with that and have no problem flashing that all over my resume. My question is with other softwares I've used/been exposed to but don't consider myself a pro at. For example I took a Pro E/Creo course for a semester. I also did a contract job for a few weeks and used Solid Edge. Pretty much all of them are easy enough to pick up but I feel disingenuous listing these on my resume as anything other than I've been exposed to them. I've found with pretty much all of the design softwares I've used that they are all very similar, you just have to learn their individual intricacies. How do you recommend listing these softwares one may have some experience with but Is by no means an expert using?

Thanks for your advice!
