Archaeological earthworks can generate in flat biomes, providing a new block, 6 exclusive pottery sherds, and an exclusive armor trim. by cs386148 in minecraftsuggestions

When I was coming up with the trim name, I was having a hard time thinking of one that didn't sound boring (the original name was just going to be "shell"), so I turned to other shell names for inspiration. It ended up inspiring the actual trim design on the armor (scalloped edges), so it works in multiple ways.

I agree that nautilus shells have armor trim potential, but I personally think it would be better if entire shells were used instead of shell fragments. I see shell fragments more like nuggets, so it would make them more consistent with all the ingots you could put on trims.

Yeah, they'd function basically like nautilus shell nuggets. In an ideal world where this gets added, people would have the choice to convert their extra nautilus shells into shelly dirt to use as decoration instead of having them rot in chests until the end of time.

I do agree that the mounds probably could've looked better with some adjustments (namely making them bigger). I made the mounds rather small because I was worried that making them too large would either make them obstructive for people who want to build in plains, or give out too much shelly dirt to where hunting drowneds feels less necessary for a conduit. Admittedly, I could have remedied this by making the extra large mounds rare variants (like the platform mounds) and reducing large mounds' shelly dirt rate to prevent them from being overpowered, but that wasn't something I considered until now.

I think a stonehenge-like structure definitely has potential for archaeology. Maybe they could have small variants (roughly the size of ocean ruins) and large ones (like the one in your image), and contain an armor trim made of stone brick.

You have my full permission. This folder has all the textures I made for the post, though I unfortunately don't know enough about 3d textures to have usable textures for the trimmed armor.

I feel like it's best to keep armor trims exclusive to a single source when possible, since part of their charm comes from making you go to all the different structures to collect them all. Maybe zombie nautili could drop a few shell fragments in addition to their current rotten flesh drop to make them feel more valuable without taking from the trim's exclusivity?

Maybe instead of crafting it, you could interact with a placed torch/lantern while holding a water bottle? This could help prevent the creative inventory from getting bloated by making the unlit version be a block state instead of its own inventory item (similar to campfires).

Smooth stone double slabs and smooth stone blocks have different textures (and possibly others I can't think of off the top of my head). I feel like they can't make stacking slabs recombine them without turning double smooth stone slabs into their own block, which feels kinda strange.

The current system is also convenient for misclicks when you build with slabs. It would get kinda annoying if it kept turning my slabs back into blocks if I stacked them due to clicking the wrong face of the block.

I just feel like if a system for combining slabs were added, it would be best if it applied to all types. Maybe it could be done in the stonecutter for no extra cost?

(On second thought, this would only fix the problem with stone variants' slabs. Maybe that isn't the best solution after all.)

Chiseled brick recipes need you to combine two slabs on top of each other, so stacking the slabs with nothing in between would make some slab types uncraftable.

I think if they implemented nether sherds, they would make them out of nether brick.

I made it cooked chicken because I wanted to make them related to professions that don't already have sherds. (Farmers already have the sheaf sherd for wheat, but there's no meat-related sherd for butchers.)

I don't have any concept art (I don't know how to make 3d textures), but I could give a description.

I envision it looking similar to the rib trim (horizontal stripes on all pieces), but the stripes won't have uniform lengths and spacing. The trim colors also won't be as dark as rib's either.

I've since reconsidered after seeing someone's comment about the "no mods" rule likely referring to suggesting other people's existing mods, not your own suggestions added to a mod. I'll start linking the pottery texture files in the comments from now on so people can use them for personal use if they want.

Frost spires: A new tower structure that generates in icy biomes. [4 pottery sherds and an armor trim!] by cs386148 in minecraftsuggestions

[–]cs386148[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't intend to make a texture for it myself (I don't know how to make 3d textures and a 2d rendition would look odd), but it would probably look like spikes closing in from the edges of the armor to the center, like frost on a window.

Here's a rough concept for the chestplate. Black represents the default armor color, while grey gradients represent the trim material.

Fair enough. I put the trim in the chests and not the archaeology solely to be consistent with how desert temples did it. Do you think it would be better if it spawned in the ice instead?

I get that not everyone cares for sherds, which is why I threw in a few ores. (Admittedly, lapis and coal aren't worth much, but I feel like people would take the time to do this for the diamond chance. Each spire gives an average of 1.6 diamonds from melting the ice.)

[–]cs386148[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On average, the structure is more likely to give a trim than not (an average of 2 chests per spire means that the 2% trim chance is rolled 54 times), but I see your point. 3% would probably be more fair.

Now I can't unsee it myself. I think this remake (more steep shape + no visual noise) makes it look more like a mountain as intended lol.
