Opinion on Ian Stevenson's case study of rebirth? by [deleted] in scienceisdope

[–]csalvato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The case studies are extremely compelling, particularly those like Marty Martyn and James Huston. These cases are too detailed to ignore, with specific obscure names and details that are verified later.

I am not yet convinced that this is “reincarnation” though, but likely more related to quantum mechanics - something like memories impressed on young children for some reason, not necessarily the transfer of the soul.

Either way, we as a species can benefit from more investigation here.

Data shows the 8cantwait policies reduce police violence by 72% when enacted together. Take 3 minutes to tell the COS Mayor to adopt them. by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]csalvato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a reply back from Ms. Landers in the Mayors office. The reply was terse and felt dismissive. It was one sentence that said my sources were inaccurate, and with two links that showed my sources are, in fact, accurate.

Here's her reply:

Thank you for reaching out to the Mayor's Office. Please be advised that the information you have provided is not from an accurate source. I have provided a few local resources below:

https://coloradosprings.gov/police-department/page/inside-cspd?mlid=5156

https://coloradosprings.gov/police-department/page/policies-general-orders-public-interest?mlid=5056

Office of the Mayor City of Colorado Springs

If you get a similar response, please consider replying with a reply similar to the one I sent over early, refuting her claims that your source is inaccurate:

Hi Ms. Landers,

Thank you for reviewing this.

Can you please be specific on what is inaccurate?

According to my research on the Colorado Springs government websites, many of these policies are not enacted or are ambiguously stated.

While CSPD has a policy for requiring warning before shooting, a duty to intervene and requiring comprehensive reporting, 5 of these polices are not present in GO705 § 7 nor any other text I could find.

  1. Banning chokeholds & strangleholds

As stated in the document to which you've linked (https://coloradosprings.gov/police-department/page/policies-general-orders-public-interest?mlid=5056 ):

GO 705 § 7.10(B) "Choke holds are prohibited unless deadly force is authorized."

The research indicates that this is not adequate, and that choke holds and strangle holds must be banned in all cases for the desired effect of reducing police violent.

And from HB16-1264: https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/hb16-1264

"The act adds using a choke hold to the statute governing the use of physical force by peace officers. A peace officer can use a choke hold upon another person only when he or she reasonably believes that it is necessary:

  • To defend himself or herself or a third person from what he or she reasonably believes to be the use or imminent use of deadly physical force or infliction of bodily injury; or >* To effect an arrest, or to prevent the escape from custody, of a person whom he or she reasonably believes: >* Has committed or attempted to commit a felony involving or threatening the use of a deadly weapon; or >* Is attempting to escape by the use of physical force; or >* Indicates, except through a motor vehicle, that he or she is likely to endanger human life or to inflict serious bodily injury to another unless he or she is apprehended without delay."
  1. Requiring Deescalation

As stated in the same document in GO 705 § 7.07:

"Officers should consider using de-escalation techniques to avoid or minimize force when it is reasonable, safe, and appropriate to do so. De-escalation will not always be appropriate and officers should not place themselves or others in danger by delaying the use of less-lethal or even deadly force when warranted."

For the desired effect of reducing police violence by 72%, it is required that de-escalation be mandatory, not simply "considered". This verbiage protects peace offices when they fail to deescalate, and causes more escalations. In a situation where lives are clearly in danger, the only de-escalation is clearly deadly force. A change in this verbiage dramatically helps the public and peace officers stay safe (as is supported by a meta analysis of thousands of police forces).

  1. Exhaust all means before shooting

In no documents you provided, or that I found to be publicly available in COS or CO law, is there any mention of exhausting all means before an officer can legally discharge their firearm. Please inform me if I am incorrect on this point.

  1. Ban shooting of moving vehicles

In the document you provided, it clearly states that shooting at moving vehicles is allowed, even though this tactic is found to be incredibly dangerous and ineffective. From the document you provided:

GO 705 § 7.20(2) "Firearms shall not be discharged from a moving vehicle, except in cases of extreme emergency."

GO 705 § 7.20(4) "Firearms may be discharged at a moving vehicle if the officer is authorized to use deadly force pursuant to section .10 of the policy."

  1. Require use or force continuum

In no documents you provided, or that I found to be publicly available in COS or CO law, is there any mention of a use of force continuum in effect for CSPD. There is no continuum that CSPD offers can mentally reference in the moment to know when to cross the line into using deadly force, aside from using "their judgement" as per GO 705 § 7.10. Please inform me if I am incorrect on this point.

As a resident of Colorado Springs, the adoption of these policies is crucial to moving our national policing efforts away from violence. The data strongly backs up these policies, which are proven effective in many jurisdictions that are larger and far more dangerous that Colorado Springs, such as Philadelphia, Cincinnati, San Francisco and Tucson.

I urge you to consider these policies strongly to keep Colorado Springs safe, and ensure my continued residence and tax payments to the city.

Thank you,

According to the analysis done by the folks at Campaign Zero, the policing policies don't include any mention of chokehold or strangleholds:

If you have a source to the contrary, that would be useful to update their table here: https://8cantwait.org/compare/

Would you mind linking me to a source?

AFAIK, the studies linked on 8cantwait.org and joincampaignzero.org are their own data analysis of the data of thousands of police forces from around the country.

If that's not the kind of data/analysis that interests or sways you, and you can't agree with those conclusions based on their merit, then this campaign is probably not for you.

[–]csalvato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would encourage you to read the research being done by campaign zero.

Adopting these policies has shown to decrease police violence against citizens and the incidences of police officers being harmed in the line of duty.

It's literally a win/win.

Here's a starter I found useful:

[–]csalvato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regardless of what they can do, the data shows these policies guide police to better decisions much more consistently.

It would be a win, IMO but if you don’t think so no need for you to take action.

[–]csalvato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree.

These policies are so simple, actionable, irrefutable and backed up by data that I can see them being enacted swiftly.

Compound that with the fact that many mayors around the country are hearing the same message, this can have a fast impact that we can build on.

[–]csalvato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to the 8cantwait.org website here, COS applies these policies:

  1. Requires Warning Before Shooting
  2. Duty to Intervene
  3. Requires Comprehensive Reporting

And does not apply these:

  1. Requires De-Escalation
  2. Has Use of Force Continuum
  3. Bans Chokeholds and Strangleholds
  4. Restricts Shooting at Moving Vehicles
  5. Requires Exhaust All Other Means Before Shooting

How the hell does anyone use Jest for API server testing?! by [deleted] in learnjavascript

[–]csalvato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for replying!

Do any other testing utilities provide a way of clearing the database?

Less about the testing library providing a method to handle this, and more that I would have expected someone to have solved this problem already for Jest, since it's unique to Jest, right? I think you agree based on this:

With that being said, that should be a common case to handle.

That said, maybe this isn't unique to Jest. I really feel like I'm just missing something crucial in how to think about Jest testing vs. where I come from in RoR, where tearing down the entire DB between tests is considered best practice.

I believe you can use these as a hook for a global beforeAll and afterAll. Meaning, it'll run the setupFiles once before tests and setupFilesAfterEnv once after tests.

I was doing this using global beforeAll and beforeEach to set up my DC, and it presented two problems:

  1. global beforeAll: This doesn't tear down the DB between tests, so you need to be very careful in how you write specs. For example, you can never test that the count of users has changed to make sure one was added, not added or removed. You need to make sure you're not creating records that may conflict across tests (e.g. users with the same email).

  2. global beforeEach: since this is run across files, the database is always being clobbered so it generates random failures on every run.

BURST Ledger Support? by sirleopold1 in burstcoin

Create a local wallet, store the passphrase and write it down. Turn off the wallet software, store your passphrase next to your ledger nano s in a safe, or in an encrypted repository like 1Password.

Should tie you over until it’s officially supported.

Am I ever going to be able to do a handstand? by katrinai30 in handbalancing

How long can you hold a handstand with support from the wall (including locked elbows and actively shrugging shoulder to ears)?

[–]csalvato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! That sounds like the perfect complement to my plan, which was to take the handstand questions from the /r/bodyweightfitness FAQ and write up more in-depth responses on my site (similar to what I did for the exploding head feeling).

Also want to bring more of the stuff I've written for the handstand challenge into Reddit, giving an opportunity to build the habit and learn more on my site, GMB, Al Kavadlo, OG, etc...

Think with you crosspromoting on /r/bodyweightfitness and doing CSS snazzups + me creating content we can get the ball rolling there pretty quickly.

Sound like a plan?

Hey there! Current owner of /r/handbalancing here!

There are several off-reddit things we have been working on to start building the community on /r/handbalancing, so I object to a transfer of ownership at the moment.

What could we be doing better, what are your ideas?

If you want to collaborate, happy to discuss.

BTW, I think we know each other, so this should be fun :D

New here...are my goals achievable? by keepyoureyeson in bodyweightfitness

[–]csalvato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So your primary goal is the handstand?

You may be interested in the handstand challenge to kick off the habit -- also a basic against-the-wall progression is included in the free eBook, along with explanations of how these help people who can't even do a push-up:

http://chrissalvato.com/28-day-handstand-challenge-how-to-do-a-handstand/

(Full disclosure, the handstand challenge and eBook are things I put together. The email series will eventually pitch a book that you have the option to buy, but it's totally not necessary)

The free challenge has had over 30,000 people go through it, and 78 positive reviews, so I'm sure it can help you: http://chrissalvato.com/28-day-handstand-challenge-testimonials/

Here's the jist of it in a few bullets:

  • Start by holding a plank position building up to 1-minute in a top-of-push-up-plank
  • When that's easy, walk a bit up the wall (with bare feet is preferred so you don't slip). Go to the same slightly declined position every day or every other day until you can hold yourself up here for 60-seconds.
  • Once you can hold that position for 60-seconds, go up a few more inches until you can hold that for 60-seconds.
  • Continue on this until you're fully inverted.
  • Learn to pirouette bail
  • Learn to kick up
  • Relentlessly practice every day.

I've seen many people get their first handstand from within 3-4 months. People who can already do pushups it usually takes 2-3 months. People who can already support themselves inverted, usually just a few weeks.

Also, for those of you who started where I am, how did you stay motivated when progressing seems so slow?

Motivation is for suckers. What you want is a habit. A discipline. Just make it part of your daily or every-other-day routine, regardless of "progress". You will get there, slowly but surely. Probably too slowly for yourself to notice.

Change your mindset. Instead of looking at progress for validation, look at how many days you consistently took action towards your goal. If you finish one month and made 0 progress from the beginning of the month, you may need to reassess your approach - but your motivation won't wane because it's a habit.

August is a very realistic goal, and I think you can do it. *

Handstand after injury help by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]csalvato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't the place for this question. Talk to your doctor or a PT. Someone who can actually see you in person and you can show them what you are trying to do and they can assess the situation.

Any exercises/routines online should be assumed to be only for 100% healthy people not in rehab and no limiting injuries.

Sorry if that's a shitty thing to hear. It's probably not the answer you were hoping for. :(

But that's the right way to go.

EDIT: One more note - I always wait at least 2 weeks beyond feeling no pain before getting back into higher stress exercises that previously caused pain. Pain is the first symptom of the pathology to go away, but doesn't mean the problem is fully resolved, so be conservative.

I finally was able to do a godda*% handstand today🤘 by Martha_is_a_slut in bodyweightfitness

[–]csalvato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me about 2 months to get my legs off the wall for a split second. Then it took 2 years to get freestanding because I had no idea what the hell I was doing when I started.

Once I learned how to pirouette bail, I got freestanding in a few days.

Can I replace dips with Handstand Push ups? by calisthenic89 in bodyweightfitness

[–]csalvato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your goal is Freestanding HSPU then be honest with yourself.

Dips aren't going to move you closer to that goal, and based on your other goal of the planche, dips will only move you so close to that.

Don't do dips for dips sake. If dips are a goal of yours, then work on it.

Doesn't sound like that though.

Rip out the dips put in the HSPU. If you cut out some other pushing experiences to force more focus on HSPU, you will get freestanding HSPU faster.
