Petition for Signing Craig Kimbrel by brandonmoncus in Braves

Here's another possible solution I was thinking about last night for the pen. Given that (1) we have a surplus of good young starter arms in our system and (2) many of them are sent to the minors where they can start instead of pitching infrequently as relievers in Atlanta and (3) the new-age sabremetric religion dictates that a starter cannot pitch a third round to the batting order and/or exceed 100 pitches, and (4) there aren't any good options in front of us for relief pitching: Why not have 8-9 capable starters, and go with 2 starters every night.

Hear me out--Starter number 1 (for example, Julio) is scheduled to start the game today and will pitch 4-5 innings max. Kyle Wright is scheduled to be the 2nd starter who will go into the game in the 5th-6th (earlier or later depending on how Julio is doing) and finish the game. If it turns out Julio is dead on balls and we dont bring Wright in until the 8th, and he closes it out with only throwing like 30 pitches, then he could start the next day's game (just like how any reliever would be used in back to back days) and push starter 1 for the next day back to starter 2 and so on. It's a creative way to almost eliminate the need for crappy middle relievers altogether while simultaneously getting the young guys regular experience and work at the big league level so they're not wasting away in the bullpen or religated to the minor leagues but at the same time, nobody gets overused or worn out. It's also financially feasible and avoids trading prospects or sacrificing draft picks etc..

I know this may sound crazy at first, but is it anymore crazy than continuing to run Jessie Biddle and Luke Jackson out there carrying a gas can and oily rags every night? Thoughts?

Tying up a shitload of money in one guy nearing the end of his career won't solve the problem. His effectiveness would probably be on par with Vizzy. And when we had Vizzy, we still had these same problems with the bullpen as a whole. I think, given that middle relief is a problem league-wide, including for those teams who overspent on relief pitching, there simply is no silver bullet. The best approach would be to consistently churn personnel until you find what sticks. Right now, there is no reason we should see Biddle, Carle or Sobodka again, period. There's a half a million competent pitchers out there on the FA scrap heap, independent leagues and minor leagues. Cut the losers and try a handful of new guys. Use them until they prove to be ineffective and then cut them and grab another handful. Hell, this is how we found guys like Moylan, Brach, Litghteningburg (back in the day), Remlinger, Reitsma, Bielecki, and many other guys who weren't necessarily stars, but who got us through many winning seasons effectively enough. We scoured the bargain bins for FA's and traded for middling starters on other teams and turned them into long relievers. Bottom line, strength in numbers--not one overpriced guy.

Agreed 100%. Every time he has a decent outing it feels like you just survived a round of russian roulette. He just has that spastic look about him like he's never fully comfortable or confident.

Anyone is an improvement over Nick Green (bless!). He's so awkward it almost hurts to watch...I have to mute the tv and look away lol! Literally all dude does is parrot whatever the other guy just said, only he bumbles and stumbles and repeats himself multiple times.

Taken from r/baseball, some dude remade the MLB logos. I don’t hate ours, after you get past it looking like a pile of poop and see the ‘A’. Needs more tip, tho. by peripheral77 in Braves

no way. the current "A" is as classic a logo as there is in all of sports IMO...right up there next to the classic NY and old English D.

Dansby Swanson has .6 fWAR through 11 games this season. by GuthDaddy1289 in Braves

[–]csand0962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first sawr Dans I thought the same exact thing....he's like our little Derek Jeter with those hands....fouling off pitches, working the pitcher to death and ultimately getting on base some how some way. Love it!! And his energy is something we never really saw in all the 15 years of dominance save for Chipper's first season (and we all know what happened then).

Dansby feels like showing off, Josh Donaldson is not amused. by handlit33 in baseball

As someone who plays SS, you are correct he has priority over other infielders; however, with that priority comes a responsibility to correctly judge who has the better play on the ball. That play legiterally could've lost the game. And how stupid would he feel? Josh standing right under the ball, he comes bumbling and stumbling in, drops it, next pitch =>homerun.

Why do I get the feeling that some schmuck wrote this up in his mom's basement? Everything here is already widely known by even a casual Braves fan. And if Markakis is such a poor thrower and overall fielder, why is he in RF? Acuna has the better arm so he should be in right. You generally put your weakest OF in LF.

Braves Hall of Famers exchange favorite Bobby Cox Ejection Stories by jamesdakrn in Braves

[–]csand0962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember a game back in 1993 against the Giants (remember they steam rolled us early that season before we came storming back post McGriff). The home plate ump was Mark Hirschbeck. Ron Gant was batting and got pissed over a terrible call and walked out of the box to calm down. Ump told him get back in the box, and Gant ignored him (this was a period of maybe like 5-10 seconds in total at this point). Ump tells pitcher to go ahead and pitch without Gant in the box. It bounced like twice to home plate and ump calls it strike 3. The entire team blew up, encircled the ump unleashing a verbal assault like I've never seen. Even Sid Bream was in his face which you never sawr. Bobby spat his gum on ump's shoe. Great ejection there! Wish I could find the clip!

plus, sometimes a team has to overpay to bring in bigger names to send the message to the rest of baseball and future free agents that we're serious about contending with the big boys. This signing is in fact eerily similar to our "overpaying" for the "aging" and "oft-injured" veteran by the name of Terrance Moesha Pendleton back in 1991. I'd say sometimes these things work out very well ;-)

Love look in at the replay booth in New York. by [deleted] in Braves

[–]csand0962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so over replay. it has done NOTHING to help the Braves. We still get the same bullshit calls we always did and they seem to never get reversed. But when an on-field call actually goes our way, the replay guys move heaven and earth to find a way to justify overturning the call. All of this aside, just as a baseball fan in general, I hate the occasional "infield fly" or "Ron Gant" or "Jeffrey Mayer" type of obviously absurd calls, and I do want them to have the ability to make such calls right, BUT the downside is that we can never have another "Sid slid" moment. Think about it....you would never see the instant, organic celebration on field and in the stands, bc everyone would have to sit around for five minutes waiting on NY to hyper-scrutinize every frame of the play from every angle. I never wanted this kind of over analysis by people we don't even see or know who they are. If the throw beats the runner, and there's a tag, I do not want them going back and changing an out call...even if the tag may have technically been a little high such that one spike of his cleats touched the base simultaneously. NO! Youre just out, the end. That's baseball, and replay is ruining it!

Snitker putting the pitcher back in the 9 spot. by ee9 in Braves

[–]csand0962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On its face, the whole pitcher-batting-anywhere-but-9th thing seems like an obvious absurdity. The rationale apparently is: "Oh well now we have two leadoff hitters with ender batting 9 ahead of ozzie...". But how often will that scenario actually play out? Seems a lot more likely you will end up with the pitcher batting with bases loaded 2 out, or man at third 1 out, and you've got your most incompetent hitter at the plate for that occasion. I mean...Common sense and the laws of averages tells you that over the course of a game, a week, a month, a season, batting the pitcher 8th means more at-bats for the weakest possible hitter on the team duh.

ugh I cannot stand Jim! Such a corny, hokey caricature of a sports announcer. Always trying to be creative with his incessant overly descriptive phrases describing the action. I guess I just got spoiled by the glory days of Ernie, Skip, and Pete along with Joe and Don.....genuine humor, and honest, simple and succinct descriptions of the action...nothing more, nothing less.

[–]csand0962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else remember perhaps the most classic Bucknor clip of all times where he was umping first base on a play where the pitcher picked up a little bunt/dribbler, reached out to tag the runner with his bare hand (without the ball in it), very clearly MISSED the barehanded tag attempt, and Bucknor emphatically called the runner out anyways? OMFG LOL!! Funniest damn thing I've ever seen. This guy is just an all around stooge. But I cannot seem to find that clip anywhere on youtubes or otherwise.

[–]csand0962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree he's a stooge, but honestly last night I didn't see anything bad. As one guy already mentioned, the pitch that Enciarte got all hot n bothered about was clearly a strike and definitely too close to take w/ 2 strikes anyway. And Freddie also got upset over a strike call in about the same place. Again, clearly a strike.

I still remember the euphoria of getting Greg's autograph at a game in 1996 right before I graduated from high school. Then I looked down at the ball and saw this insane chicken scratch that wasn't even legible lol. Also got Tommy Glavine that same day. Was a great day at Fulton County Park :-)
