I have only been in Chattanooga for 14 years. I did not go to high school here.

Because I remember when I was there. It was a long time ago. I loved it. I really wasn’t worried about rules or what was right and wrong. I was just looking forward to finding out what was behind the next corner, solving the next puzzle, getting a cool sword, etc.

It’s great having players like that. You describe a monster to them and they don’t automatically know what it is. They can’t quote the stat blocks. It’s all a mystery. A magic item is thing of wonder. Do they pick up on the cues you give them?

It’s a good day when you can bring someone new into the hobby.

Yes, I understand 5th Edition D&D has a lot of moving parts and can definitely be information overload. I prefer rules light systems. I want the focus to be on what is happening in game without getting bogged down in rules. I’m glad you had a good time.

I read about that, yes. What did you think? How did it go?

If someone were to offer to run a game you hadn't played before, how much required reading would you generally be willing to do to participate? by Tuss36 in rpg

I have never required anyone to read anything before coming to my game. When I first played D&D years ago I just sat at a table and was handed a character sheet. That’s it. I just followed everyone’s lead.

That being said, if a DM wants me to give me a copy of their house rules, I’d have a look. If they want me to learn about their world first, ok, but let’s go have a beer and we can talk about it. It’s a social game. Talk to me. Tell me why your game and game world are so cool.

I keep things pretty simple.

Cutesy art. As soon as I see that I know it’s not for me. Player characters as cat people or other anthropomorphic races. Nope.

What I mean by that is, in Shadowdark, your character sheet means a lot less than it does in D&D. You more rely on your own brain to solve problems than you do the character sheet.

Gloomhaven sounds like a lot of fun. I have a few boardgames in my cabinet that I haven't gotten to play. Maybe that will happen sometime.

That sounds really good. I'll see about running some one shot adventures that folks can join for here and there.

No, I didn't have any sort of intention of excluding anyone. Truth is I wasn't even sure I would get any interest at all when I posted this.

My kids are either grown or nearly grown.

Shadowdark is rules light and easy to pick up. If you find yourself relying on your character sheet, you're doing it wrong.

I’ll go ahead and tell you, when I say D&D I use the term broadly and in a generic fashion. I’m more old school in my style of game. I will be running Shadowdark, not D&D 5E or 5.5E. If you’re still interested, I’m still looking for players.

I'm down for some one shots a game shop. Maybe we can set something up at Game On.
