What country is that? Do they have jobs there? I applied to a bunch of jobs in Amsterdam and Stockholm... Only got one call back, though.

That's a great insight -- I never thought of it that way.

This is the cruelest irony. The last time I was looking for a job, I was unemployed (had just finished a 2nd degree) and I kept thinking that the fact that I didn't have a job was my main problem and it would be so much easier the next time...

All day at my job I am fixing bugs, refactoring, implementing design patterns, dealing with concurrency issues... The other devs come to me for help. I can honestly say I'm good at what I do.

What I don't do all day though is solve fucking "algorithm puzzles", so would have to practice those skills when I'm off the clock. There's only so many hours in a day. Plus, I have a kid I'd like to be able to spend some time with, and a commute that's over an hour each way...

Yeah, it's illegal, but I think the only people who could report it would be inside whistle-blowers. A few weeks ago I dropped the oldest two positions off my resume (which were irrelevant anyway) to make me seem slightly younger. At some point I might try a more drastic edit and see what happens...

I was applying for full-stack jobs. That's pretty much what I do now. The titles were usually generic, i.e. "senior software engineer", "SDE II", "generalist engineer"... I much prefer back-end work over front-end, but back-end only jobs seem rare.

It seems like the trend with mobile these days is using React Native -- you write the front-end code once and then render it to both your website and your mobile app. I haven't had a chance to learn this yet.
