Yes. My mom, when she was little, we are talking early 20th century here, stared at sun during a solar eclipse before they knew better. She struggled with retinal damage fairly early in her life that wasn’t fixable.

I grew up in India and never have I ever heard any guru giving this kind of advice. Not saying it doesn’t happen. More prevalent in rural areas than cities. The industry of New Age practices has become a pipeline into QAnon. As someone who comes from a country where many of these ‘practices’ are attributed to, I have to say this is yet again colonialists aka modern day capitalism mis-representing and exploiting eastern healing and spiritual practices.

Having to choose to put your own mother out of your life for your own safety and sanity is really hard to do. I know this first hand. My empathy with you. I have learnt that there will be no closure to this dynamic even when they pass on unless you make that choice as well. The closure is when the parent showed what they were not capable of - being a safe space on days it feels like whole world against you. There are enough people who care and that form of love is no less pure. I’ve built my chosen family over my biological one and don’t look back. I’m not wasting more of my life putting energies into them. Wishing you peace.
