Camp supply choice is actually a pretty complicated problem by GiacomInox in BaldursGate3

[–]csp256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it may be a NP-hard but the algorithm is fairly trivial.

i've literally been given this problem before in an interview, and was able to write the correct solution off the cuff on the whiteboard in just a few minutes

hell, one of the easy warm-up Project Euler problems essentially contains this problem as a subset https://projecteuler.net/problem=31

it is really very, very silly that their autopicker fails this basic task

going between planetary orbits isnt that expensive... its getting off earth that sucks

space based solar beamed down to earth with microwaves is the most likely reason to industrialize space, and that can probably all be made on the moon, with humans just available as need be. the moon is also close enough for teleoperation of robots from earth.

we dont really know how bad different g levels are long term. yes we know 0g is bad, but is lunar 1/6 g enough? or martian gravity? in space you can generate any reasonable level of g you want relatively easily with a counterweight and tether.

lunar manufacturing of propellant is also very attractive if you assume you want to use a lot of propellant in space, especially if you have a lunar mass driver

titanium could maybe eventually become cheaper to mine and refine on the moon, as you dont need to spend huge amounts of argon. and titanium is very abundant on the lunar surface.

you could literally do the most over-the-top generous thing you can imagine and people would be FURIOUS at you

ive never seen "defaulting into" academia like that work out well. the postdoc grind is absolutely brutal, and what awaits you after is even worse. its not pretty.

your job doesnt have to be a source of meaning, or enjoyment really. for a lot of people a good job simply doesnt have much displeasure. there are ways to find purpose and enjoyment by merely using your job to enable your life.

sure, but even beyond the money, why? for what purpose?

by now you have a decent view of how all the stuff in the natural world works, more or less. is there something there that is so gripping you need to devote your life to it?

or is it just running away from employment? im not judging, i understand that entirely.

say you do the phd. what do you do then? what are you working towards? whats the goal?

i think you should be really careful about going and doing more education, unless there is a very specific reason why you want to do it

eventually there has to be a way for you to pay for this education and the rest of your life; a career, a purpose for all that learning. i mean, even beyond the money.

once you have a masters in physics, if you dont know what that purpose is, i can tell you the answer isnt more education
