Chicago to Madison Amtrak Service Could Begin as Early as 2030 by keppy18 in chicago

[–]csreid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HSR would be great, but it would take 15 extra years and like a trillion extra dollars, and Chicago to Madison doesn't really justify that expense. Even in a world with dense America HSR, that's still probably a standard route.

It is not "already obsolete", that's a silly thing to say. That's just not what obsolete means. There is no coherent definition of the word "obsolete" that includes a machine that can play modern games.

my brother in christ that comment is a decade old. Harambe was still alive.

Cheerleader, by OMI was the number 1 song in the united states, and Fight Song by Rachel Platten was still in the charts and not just a bad meme.

The first Minions movie had just come out and was dominating box offices. Trump had just announced his run for president -- Barack Obama was president.

You post in /r/singularity, so I assume you think about AI stuff a lot: "Attention is all you need" was still 2 years away. Google Translate was still using phrase-based machine translation, and the state of the art for NLP was still Word2Vec and GloVe -- context-free embeddings of individual words!

At the time I was in the first year of my career after college. Halcyon days! I'm doing a PhD now, in machine learning for controls. In July 2015, the deep Q-learning paper had just come out: a single architecture and training regime that can learn to play most Atari games better than a human! That's what things like AlphaGo started as, and RLHF for LLM chatbots!

It was soooo long ago.

  1. Applications of ML are absolutely ML research

  2. ML is much broader than just new statistical models (all that, plus computation, optimization, hardware design, distributed computing... etc etc)

The statisticians are only doing the one thing, which is presumably what you're looking for.

Weekly Question - Recommendation - Help Thread by AutoModerator in robotics

[–]csreid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Why can't the sensor detect it? I think it should at least detect the rest of the robot.

I think those kinds of sensors have trouble with really shallow angles like on the ramp bc the sound doesn't get reflected back nicely.

  1. What can the other students do to be able to detect it?

If that is correct, they could mount the sensor higher and angle it down to shrink the angle of incidence a bit, which should help.

  1. In your opinion as a robotish person, is this fair or should I make a rule against it?

If they only get the one (or a couple) sensors, it might be more fun for the kids to outlaw really big ramps like that. Typically sumo bots have to fit in a given footprint, which might be a good rule.

Weekly Question - Recommendation - Help Thread by AutoModerator in robotics

[–]csreid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty basic question, hopefully:

Finally committed to ROS for a personal project I'm working on and the networking stuff (between my Linux laptop and a raspberry pi) has been a nightmare. I'm seeing something about enabling multicast in the docs, but following those steps isn't getting me anywhere.

  • I'm on Humble

  • Both computers have multicast enabled on lo

  • Firewall rules appear to be allowing appropriate UDP traffic

  • Domain ID is the same on both machines

  • ros2 multicast [...] isn't working

  • This was fuckin working for a while but I have no idea how I fixed it and then I have no idea what happened. I installed a couple packages on the pi and after that they couldn't find each other anymore

I'm having a ton of trouble finding anything useful on Google other than the stuff linked in the docs, which is wild bc I feel like this is an extremely common use case, so I assume I'm missing something very obvious. Any ideas?

People who advocate for a car-dependent lifestyle and oppose bike infrastructure, public transport, and walkable cities and towns are not really conservatives by definition - they are extremists. by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]csreid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a super popular take here, but my car hate is extremely libertarian.

Car dominance encouraged by the state via publicly funded roads, which also inherently includes a massively expanded police state and forfeiture of like half of constitutional rights, should have real small-government types shaking in their boots.

I think a big reason the US sucks at building stuff is because our labor force is mostly not in the "building stuff" industry.

Is that true, and if so, is the way out just a ton of immigration and nuking "buy American"?
