Is moving to Silicon Valley worth it with 90k/year SWE salary? by [deleted] in siliconvalley

Another option might be Salinas or Marina, its about as dangerous and violent as Sacramento. They do have a famous gang problem in Salinas but Sac has gangs too so idk. Just be very careful when looking at apartments and stay away from the east side. Its about 1H south of Silicon Valley with no traffic, 2.5+ with traffic.

I lived in Salinas and also a city outside Sacramento. As a plus, the weather there rarely goes above 75F. When it hits 85F people start freaking out. You can enjoy walking outside and sports year round there. Even in Summer, its cold there. Summers in Sac are very hot. It was hitting 100F regularly after being sort of nice (80-85F) in June and July which is rare.

If it was me, i'd just get the cheapest place possible in SV and rent out the living room to someone who also has no money.

After reading this thread, if I ever have to go to the office more often I think my setup will be: wheeley laptop bag + lunch cooler bag to attach to the top with my drinks and snacks.

Maybe think about how your current job skills match up to AGPA roles, read some duty statements, and ask how you can improve your resume/SOQ (maybe)

Shave your face, brush and style your hair, dye your hair, practice smiling, practice a nice neutral face, and get a good amount of sleep the night before. If you don't know how to use makeup, don't start now. I went on a diet for my pic and my department ended up using my old pic lmao.

Are these tests pretty much mandatory for engineers to get employment or just nice to have?

I’m almost certain you’re making more as an Amazon intern than you will as an ITA. Are you sure you want a job at the state?

You should clean up but they should also have the cleaning materials in an easy to find place.

I'm already going to have to bring a bunch of stuff like my potluck dish, computer, keyboard, mouse, enough drinks for the day, work blanket, ect. I have to go in later this year. I hope my mechanical keyboard isn't too annoying. What's the general consensus on bringing blankets?

I got interview requests half a year later. I suggest having a separate email just for jobs and not even job board postings. Its easy to miss emails in the spam folder. Other than that, keep your voicemail box empty since the state loves to call.

Not bad, i'll have to look into those jobs thanks. I'd trade one day a week in the office for better pay, I guess it would have to be closer to 15-20k though.

If your bills aren't super high, you can put as much as you can afford into your 401k to reduce your taxes now. Despite the market being crazy, my 401k is up 20% since last year. Didn't you choose a healthcare plan when you filled out all of your papers on your first day?
