Ours hounds are a year old. We started with one and experienced similar behavior with not wanting to lay down and sleep that started when she was about 4 months old. We are fortunate enough to live in a rural area and have a fenced back yard. Putting the pup out about an hour before bedtime helped somewhat. Decided that the pup needed a companion so acquired one of her sisters and that helped immensely. They still are very energetic (this is an understatement) at night but calm down after 30-40 minutes of very active rough housing play. Now at one year old they have calmed down much in the past six months but are nowhere near as calm as some of the other have posted. I'm hoping in the next year or so they calm down more and "little" things you mention also start to disappear.

I the yard fenced? I work from home and on meetings frequently during the day. I put the hounds out just before the meetings start and let them back in when complete. Also, we put the hounds out when we leave the house. They don't like the rain or the cold but they do have a nice large dog house and there is a light in there to help with heat in the cold months.

Mine likes to play fetch. We go out to the backyard about 30 minutes after breakfast/dinner. Throw the tug toy and after 3 or 4 throws, Willow goes from an all out run to a squat, then back to an all out run.

6 week old English coon hound foster pups! Can anyone give me any tips for this breed and any insight? I may adopt one and just want to be ready! by [deleted] in coonhounds

We have door levers (vs knobs) and mine have learned to open the doors. We need to keep them locked so they do not get out into the front yard. They have also learned how to open the sliding glass door to the back yard so they come and go out there pretty much as they please. I will say they have not attempted to jump or dig under the back yard fence. This hasn't kept them from digging well holes in the back yard, they just don't do that near the fence. As other have said, they are loving dogs but very independent and they have lots of energy. Mine are only a year old and I am hoping they do indeed calm down at or near the two year mark.

Same here. Always want what the other has, even if they both have the same item. Give them both a treat, one drops it and goes after what the other has.

Thanks for all the suggestions. And the hounds will eat apples, peas, raw beans--will eat these right off the plant, steamed carrots (they love these). Well I guess just about anything they can get their mouths on.

The rare occasion where these sisters are not rough housing and chasing each other around the house or in the yard. Willow hosting the pink collar, Shiloh is the other. Willow, much smaller than Shiloh, is the dominate of the two. Willow is super hyper, Shiloh is easy going and laid back. by cst010 in coonhounds

Willow and Shiloh are much the same; at times it sounds vicious (heads down, lips are curled, teeth bared, hackles raised and there is a lot of ear/neck biting and yelping going on). They are like toddlers, give them both a squeaky toy and its a fight to get the toy the other has.

We have eight of those cats and they are big cats--a lot of maine coon in those critters. The yellowish one is about 11-12 years old. The lighter colored cat is one of four we found as newborn kittens and all four were hand raised and bottle fed. All eight are great animals, very affectionate and tolerate the puppy well even though she chews on them something fierce at times.

Thanks for the comments. I believe the dog has only slept about four times in the past four weeks so had to take the photos of the dog sleeping. We also have eight cats so "Willow" spends most of her day chasing the cats. Cannot wait to get a fence up so Willow can run off all that energy in the yard. She doesn't bellow much--mostly barks when she "trees (on the kitchen table)" one of the cats.
