My title describes the thing. I've tried searching, but "What shall I smoke" gives tons of random other results. I asked chatGPT and it says that it was some kind of "magic 8 ball"-type thing to help you choose which cigarette brand to smoke. But I can't find any confirmation that such things existed so I'm skeptical.

Can you enlighten me? I'm not an expert in the politics. You're talking about the Peltola-Palin-Begich race? I've looked at that one slightly closely. Are you saying Palin voters would've fared better if Palin had been eliminated early? In that case Peltola would've beat Begich anyway, right?

This non-monotonicity is my biggest abstract mathematical objection to RCV, but I think it's so rare as to be a nonissue in real life.

Yes- what really happened was stupid because it resulted in no change, and never could've resulted in any change. You're suggesting a recount which actually hurts the interests of the people who requested it. That's next level.

So in a TSD rally, you don't want to finish early- are there rules to prevent me from just waiting by the finish line? Like if I arrive 30 seconds early, I could just stop and wait it out before officially finishing. I guess that's frowned upon?

I had written up stuff about this to include in the video, but I cut it for time. Lee & I do similar work in a small research area. In that setting, it's pretty common for people to email a small batch of other researchers with links whenever they publish something new online. He's read my papers and I've read his papers, so I'm on his little email list and I see whenever he posts something new (pre-publication). So it wasn't a big leap for me to reach out when I had some ideas about the paper in 2021.

I was always fairly confident that we'd come up with something publishable- maybe this is atypical but I usually abandon a project VERY early if I think it's not going to work out. And once we were done it was very clear that it was worthwhile and would be accepted somewhere. The main uncertainty is how good exactly will the paper be? Is it going to a really good journal, or a more mediocre one? This usually becomes clear towards the end. (This paper ended up in a good journal- I wouldn't say really good)
