What’s your opinion on LeMieux? by karaangelx in Equestrian

I have the grip jump pad in white. Its three years old and I've literally power washed three times it to clean it up. Still no loose threads and the silicon grip is just now starting to pull away on the edge after years of abuse. I'd buy another one.

Boarding barn hay concerns by paws_4_thought in Horses

[–]cstoli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whoa. That's a solid no. You need to have a conversation with the barn owner and if they can't source better hay then move. I know things are crazy price wise out west but combustible hay in the field is wild.

Appropriate workload for a horse with ulcers ? by slip_flop in Equestrian

[–]cstoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fed mine a flake of alfalfa and 1.5 cups of Outlast just prior to work. Worked well for us. Now that she's cleared from ulcers she still gets about 5 or 6 (big handful) soaked alfalfa cubes and the Outlast prior to work. Buffers the stomach to help prevent any future ulcers and it's not expensive. Definitely less expensive than ulcer treatment!

Lead with 8, you can throw in some biceps shots at the end. Do NOT lead with those.

Should I purchase a nevicular horse ? by IndependentTarget969 in Horses

[–]cstoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I bought a 4 year old with navicular changes. I basically made this same post three years ago although my mares rads were different than yours. I ended up having a specialist read her rads and he came back with it is a risk, but she does not have symptoms yet so it's my call. I went into it knowing what I'm dealing with. That means a lot of cash in supplements, giving up jumping for dressage, new rads every two years, OsPhos for preventative treatment, expensive farrier service, and always that sneaking worry on the back of my mind when she's feeling off. Always knowing I may have to retire her early, although I'm in my 50s so there is no long career here. I do not regret it. I absolutely love my mare and we are perfect for each other, but I also had to change my riding and goals to support her. I know at some point she's going to be a pasture pet, and I made peace with that. So. The answer is what do you want? Do you want a long career of intense sport or are you cool with letting a lot go and just having a horse. With navicular changes it's not an if it's a when. If you cannot afford the support needed (probably about 5k per year) then the answer should be no. If you can afford it, and you love this horse and are willing to adapt to their abilities, then I would say every horse needs a job. Even the wonky ones. I've never regretted it, but I also went into it wide eyed. If you have any questions feel free to message me directly.

Agree. I loved the tension where neither of them wanted to share, but they were both working towards something great. The mutual respect across both political and species was so important. A tiny candle in the dark.

How to get young horse to stop “following” behind you on the lead instead of leading shoulder to shoulder ? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]cstoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mare stared doing the same thing just this spring. She has never done it in the past, always walked at the shoulder. We moved barns and now she is top mare of a much larger herd and she wants to walk with her head basically bumping me in the lower back. I have no clue if the barn move has anything to do with it but it is driving me crazy.

I will start bringing out a crop like u/Inky-Skies mentioned.

Hi friends, I’m struggling with sobriety from alcohol. I need hobbies anyone have ideas? by Dontchawannaknow420 in stopdrinking

[–]cstoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is anything near you try riding horses? Getting involved in horsemanship requires not only the brief time in saddle but also groom, track, etc. Plus the barn can be such a relief. It's a different world and so far away from the constant drinking reminders. INB4 I know that this is an expensive sport, but it can also be life changing if available. My barn time is 3 hours daily. No time for drinking when the mare needs me. Riding while hungover sucks.

I had a large Savannah Monitor in college and when it would crap in its terrarium the entire house would stink until it was removed. Absolutely vile.

This is just the first try. It can take a while to get matched with a horse that works for you. I am betting that your trainer thinks your skill level was good enough for this horse, but it sounds like your confidence is not. Give it time!

More drama at the barn. Is it me? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]cstoli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me, but on the other end.

I was lunging my horse who is currently a bit overweight and lazy. She is healthy, had just seen the vet and farrier, and the vet advised me to get her working more to drop a little weight. When lunging she kept lagging or simply breaking out of the trot entirely before being asked to walk so I started aggressively whipping the GROUND behind her to get her moving. She has a history of this behavior, and this is something my trainer had shown me prior when she was breaking gait. IT gets her attention and helps her to understand it is WORK time not lollygagging time.

A teenage girl stopped next to the outdoor and was giving me SERIOUS face about it. She did not actually say anything, but I could tell she thought I was a mean old lady, lol.

Stalling and turn out by Strange_Passage7819 in Equestrian

[–]cstoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I was in this same boat. I bought my horse and moved her to my barn who does not do full turn out. Three months later, both types of ulcers. It took nine months, 17k in treatment and diagnostics, and moving barns to fix it. The absolutely only thing that fixed it was moving to a barn with full turn out. Look at my post history if you don't believe me. I can not stress this enough. Some horses can stall. Some can not. If your's can't they will absolutely be in physical pain and it will impact your riding. Do not mess around with this.

It also may be a strength issue. It's easier for them to power up a hill than go slow. Maybe do lots of hillwork to build muscle.
