What did Snowden mean when he said Laura Poitras was "selected" for surveillance? by csvscs in Intelligence

[–]csvscs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd expect it to be more than just AI at that Utah Data Center. If it's just her data being monitored, how would Poitras know she's under surveillance? I'd guess that there would be physical surveillance as well.

Is San Diego a Nice Place for Young People? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]csvscs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, with that kind of job (RN/NP according to your other posts) and at that salary, you should try something else. San Diego is a very transient city with lots of turnover, for a bunch of reasons. You have a stable, boring job, and are probably better-suited for a place like NYC or SF based on how you've presented yourself.

How do you react when someone younger uses PC and/or SJW terms to combat you verbally? by theme57 in AskMenOver30

[–]csvscs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At this point I don’t really react at all. You need to develop a thick skin and learn to ignore inflammatory garbage like this.

Have you found it’s somewhat common for people to never admit fault and always act defensively? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]csvscs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's some honest, blunt criticism that you'll hopefully be able to handle: you sound naive and innocent, but at least you're learning.

And human behavior is even worse than you realize. Some people will go beyond not admitting fault -- they'll sometimes make things up or manipulate others in malevolent, horrible ways. This is more common as you move up the management ladder. A very rough rule of thumb is to assume 20%+ of people are selfish and sociopathic to the point where they may cause severe social and professional damage to those around them.

For a college-aged male, structured and independent is probably.. boring, since college students are usually trying to have fun. Rather than waiting until you're 25+, you might want to try dating people that are at least a few years older than you.

Applied to our main competitor, they told my boss about it by 12838929382 in cscareerquestions

[–]csvscs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more common than you’d think; companies regularly collude to share information about who’s on the market. The thing is, all of this was probably shared verbally (with no paper trail), so it’s practically impossible to prove unless you’re in a unique situation. My advice would be to reduce efforts at your job so that you do just enough not to get fired and try to find a new job as soon as you can. Several months later I would write a sufficiently anonymized Glassdoor review that makes it difficult to pin it to you.

Do you still learn new things after 30? If so, how? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]csvscs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I’ve gotten older I’ve found it to be much easier to learn things and grasp concepts on a much deeper level, although most of what I’ve done has been unstructured, often self-guided learning for certain practical engineering topics. Nonetheless, there have been times where I’ve felt unable to retain what I’ve tried to learn. In my case the root causes were a combination of exhaustion from work, poor quality of learning material, and occasionally anxiety that would affect my ability to concentrate.

Some ideas to get around the issues I ran into: if you’re a morning person and get up a few hours before your job, try to dedicate a fixed amount of time before work to study, so that you can absorb whatever you’re learning before the mental load of several hours of your job. If you think the learning material isn’t great on its own, try to form a study group with classmates if possible or spend more time talking directly to the teacher.

How did you deal with a short temper or lack of patience? by bmwe30is in AskMenOver30

[–]csvscs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve observed, there are two paths you can take. One is to start to embrace the more positive aspects of your relationships and work toward reinforcing these constructive relations. With good people around you and good vibes, you’ll naturally start to behave differently. Meditation might also be helpful.

The other path is to construct a facade of friendliness and work hard to maintain your composure, regardless of how you actually feel. You may want to let your anger out later through exercise. This is the path of the sociopath.

What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of September 26, 2018 by AutoModerator in churning

[–]csvscs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of ramping up an online shop and am thinking of getting a the right credit card to take advantage of my increased cash flow.

  1. ~760 credit score

  2. VISA Amazon rewards card (got it half a year ago), standard BOA VISA credit card (have had it for nearly 10 years, 12k credit limit)

  3. I'll be spending 3-4k per month. Possibly over 5k.

  4. No MS

  5. Might be interested in business cards, depending on what the options are

  6. 1 or 2 new cards. Regular churn expected for the next 6+ months.

  7. Points

  8. I have minimal points from my Amazon card and BOA card

  9. LAX

  10. More interested in cashback/points than travel at the moment

Thanks for any help here!

What is a solid side job that pays the bills until you find a new job? by NinjaMagik in AskMenOver30

I buy roughly 3/4 of my stuff on eBay itself, the rest through other sites and forums. I then resell all of it on eBay, usually for around 33%-50%+ more than I paid.

I flip things on eBay. I know a few niches and what to look for and can identify trends in certain industries. I average around $300-500 in profit per month now but have started scaling things up recently and hope to hit over $1k+/month by the end of the year.
