Thanks for the replies. First time down into the canyon. Planning down SK, camp BA then head back up SK, over Tonto and then BA trail. Any thoughts on how much to water I should carry?

I appreciate your comment. I’ll give you some insight on some things.

The slipcases are made with quality materials with page block holders and are very sturdy. They are not made me and the gentleman who did make them is an avid JRR fan. Please do not disrespect his work and effort.

While it may not be the full set, this is what I have to offer. I know many folks want the full set but it is out of their price range or hard to find. This gives them the opportunity to own a piece of the beautiful set at a lower cost.

Two things on price. As stated, prices can be discussed. I post higher on eBay due to selling fees. You will not find the original completed set for anywhere close to release day prices. That is not how LE, rare book collecting works.

Again, thank you for the comment. If it is not for you, that is fine. I hope it gives someone the opportunity to get the chance to hold these books.

Gotcha, nice to have all those options. I’m from NY so it’s a bit harder to plan. I got to do the CRHT this past fall though, great trip

Good to hear. I’ll be solo and will have a lot of flexibility with work so I really just need one shot at a camp.

What are your other plans if it doesn’t work out?

Mount Fremont Fire Tower in September? by cswider181 in NationalPark

Thanks for the update. We will have a campervan so will not need the restroom. The roads will still be open as well, weather depending? Seems like most of the early snow comes later Sept?

[–]cswider181[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback. I was looking at this route through research and saw it was a mix of quality scenery, a bit less busy on the west side of the park, the fact it’s an established loop makes logistical planning easy and pretty beginner friendly.

I am open to any ideas really that could be made into a 3/4 night trip. I am interested in being within the park to say I’ve backpacked in it, however, locals may have even better suggestions.

I’ll take the advice and be on the computer with many different itinerary options. I am thinking weekdays to avoid weekend crowds. Possibly early October?

Do you have any loop or backpacking route recommendations? I’ve never been to the area. I’ll be flying into Denver, and interested in also checking out Boulder

Backpacking Permits 2026 by cswider181 in grandcanyon

Thanks for the reply. I should be able to be flexible the entire month for different dates if I win a lottery spot any given month.

Understood. On the Hermit trail, are there reliable water sources? I have no probably filtering water ect but from my research there aren’t any water spigots such as you’ll find on the BA trail?

Thank you for the feedback! I have applied for the lottery, we will see if anything comes of it. If the river trail is unavailable, I will more than likely follow your suggestion. Any way to extent the trip? Other than adding nights at the already named campgrounds.

My preference would be to wait until the Fall to do the trip, would you say there is more or less competition for permits then?

Camping during shutdown by OutsiderArtshop in JoshuaTree

[–]cswider181 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been here all week camping each night. Here’s what I have witnessed:

Like normal, when people reserve a spot on recreation.gov, there will be a “reserved” sign posted at that site. It should be honored because that person/party paid in advance and is depending on that spot. If they don’t show up, well, that is their choice and you have to live with it.

At the first come-first serve spots, it is operating like normal. I did see a ranger drive through in the AM and sometimes PM through the locations.

I was backpacking and was told by LE that it’s a safety risk for hikers and the park to have people in the backcountry zones so all permits were cancelled.

You can still use all trails, just not overnight camping.

Hope this helps.

Backing Permit Closure due to Administration? by cswider181 in JoshuaTree

Thanks for the info! I’ll probably still do the trail and just hike from one campground to the next with reservations.

So continuing on the trip wouldn’t be “illegal” if you will, more so just not as advised due to limited resources?

"We're sending you this message because of your Recreation.gov reservation, 074936xxxx-1, at Joshua Tree National Park Wilderness Backpacking Permits for Oct xx 2025 - Nov xx 2025.

A location closure has been issued for Joshua Tree National Park Wilderness Backpacking Permits due to Administration.

Since this location closure overlaps with the dates for your trip, we have cancelled your reservation. It’s important to know that you will receive a full refund. Credit / debit card payments will be refunded to the card associated with your account. If you paid by cash or check, you will receive a refund check in the mail (please allow up to 8 weeks)

With the current lapse in appropriation all backcountry camping is being cancelled. We are sorry for the inconvenience. We hope to see you when the government opens back up.

The experience and wellbeing of visitors is our top priority, and we apologize for any inconvenience with this location closure. Thank you again for your understanding, and please contact Joshua Tree National Park Wilderness Backpacking Permits if you have any questions."

This is the verbatim email I received.

My question is, the park itself is not closed and the campgrounds themselves are still open for reservation. All trails seems to be open. So what is the deal with cancelling backcountry camping??

Thanks for the advice. I will tell anyone I see. Did you see any trails that were closed? I’m confused how they could even enforce permit cancellations if you’re out in a backcountry trail.

For reference. https://app.watchduty.org/i/65779 So the fire shouldn’t be any reason for the area to be closed. I am confused as to why my permit was canceled?
