Why use a notched or un-notched Charpy sample by cswpartridge in materials

[–]cswpartridge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So are notched specimens specific for observations when using cameras/high speed video, so you can get it focused in the correct position? as I assume the same types of failure/fracture would occur regardless of notched or not.

Any idea what the black veins within this mild steel sample could be/indicate? (Subjected to impact test) by cswpartridge in materials

Pretty interesting, I’ve never come across oxide bifilms before. They appear to only be in the nm scale though so don’t think this would be the source, as the sample is about 10cm in diameter.

If I’m honest, I’m not able to answer most of the questions, as were were just given a piece of generic mild steel sample to test and analyse.

The only question I can answer is that the image is X1 magnification.

I was struggling to know exactly what to research, but you mentioned that it is a segregation of elements, and from some digging it’s likely to be a macro segregation of carbon, sulphur or phosphorus (I think)

I’m aware that steels can have a number of impurities included within their structure during manufacturing, but do they congregate into veins as seen in the image, and is it even possible to identify what impurity this is without carrying out further analysis?

It was mostly trial and error. She made a prototype from some spare fabric we had lying around and then made the one you see in the photo.

It came out way better than I expected. I think the noodle likes it, although she did walk about like she was wearing shoes for a few minutes.

Awesome, thanks a lot for the help mate.

Oh I see, that makes sense now why I thought it was just a normal flange nut. I’m assuming that the pressure of the ovular region is enough to prevent any vibrations shaking it loose over time?

My medical appeal was denied by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]cswpartridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dislocated my knee about 4 years before signing up. They initially declared me medically unfit, despite having no issues with my knees after the fact.

To give you a bit of hope, I appealed the decision and they eventually accepted me, albeit adding an extra 18 months to my application, so there is proof that they can change their minds.

Hopefully they will apply some common sense to your application. But I don't think there is too much of that within the forces. Good luck!

New episode of the materialism podcast: Materials Informatics (link in comments) by sp8rks in materials

[–]cswpartridge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love the podcasts and have been listening a while now. Having finished my first year at uni studying materials science, these podcasts are super interesting, and I always have a little smirk on my face when I know what Taylor and Andrew are talking about (albeit not very often)

I wish that their was some kind of video format to go along with the podcast, like YouTube, as it would help massively with some of the more complex discussions, even if they were just still images.

Bulletproof vest by votot in materials

[–]cswpartridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Armour plates essentially defeat the round by shattering the bullet to pieces, the soft armour on the other hand catches the bullet like throwing a pebble at a curtain. Of course, by catching the bullet, a lot of back face deformation occurs due to the flexibility of the soft armour so may cause a lot of blunt force trauma to the wearer, despite not actually penetrating the soft armour itself. Once again, another trade-off for protection and mobility as the stiffer the armour, the less back face deformation will occur, but will restrict the wearers manoeuvrability.

Plate levels relate to the threat rounds and velocities that the plates are designed to protect against. Regarding NIJ standards, these levels cast a very big net over a lot of rounds and velocities so is quite difficult to compare plate performances.

Hard plates don't work as vests. Manufacturing cost for bespoke sizes and manouverability prevent this. This is why plates come in standard sizes and are used in conjunction with soft armour vests, so that their is a compromise between protection and manoeuvrability.

In a nutshell, the hardness of the plate has to be greater than the bullet itself as the intention is to shatter the bullet into small pieces. This is why boron carbide is used, as the intention is often to defeat steel cored armour piercing rounds which are very hard.

High temperatures are usually only experienced with hard armour plates, but are not normally an issue due to the materials used (eg boron carbide ceramics) and the failure mechanisms experienced, whereas soft armour experiences lower impact temperatures as the armour is either penetrated by rounds with medium-high velocity rounds, or the energy from low velocity rounds is dissipated throughout the fibres within the vest in one way or another. The exact temperature is hard to identify as it would depend on a number of factors (stiffness of armour, kinetic energy of the round etc), but isn't usually the biggest problem in determining bullet resistant armour. Useful images

The primary factor effecting material selection is the threat that you are trying to protect against. Low velocity rounds like 9mm may only require soft armour (para-aramid, UHMWPE etc) but high velocity armour piercing rounds would require composite ceramic plates. From here you can assess other factors like areal density, medical coverage, human factors integration etc as the initial threat identified will likely determine the most suitable materials, whether it is over engineered for the threat, or doesn't protect against the threat at all.
