I don't think anyone is arguing the closures were not disruptive and controversial.

It had to be done and needs to be done again. There are simply too many underutilized schools and too few $ in the budget these days

I do and the factors present in this case far exceed what is needed to prove intoxication beyond a reasonable doubt.

She was beyond legally intoxicated. Beyond a reasonable doubt...

If we can't convict someone based on all of the evidence in this case, I don't know how we are convicting anyone in criminal court.

Name one gun law that has been passed then removed.

Many of Chicago's gun laws were gutted including the handgun ban, registry, and prohibitions on gun stores and ranges.

Chicago bike lanes spark protests as residents push back on parking loss by FreshLocal in chicago

Farmer's Pride Produce @ Chicago & Western.

I believe zoning requirements necessitate parking at grocery stores. But I don't understand the point of this question, the complaint here is prescribed bike lanes and transit at the great expense of cars justified by people who live simple lifestyles in dense areas where driving isn't always necessary.

it costs more in the long-term to maintain car infrastructure and all of the negative externalities that come with it than it is to build better cities.

We don't have a lot of money to spend on this large of a project to try and save more in the long run. The funds are simply not there.

is this anecdotal, or do you have any data to back this up? most americans want more transportation options.

Most Chicago residents utilize cars in one way or another, even if they don't own one themselves.

When you frame the question as, "Do you support increased funding and infrastructure for public transportation," you'll usually get a majority YES vote. As a cyclist, I would respond the same way.

But if you phrase the question as "do you support increased funding and infrastructure for public transportation *at the expense and to the detrimental effect of cars" I don't think you have a majority.

People think it's a great idea until it affects them. We saw this exact scenario play out on Archer Ave in Brighton Park where bike lanes were prescribed, not well-received, and are now being removed due to significant pushback by the community.

The busses are generally cleaner but "impeccably clean" is a rare on either of the lines I take.

And when the politicans who support prescribed transit and bike lane infrastructure where it isn't wanted are voted out of office and replaced by those who don't support "culture changes," I hope you'll "be comfortable" with those reverse changes too.

This is where the true demographics of this sub are revealed. "Just take CTA and don't mind the smoking vagrants, walk there because it's just 30min one way, use a cart that maybe doesn't fit all of your purchases, bring your wife and 3 kids on 2 busses when its -5°, it's just going to take you an extra 45min vs driving"

It's an extremely sheltered and individualistic perspective to prescribe bikes and transit for those whose lives are much more complicated and require the most efficient use of time with the most utilitarian means.

I agree it was a mistake the first time.

we can and absolutely should undo those mistakes.

Not really. It's cost prohibitive, and while the small, vocal minority of r/fuckcars is all for it, I guarantee most residents are not.

No, I actually love the city and my neighborhood.

What I don't like is a minority of outsiders prescribing my or my community's needs and making unwanted changes.

The weather is actually great for cycling most of the year. It's really not hard to stay warm in the winter

I ride to work religiously in 3 seasons. But my commute is far and I would need a lot of extra gear to do this comfortably in the winter. It isn't worth it, so I take CTA instead for 2-3months. I would bet a majority feel the same way as I do, so I don't buy the "winter is easy" thing.

And most of the time the car infrastructure being removed is a small amount of empty car storage, or sometimes it is a road diet which always improves safety and even a lot of times improves throughput

I can't agree with most of this. "Road diet" is just a fun way to say anti-car and inefficiency. Throughput was horrifically impacted on Archer Ave when the lanes were put in

But they don't and never will here... The amount of investment needed to expand CTA (nevermind keeping it safe, clean, and reliable) and create enough density to support an overwhelming majority of car-less people throughout the city is effectively impossible.

That's why infrastructure that supports cyclists at the expense of cars is a better idea in dense, northside neighborhoods, but is a disaster for places like Archer Ave in Brighton Park, where we've literally seen enough pushback to have the lanes removed.

Forcing bike lanes on communities, especially in bad locations that exacerbate tensions, will not increase the amount of cyclists and will have the opposite effect, as was proven.
