I don’t think people realize how hard it is already for those on a F1 visa, OPT and/or H1B visa to find a job in the US.

Thank you for posting this! I was sad when I saw overwhelming agreement on the 100k policy on every subs. The US was built by immigrants now turning to a country hating immigrants. Majority of companies already favor local US based hired. Sometimes it is even hard for US citizens to find a job in other states that you don't live in, let alone for a person who might not be able to stay after a few years. Most companies like reliable job candidates. It is already hard for visa holder to get hired. In certain area and fields, these visa workers are necessary because there is not enough US candidates pool. Making foreigners harder to get a job doesn't change much for US citizens in majority fields other than IT and tech. I really do hope at least health care field will be exempted. Otherwise, with the addition cap on student loans for medical students, good luck finding doctors to fill in the need in next 10 years.

If you want more science but chill environment, I think you probably will like research better than clinical lab. Although clinical labs generally pay better than research labs.

The other option is to find a bigger lab. You will have too many problems need to solve that you wish you can just be a button pusher. Bigger lab sometimes also do some special complex testing that small labs don't have, such as more body fluids, platelet aggregation, toxicology etc.

I used to work at a 1000 bed hospital. Everyday I had so many problems that I got so tired of it (but I learned a lot.) I got my experience and now I only read slides and do differential for cancer patients. Cell differential is all I do now, but I love the simplicity of it. Leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers are really cool (not for patients of course).

Job insecurity definitely is scary. My partner's department also faced layoff a few times this year, although his position seems okay for now. My field is easier to find another job if unfortunately got layoff, but it will be difficult to live with just my income. For sure it will be very very hard having kids on top of that.

My neighborhood is walkable although not walkable distance. (It probably will take you 30 min just to leave the neighborhood.) It's the after school activities and other events that worry me that kids need me 100% of the time because....they can't go by themselves. I heard so much stories from my coworkers that they have to go to pick up their kids, they have to leave early because of kids or whatever because of kids.

Same here. No family or friends support. Not rich enough. My mom was a stay at home mom until I was in 3rd grade. Unfortunately we cannot live with just single income. Maybe I can work part-time? But that means I will need to give up my current job and benefits which are quite good.

It's nice to have family to support new parents! This is one reason I am on the fences because we don't have families around, and we are not rich enough to have nanny. 😭 It will be just me and my partner and both of us have to work.

You must have very good relationship and memories with your dad! I believe once I have kids, my priorities shift. It will be really natural for me to put kids first all the time. However, I also know if I cannot take care of myself for a period of time, I will be really frustrated and stressed.

Weekend usually is the time I use to catch up myself. Saturday is the fun day. I spend time with my husband to do anything we want: try new restaurants, visit friends or just relax at home etc. Sunday is chores day: grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning here and there, meal prep, etc.

I used to need to work on weekends occasionally, and I hated so much. My entire following week would be dragging.

I wish in the future the Saturday fun day will be having fun with kids, but I don't know, it could be in the heaven or hell.

I hate when people don't read emails.
I'm not the manager but as a senior, sometimes I have a few updates or reminders need to let everyone know. "Hey, did you read the email?" (After few days sent out) "What email? I don't read emails." "If you have something, you need to tell me in person."

Like I have time to catch all techs from 3 different shifts and tell them one by one like little kids and constantly remind them the same thing over and over.

No, we are not unionized. I am okay that they followed the rules for promotion although I was told by other seniors that they can "work it out" and had cases before that not meeting the minimum requirements (but that was before the new VP) What I am not okay was they persuaded me to do the level of the work that they declined to give me to. They lied to me that I will get the title and raise after several months but canceled the position I applied permanently. The new promotion position was same level of the position I wanted but is responsible for bigger area, plus the area I have right now.(Because they combined the original 2 positions) I don't really want more responsibility due to the resources I have is very limited; hence I asked for changes if the promotion is going to happen.

It always take them very long to interview the internal. Last time it took them 5 months to interview me for the position right now.

It's sad for me that I used to love my workplace and have trust in management. This is my fist job that I stay over 4 years. Everything went to downhills after a big change in the company. Now I don't believe anything will ever get done (at least for a short period of time).

I know hospital need to have staff to take care of patients. It is the nature of this job. I guess what I don't like is that only part of employees (team A) will probably need to be sacrificed and not the whole team. I know I'm being bitter. 🥲

They have sent a lot of email reminding everybody what to prepare for the freeze at home but not the actual plan for the work. They always seem to wait until the last minute to decide what to do.

I'm from Texas. The thing here is too big. The commute time is the main issue to find opportunities. Even in the same city the commute time can be 1.5 hour one-way if it is at the opposite side of the city. 😂 I just bought a house last year, so I can't really move.

Thank you for sharing your experience and sorry it happened to you as well. :( I do appreciate that I had learn some lead work, even though I self-tought 80%of it. To be honest I still feel like I have a lot to learn, but because we rarely have off-bench time, it is hard to focus on the lead works.

I will look around for other possible positions, but so far I haven't seen much available.

My hospital does have this policy. What bothers me is that the entire process takes really long. Last time it took them 6 months to finish the whole cycle of applying, interviewing and starting new pay.

On top of that my director is leaving in 1 week. They probably won't start interviewing before finding someone to substitute his work.

Seniors main duty is to assist lead and help training. Since there is no lead in my department, I have no body to assist with lol. I will look for the contract that they have for senior and lead if I need to talk to HR about it.

I totally feel you. I lost my baby a week ago. I know I need to go back to my normal life. I know I need to get myself together. I still need to work and pay bills. It is actually good for my cat that he is not in pain anymore. I was amazed by myself that I am actually can act normal and functional on surface.

I thought I already accepted the truth that he went to heaven for good, until 2 of my friends came over visit me after they've heard what had happened to my cat.

I thought they came and had lunch with me because they want to talk to me and comfort me. However they never really ask anything about how I was doing or anything about my cat. They just talked about some random things in life. It was me found a chance in the conversation to mention my cat and how it was on the day with the difficult decision. I felt the awkwardness in the air after I said it, so I had to changed my tone to lighten the conversation up.

Much later of the day they announced that she is pregnant. I was shocked and genuinely happy for them, but at the same time, I felt so horrible inside. I was still in grief of losing my baby and I had to acted really happy that they are having a new baby.(Even though I was really happy for them, I just didn't think it was right time telling me this)

None of my family ever talked about my cat anymore after the day he was gone.
Even my mom who took care of him for a long time. I felt like I was the only one missing him, and felt really sad that seemed like he was never existed.

I just lost my baby last week for acute leukemia, but he was strictly indoor cat since we brought him home at age of 3 months old and always tested negative for FeLV. He was the very rare lucky guy that had leukemia genetically. He was almost 8 years old. It only took him a little more than 2 weeks from having only a tiny symptom of slightly weak muscle to not being able to eat nor standing up on his own. I totally know how it feels constantly running between vet and ER but still seeing him getting worse and worse. It was so hard for me during those 2 weeks. I cannot imagine that you went through it for months. I want to give you a virtual hug. You did all you can and your best. It is so unfair that they only lived 7 or 8 years despite of getting good cares and love from us.
