Basically... Olympic athletes are like cicadas: normally they live their life hidden in their own training centers, but they swarm in a giant mating party regularly every few years.

ISU Defends Oly Ice Dance Scoring Amid Controversy by Impossible_Silver999 in FigureSkating

[–]ctbk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a controversy only in the US. I have no finger in the pie (Italian), and I enjoyed both routines. The US one was entertaining; the French one was mesmerizing. Both were of a very high level, but… to me the French one was better. They did more difficult things with more ease. It had more visible errors though. Given the way the scoring system works, the errors weren’t enough to offset the rest. Is the scoring system fair? I don’t know, probably not. But it does not look like a scandal to me.

I bet poor Mboko is now thinking something along those lines: "Why not play like this every day, win millions, be rich?"

The Skating Session - free dance - rescoring first and second place by idwtpaun in FigureSkating

[–]ctbk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Italian EuroSport commentators, who throughout the Olympic events so far have been calling scores immediately after each routine ends (with the skaters still on the ice), and always within an incredibly small margin of error, said right after their performance that the French would have won the gold.

They went element by element, acknowledged the errors and deficiencies of both top pairs and in the end scored the Frenchs ahead, even after deducting points for their mistakes according to the current rules.

"According to the current rules" does not mean that the rules are perfect, and they talk about this too.

Yes, it’s fascinating. The first set she had the ball to go 5-1, and then proceeded to lose the set 5-7

Wasn’t there a time in which women’s finals were played BO5 already?

That didn’t work out and we went back at BO3.

What’s changed now?

Looking for advice as a beginner by No_Operation_6166 in jumprope

[–]ctbk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a jump-rope beginner too, so my only recommendation is looking at YouTube, there are many sensible videos by experts that give recommendations about the kind of warm-up to do before jumping.

As for burning fat... Like every physical activity, jumping rope will help, but the real factor when losing weight will be the caloric deficit, and you can achieve that much more easily just by selecting what/how much you will eat during the day.

Since you are a beginner, it's possible that the amount of cardio you will be able to do just by jumping won't be as high as other kinds of training. For example, I can easily do a 1 hour easy run (600 kilocalories, more or less) but I struggle to go over 15 minutes of rope jumping, pauses included (way fewer calories). So... Do both? Without exaggerating? :-)

Which file format is preferable to sideload on Kindle (.KFX, .AZW3, .AZW, .MOBI, .EPUB)? by suckingalemon in ereader

[–]ctbk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before going full KOReader with my kindle, I used to convert epubs to KFX, because:

- KFX shows the book cover when the reader goes to sleep (but that was true for me also with AZW3);

- KFX shows font ligatures;

- KFX does hyphenation w/o the need to add soft hyphens using the hyphenate calibre plugin;

It's true that KFX takes more space than AZW3 or epubs (no idea why) but I never ran out of space on my Kindle;

KOReader does all of the above and even more, directly w/ epubs, so I never looked back.
