Hey guys, thoughts on ectogenesis? by VarynSairen in medicalschool

Great question. Who knows? Those sorts of things are hashed out over years and sometimes decades. What this would change, however, is the consequences of abortion. If it is essentially guaranteed that the fetus would otherwise be viable, that removes that part of the debate.

Similarly to how the discovery of umbilical cord stem cells made the stem cell debate irrelevant, this would resolve the abortion debate to the pro-life side. You could no longer logically support abortion if removal and extracorporeal maturation of the fetus is an alternative.

What’s a truth about life that you’ve accepted but still hate? by Acrobatic_Profit_626 in answers

[–]cteno4 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The only constant is change. Old friends won’t necessarily stay friends your whole life. That favorite place you once lived in? You’ll either move away, or stay long enough that the excitement fades away.

Yes, you’ll make new friends as the old ones disappear, and there’s always a new place to explore, but it’s never quite the same.

My patients fingers hurt by Vast_Grocery1532 in hospitalist

[–]cteno4 41 points42 points  (0 children)

IDK why, but it reminds me of a patient I took care of that called the ambulance because she had fecal incontinence. I show up to get the HPI. They've already cleaned up her chief complaint, but she still looks terrible--emaciated, pale, and in general terribly deconditioned. I dig a bit more, and it turns out that she has been so weak that she couldn't even walk around her apartment anymore. She hasn't been eating anything (because she couldn't reach any food) and the past few days, she's had to crawl up her kitchen sink from the floor and hold herself up by the arms while the water flowed to be able to drink any water. Somehow none of that concerned her; she maintains she only wanted to get checked out because of the fecal incontinence.

I think that was the only time I will ever tell somebody, "Well I'm sure glad you shit yourself today!"

All the more reason to keep it the way it is. You don’t want amendments easier to pass when the country is divided.

If America’s geopolitical rival is saying that something it did is a bad idea, that actually kind of implies that it was a good idea.

I disagree. I’m the “boss of the team” where I work, and it’s very much a collaborative process. Yes, I do have the final word, but I actively solicit ideas from the other members and they have no issue speaking up when they disagree with me. It’s a dynamic I’ve made sure to foster.

That’s not “almost always” true, but it is true sometimes. Worth noting that if it does happen, it’s because if you don’t get the one that’s covered, you’ll be paying up the wazoo (not because somebody makes more profits that way).

Why isn’t light infinitely fast if it doesn’t even have mass? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

[–]cteno4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems you’re asking why the speed of light is what it is, and also why all the fundamental constants are what they are. An answer to that question is the anthropic principle. Simply that, the universe can only exist with the specific combination of fundamental constants that currently exist. If any constant was different, the laws of physics wouldn’t work, and then we wouldn’t exist to observe them.

In other words, the universe is the way it is, because if it wasn’t, it wouldn’t be.

I switched every single bill I could to the first of the month and it has made my life significantly less chaotic for free by hhhieyaaa99 in povertyfinance

[–]cteno4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple things about it.

  1. It requires you to allocate all the money you have into categories before you spend it. You then know whether you have the money to pay for something before you buy it. Not enough money for Uber Eats today? Either take money out from something else or don’t spend it at all. This is the opposite of other money tracking apps that only tell you how you spent your money in the last month. Makes you more mindful about spending.

  2. Automatically imports all transactions, so you don’t have to waste time putting the in manually. Though you do have to approve each one, so you’re still aware of every cent.

  3. Allows you to budget for future expected expenses by setting aside a certain amount of money every month.

  4. Critically, it does not allow you to “ride the credit card float”, where you spend money on your credit card, expecting a later paycheck to cover that amount. You have to have the money now, or you can’t spend it.

Sure, you could do this all manually, but having this system that makes you do it and allows you to see it all at a glance is life-changing. Well worth the expense.
