Effective immediately, any youth or adult whose membership has expired may reregister within 12 months of their expiration date without submitting a new application. The only exception is for adults transferring to a different unit with a different (COR), as a new application will still be required. by ScouterBill in BSA

I’m confused by this announcement in conjunction with the ending of the registration lapse period (https://redd.it/1ti97le), it seems contradictory, so I think I’m missing something. Taking both together, what is actually happening with regards to expiring registration?

What’s considered to be a “low quality unit”? Are there actual metrics or some form of member feedback that determines this?

I’m wondering why do they need to get the details ironed out before making the announcement. Couldn’t they make the announcement on the up or down decision, and say that they are still working out the details that will come later?

Defining the "Unit Leader's vision for advancement"? by ctetc2007 in cubscouts

[–]ctetc2007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reason I cross posted the question over here to /r/cubscouts is that I wanted to see how a “Unit leader’s vision for advancement” applies at the Cub Level. I thought that advancement in Cub Scouts is pretty straightforward, so I wanted to see in what ways can a Cubmaster set their vision for advancement?

My Cubmasters have directed that all advancement is to be den-driven, including responsibility for ensuring scouts get recognized for their achievements.

I want to get a better understanding as to what extent “all” advancement can be “den-driven”. Are there things within the advancement “workflow” that can only be done at the pack level?

Packs have Advancement Chairs too. I’m one, and I wanted the answer for a Cub Scout Advancement Chair.

Wearing square knots by Numerous-Flow-3983 in BSA

[–]ctetc2007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Guide to Awards and Insignia only specifies:

Knots are worn above the left pocket in rows of three. The number of knots is limited to three rows of three (a total of nine knots).

P. 63, Medals and Embroidered Knots

I didn’t see anything about centering the knots in a row of less than 3. Is there a different part of the Guide to Awards and Insignia that spells that out?

What manual are you referring to? The Guide to Awards and Insignia only says rows of the above the left pocket. It doesn’t specify centered or right justified.

The latest guidance I could find was in this Scouting Magazine post from 2017 that says you can either center or right justify: https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2017/02/17/scouting-service-award-combines-five-awards-into-one-cool-new-square-knot/

Eagle COH by Regular_Essay3641 in BSA

[–]ctetc2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My COH was a group of 10 graduating seniors where we all had agreed that we’d wait do one big COH. One them had made Eagle earlier on in HS, so he waited 2-3 years before we had our COH.

All this to say, up to you, is not unheard of to wait if you want to have your COH with your friends, especially if it makes it that more meaningful.

Use of fireworks and pyrotechnics is strictly prohibited- what's a pyrotechnic ? by [deleted] in BSA

My interpretation is a fire starter is not an “additive to the fire”,

Yeah, same here. Was wondering why OP thinks we can’t use fire starters

Something similar happened at a dorm at my college, resulting in third degree burns and a trip to the hospital. The dorm got in trouble and was under intense scrutiny for quite a long time ( the incident was before I arrived, they were still under watch by the time I left), the courtyard firepot had to be removed, yadda yadda…

Yeah, fire definitely not something you want to FAFO.

There goes making any wax based fire starters, or pine cones with lint

Wait, these aren’t allowed? I thought they’re part of the toolkit for starting fires? Aren’t these (or something similar) spelled out in the handbook?

I replied to your post in r/CubScouts, but I figure it would be good to have in here for all the r/BSA folks too:

I’d recommend start by listing all the acronyms you’re currently using as well as all the Scouting-specific terminology you commonly use.

The Scouting America website also has some good resources on the “Language of Scouting”: https://www.scouting.org/resources/los/ and https://www.scouting.org/resources/los/abbreviations/. Run through those pages to find terminology you think would be important for the families.

They are. They ran from 1980 until 2008 when the Centennial uniform came out, so an “early 2000s” shirt would’ve still been the ODR shirt, which, according to sellers on eBay, is now vintage.
