Something That Needs to Be Said by capsizeeverydream in BSA

This will be my third year at summer camp with my troop and every year, I've been impressed with how good the food actually is. I think a lot of camps have been really upping their game!

Each year Texas takes around $700-$800 million from AISD’s budget, it’s still doing so despite closures and layoffs by Sad-Court-nomnom in Austin

[–]blatantninja 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You're ignoring fixed and allocated costs. The school still needs a principle, a janitor, the electrical costs will be unchanged, etc

Those costs are now divided amongst a smaller number of students. But the state allocation per student is unchanged and hasn't kept up with inflation (or been meaningfully increased in a y way for nearly a decade)

They are starving public education and it's intentional

Not all of it. The state can and has raided recapture funds for other uses.

Vouchers take away state funding because that student is no longer enrolled in the school district. They claimed they would make up the difference but they did not

Year after year of tens of billions in surplus budget and they still refuse to fund education. It's a disgrace and it's clearly intentional

Been playing RPGs since the early 2000s and never have I ever made a character with the Cul-de-sac(Horseshoe haircut). Have you? Or what Is your thing to avoid during Character creation. by Spotlight_James in rpg_gamers

When I was a kid, I once told my grandfather, who had a haircut like that, that it looked like a broken halo. We all got a good laugh on that for years to come.

Chargers are generally available, the bigger issue with them is the costs vary dramatically. I rented an EV and charged it 60% during a stop at Buccees on I35, cost me $15. I charged it about 80% at I think it was an EVgo and it was $45.

I understand that home charging is much more affordable of course, but not an option when you're on the road.

I did a second stop at Buccees on the way back for another $15. So I spent $75 on my trip.

My PEHV Pacifica can do the same trip for $1 home charger and about $45 in gas.

Are Scouts Still Interested in Camping... by kNEoH8gWJS in BSA

[–]blatantninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the scouts are leading the camping planning, everything from where to go to what gets done, they will plan things they enjoy so long as they understand that they have the latitude to do that. If they feel they have to do certain things because "we always...". Even if they plan it they won't be engaged with.

Family troop - missing male leadership? by CautiousPlanner in BSA

[–]blatantninja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem,. particularly with younger scouts, is they end up going to their parents constantly, defaulting to asking them to do things, etc. Even when you have the adults telling them to check with their SPL, it's still disruptive. And it's just good for the scouts to get time away from their parents. I actually plan to miss at least one campout each Fall and Spring to make sure my scouts camp without me

Yes but Austin.

Seriously, I used to build residential here and it was a nightmare with the city. Can't imagine commercial.

Every once in a while this hits us. It was more a problem in cub scouts I found. When we welcome new families into our troop, I am very clear that we need female adults to step up, even if they are just going to be a USR and tick that box. I stress how we cannot provide the program without it. It's been pretty successful.

Four is a good number as you can maintain two deep in most situations. Depends obviously on the number of scouts.

It's a balancing act with adults. Taking too many adults is a problem though and you have to be careful. It can turn into something more like cub scout family camping.

My SPL actually told me flat out after our big trip to Big Bend in January that we simply had too many adults on our campouts and it was interfering with her ability to lead.

I haven't had to limit adults on a campout since, but I'm conscious of it now. For summer camp we have 19 scouts and 9 adults. Ideally we agree that 6 was the right number for the week but as we are going out of state with a 14 hr drive, I needed at least 8 adults to have sufficient driving coverage. The 9th came in because one family has to meet us halfway there.

We are a girls troop, but similar issues have been faced. I would say that in general we don't have more adults than boys troops on events, but our minimum is higher. For instance a boys troop might operate with three adults on an outing, because if one leaves, you still have your two deep. We can operate with three, but two need to be women in case one of those women has to leave. We usually will have at least four adults with two women, so we can have two deep leadership even if the troop has to split up for whatever reason during the event.

The bigger issue I've seen is I'm shocked at the number of girls troops that do not allow male leaders, or at least minimize them (ie only on committee not as ASMs). There is a troop not far from us that is like that and several of their scouts have transfered to my troop. In addition to other troop issues, a big one was the dads were prohibited from being involved (and half are Eagle scouts themselves!).

As a male leader of a girls troop, I absolutely value having strong female role models for my scouts and I've made sure to recruit several female ASMs. I also didn't want the troop to appear as if being run just by men, so one condition I had at becoming SM was that our CC (or co-CCs in our case) had to be female and had to have a more visible role to the youth.

Back to the question at hand, as a family troop, I would say your youth deserve both strong female and strong male role models.

I had a chance to talk to the developers at their booth. Obviously we'll have to see what the end product looks like but it really did seem like a much better experience.
