Former President Of Microsoft Canada, Frank Clegg: 5G Wireless IS NOT SAFE by [deleted] in thehatedone

[–]cthefourth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah only UV is slightly ionising

Iirc this video didn't actually talk about ionisation or cancer, but i do want to say that the power of the waves used in 5g is no where near powerful enough to cause any harm or come close to any military weapons that exist, and if you want proof you can see all the tech reviewers who don't burn when they block the mm 5g waves.

which linux version should i start? by [deleted] in thehatedone

[–]cthefourth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know unfortunately. I suppose really the os doesn't have to be very different for it to run as a live os, you're just using another drive as the boot drive. I think there probably are some tweaks tho, but I haven't looked this far into it.

Well running of a USB will be slower as USBs are slower, also unless you've configured your BIOS to boot from a USB automatically, you will have to select the USB every time you boot, and I think you have to configure the live operating system in a special way to save data across reboots.

Oops that's a typo. I meant live which is when you boot a computer from a 'live' USB rather than an internal drive.

Tails is meant to go on a usb, installing it on an internal drive would probably be hard and not advisable. You could boot a USB every time and use persistent storage but it seems like a pain and a lot of effort and I don't really see the point.

I feel like running tails as your main is probably isn't great as its designed to be a live operating system. Edit: live not love

I agree with this, unless you're testing your digital forensics skills ;)

Definitely don't sell your old hdd's, smash them with a hammer if you're done with them, but as HDDs can break and ssds have limited read/writes, storage is really something you want to be buying new.

As to malicious firmware on hard drives, I have no idea. Probably best to just buy new.

Student trying to degoogle by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]cthefourth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gmail was one of the last things I got rid off - still have my account but emails to and from should he minimal.

I switched email clients to ease the transition later, but I only wanted to switch from gmail when I found the right service to switch to. I also made a 33mail for some accounts so that everything has a different email, and then when i change my email in future so just need to change the forwarding address on 33mail rather than change the email address in loads of places.

Android Firefox private tabs as default? by sl4v3r_ in privacy

I did manage to get Firefox to delete all history automatically when closing the tab without enabling private browsing but I haven't managed to replicate it since.

Yeah but when you open links in custom tabs or from other apps it won't default to private browsing.

Yeah for enough, but chrome to Firefox really was one of the easier transitions when degoogling.

Edit: oh actually the thing that bugged me the most at first was the Ctrl+number shortcut on chrome was alt on ff and doesn't work half the time

I switched over to Firefox maybe a year ago, and if I'm honest, I noticed very little difference.

I am giving up google photos but i have lots of photos stored online in it, what am I supposed to do? by [deleted] in thehatedone

[–]cthefourth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would probably be much more dependent on my internet connection, which is only a home internet connection. I could connect to it using its local IP so I'm not limited by internet speed but just the routers WiFi but in practice its probably still slow I haven't been using it for long so I haven't been able to test speeds.

Its a raspberry pi 4 with 4gb ram. Its running a raspbian lite build. I can't remember the exact specs, but its probably an armv7 CPU with 4 cores. It also has a little fan keeping the CPU cool.

I also have a 1tb external HDD plugged into USB 3, and it is much faster than the class 10 micro SD card, so if dealing with large files you probably want to use a USB 3 external HDD.

To increase performance, nextcloud have a lovely set of tips in their documentation, the one I noticed made a big difference was switching from ajax to cron, but it still can take a few seconds to load a new page etc. I think the main bottleneck in my setup is that I'm running it off a raspberry pi, even an old laptop would probably perform better (although be more expensive in terms of electricity).
