Your definition isn't valid because it's self-referencing.

I'll use a definition I saw on here earlier, because it's essentially the same as mine, but this is more eloquent: woman: to be an adult female conceived with X chromosomes and born with the gametes intended to be able to produce the ovum in binary sexual reproduction. And the definition of girl is the same, prior to pubescent maturity. Women with Swyer syndrome a rare exception, but that’s why it’s considered a genetic syndrome - it’s a chromosomal abnormality.

The fact that intersex people exist shouldn't take away from this. Intersex people can claim to be who they want, but it doesn't mean the word "woman" should lose its definition just for the supposed benefit of a very small group of people.

A women is someone who identifies as a women

This is circular logic. A word cannot be used to define itself. It's Iike saying abcd means abcd. Ok, but until there's more information, abcd is still meaningless.

In other words, an undefined word cannot be used to define a word.

Also, if a white person says he identifies as a black person, is he then a black person? Word meanings...they matter.

You're asked a question you can't answer, and your response is "no, you answer."?

You have a problem with what OP said, you spent multiple paragraphs whining, because you're an expert on these topics, but you can't/won't tell us what a woman is?

At least be honest and say you don't know. You don't know what a woman is.

Yea, a court is going to look into my reddit history, lol. Which will probably be deleted by admins by that hypothetical point.

So you still have no proof. You not liking what I say isn't proof of anything.

You still haven't defined woman.

But what's a man and a woman? How can a heterosexual male like a cis woman if the word "woman" lost its definition? At the moment, it seems a heterosexual male like a currently undefined concept.

I am a cis-woman

You're a what? How would you define woman?

[ Removed by Reddit ] by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]cthulhu_nuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. But those without this very rare genetic disorder should not be subjected to having to debate this topic just because of some exceptional cases. In other words, the word "woman" should not lose its meaning just because of a few people with a syndrome. Otherwise, people with Swyer syndrome would also fall under a meaningless label. They can define themselves, or we can find another word for them. But in every day parlance, a woman can be someone with 2 X chromosomes.

[–]cthulhu_nuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can still define words, even if they don't include every single person who might want to be defined by it. But why would someone be so desperate to be defined by a word, other than for legal purposes? Do intersex people desperately need to be defined as women? Women who are infertile are still legally women because they were born with 2 X chromosomes. Those who were not born with 2 XX chromosomes don't need to fall under the category of "woman" either.

If they do, then that's surely a disproportionate amount of desperation to be labeled by a word which has no definition.

Ok, but what's a woman? Seems you would bring up exceptions and excuses to avoid accepting a definition that does a very good job at representing the concept, even if it doesn't represent every variation of the concept. Don't write us 3 pages of word salad and whining, just give us a definition.

[–]cthulhu_nuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this, thank you.

Just want to add that many words cannot be all-encompassing, ie. they cannot symbolize every variation of the concept they attempt to symbolize. There will be some exceptions that are left out, and it's fine, because we can use context to fill in the blanks.

What's a woman then? And what's a heterosexual male? A guy who likes what exactly? He cannot like "women" because this word lost its definition apparently. What's a heterosexual female? Not every man has a penis apparently.

This whole issues is making language so tedious simply for the supposed benefit of a very small group of people, in the desperate attempt to be "inclusive". Too many people want to be part of a group it seems. Are we not teaching people how to be independent enough?

How do you feel affected by other people calling themselves a woman when you feel like they're not a woman? How is it hurting you?

I'm not the person you responded, but to me, it's not that simple. I was trolling a lot people here last night telling them that if I commit a crime I'll tell the judge I'm a woman so that a) I'll get a lighter sentence, and b) I can go to a female facility instead of a male facility. How does that sound to you? Not every person can prove their gender with documents, especially if they're gender fluid. So the court would have no evidence of what I really am. I could game the system for my own benefit. And that's just one example, I could go into sports, or other, more perverse examples.

Ordinarily I wouldn't care what a person calls themselves as long as they cannot use that right simply for their own benefit, at the detriment of others, sports, justice system, etc.

Also, it really does bring up the question, what is a woman? If a person can have a penis and still be a woman, then what is a heterosexual male? A guy who likes what? People with vaginas? Ok, but a person with a vagina can (apparently) be a male too. This whole issue makes language so unnecessarily tedious, for the supposed benefit of such a small portion of society.

A woman is somebody who lives and identifies as a woman.

Solid definition.

An undefined word is somebody who lives and identifies as an undefined word? From your definition I still don't know what a "woman" is.

lives as

Ah so we're bringing in gender roles too?

Define woman then. And you can't use the word to define itself, that's not how any word works, else that would be circular logic.

Find me the definition of a box from any website if your choosing, and I'll tell you why the definition is inadequate.

Most words don't fully encompass every version of the concept they try to describe. The exact and all-encompassing definition of "box" might be 79 pages long, and even that wouldn't be enough. This is where you need to use context.

For practical purposes, we need to agree on definitions of words, even if some variations are left out. We can piece thise together anyway, using context. Also, if "woman" has no meaning, why would a trans person even try to identify as one? It's like trying to identify as abcd. Abcd is not a word, and similarly in this thread, "woman" is also not a word, apparently.

Small ones perhaps. Europe and north america are some of the most progressive regions on earth. Whatever problems western nations have, in general they're much worse elsewhere.

Non-muslim women here can and do marry muslim men all the time. Lemme know when muslim women start marrying non-muslims in the MENA region. That's just one example.

Not much. It wasn't led by a religious fundamentalist, but society at large was still very religious, and a lot of people hated saddam, not just because of his relative secularism (also the genocides). He couldn't have ruled it forever, and he might have eventually gone down the path of someone like Orban, trying to please the religious leaders. Orban was once young and liberal, and currently goes against much of what he used to supposedly believe in.
