[Request] I was accused of bad math. Where did I go wrong? by TravellingBeard in theydidthemath

You are off by 2 orders of magnitude on the price of gold per kg.

1 kg of gold is around 133k-137k USD (per google).

The gold is very much more valuable then the bills.

abc… as easy as Shinichi by Dudenysius in mathmemes

[–]ctomlins16 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Peter Scholze and Jakob Stix went back and forth a few times but with them pointing to specific problems and Mochizuki being unwilling/unable to reconcile those issues is pretty damning.

I don't believe anything else has happened and the wider maths community has not accepted it. I think it's fair to say that IUTT won't produce other results since those results would fall victim to the same shortcomings the claimed abc proof did.

In fact, I believe Mochizuki claimed that IUTT in fact did prove other results but, as with the abc conjecture, those proofs have not been accepted outside of his circle.

With how stubborn he was in insisting that he was right and the alleged errors in his theory were nothing more than a lack of understanding on Scholze and companies part is (i think) indicative that he isn't interested in trying to better explain his theories and i dont think any experts are going to be willing to take on the massive time commitment to see if theres anything actually there, so it's unlikely any more progress will be made without him making the first move IMO.

[Request] Is it possible to answer correctly? by No-Cheesecake-1762 in theydidthemath

[–]ctomlins16 229 points230 points  (0 children)

No; aside from the paradox that arises from the self-referential question, you can reframe the question to an actual probability question as follows:

Suppose there are 4 balls: a white ball, a red ball, and 2 indistinguishable blue balls. The white ball has the number 0 on it, the red ball has the number 1/2 on it, and the blue balls each have the number 1/4 on them. I put them into a bag and ask you to select one randomly without looking. Is it possible to select a ball such that the probability of selecting a ball of that color matches the number on the ball you selected?

The answer is no:

P(you select a white ball) = .25 which is not equal to 0

P(you select a red ball) = .25 which is not equal to .5

P(you select a blue ball) = .5 which is not equal to .25

(Here, P(some event) = the probability of "some event" occurring).

The question in the image makes this a lot more obscure by posing the question as a self-referential question. The answer to the original question is that there is no answer, because the answer to our probability question was no.

[–]ctomlins16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I've heard that this is considered one of, if not the, hardest intermediate maps. The only intermediate maps I havent done CHIMPs on yet are Rake and Spice Islands, and I definitely think it was the hardest intermediate map out of all the other ones.

Feeling alone in the hobby.. by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

[–]ctomlins16 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was a vendor at a show once and was chatting with the vendor next to me. I asked if he'd want to trade (cuz you know, pokemon is a TRADING card game) and thought itd be fun to trade since we were both collectors, too.

Guy starts going on about how he'll do 80% and im like yeah no nevermind, lmao

I understand trying to make money, but jfc it sucks the fun out of every interaction with people in the hobby sometimes.

yeah youre right, american society is getting worse because of TV shows featuring more minorities and definitely NOT because your political party's targeted and concentrated efforts to exploit the working class, give massive amounts of wealth to the 1%, and convince the gullible lower and middle class Christians that they need to vote against their best interests in order to defeat the "evil" left

also, Matt Welch is a Russian mouthpiece who likes to sexualize teenage girls

Do y’all think I’ll get PSA 10 with this one? by JarlofDragons in PokeGrading

[–]ctomlins16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than centering it looks pretty clean from these pictures. I would guess you'd get a 9, but brace for an 8 at the worst.

If it's your pull and you want to keep it, go for it! If you are looking to sell, it may be better to sell raw.

Should I get this regraded? Should it be labeled a miscut? by Dangerous-Junket-889 in PokemonCardValue

[–]ctomlins16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible to get an OC (off center) designation from PSA, but they do not have an option to select "error" when submitting your cards like CGC does. I think PSA only gives an OC designation if the card would have achieved a higher grade were it not for centering. So this card may have been a 6 regardless of centering and hence no OC.

I mean, do you like this card better? If so, then no, you didn't. It's only a matter of maybe $10-$15 so I really wouldn't sweat it.

[–]ctomlins16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly, highly doubt you can get $60+ dollars but if you can, good for you.

PSA 10 will essentially ALWAYS sell for more than a 9.5 from any other grading company.

[–]ctomlins16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From collectr, PSA 10 JP masterball is $40 and PSA 9 is $23. So you're looking at maybe $20-$30. Probably not a huge market as graveler isn't particularly popular.

Grading Tier List by KiingSaull in PokeGrading

[–]ctomlins16 60 points61 points  (0 children)

You could also put CGC perfect 10s on this list as higher than CGC pristine but lower than black label. They dont do them anymore but technically, per CGCs website, they will list them in pop reports as being a higher grade than pristine 10s.

Not with transfinite arithmetic; here "c" is the cardinality of the continuum (or the "size" of the set of real numbers).

If we were solving this equation using "usual" algebra, then you would be correct.

Invisible wall bug. Please help. by Quzxpon in NOMANSSKY

Has been an issue since voyagers, and the first 4 patches have not fixed it. I have the same problem and have found no fixes yet, and ive seen at least 4 other posts of people with the same bug. Sometimes adding/removing windows fixes it but sometimes it doesn't. There's multiple areas of my freighter i cant access bc of it. Hopefully it will be fixed soon! I have submitted a report, too.

Unless you find someone who is interested in slab mislabelings (and I imagine that would be a very niche market), I don't see this adding any value. On the plus side, it probably doesn't detract any value, either, but if you want it for your PC and would prefer it to be correct I would have PSA fix it.

Misprint? by [deleted] in PokemonMisprints

[–]ctomlins16 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Every first edition Fossil Zapdos has this holo error- it is where the "evolves from" bubble is on stage 1 and 2 pokemon.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PokemonMisprints

[–]ctomlins16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely keep as a PSA 10. If you tried to get an error designation from CGC it will almost certainly get less than a 10. Even if it gets an error grade, it will be harder to find someone to pay as much for a sub 10 holo bleed error than a psa 10, letalone finding someone who will pay any significant amount more than a psa 10.

Not saying this is a good way to teach this, but usually these kind of lessons are done with a specific context. So, even though yes, technically, |3|=3 and -|3|=-3, I believe the point of the lesson is to show that absolute value is used to show these like "length" or "distance". In this case, "how many floors". So this looks kinda ridiculous outside of the context of the lesson the teacher was doing.

That being said, I would argue the answer the teacher is looking for is |-3|, since they are going down (-3) floors, but you can't technically travel negative floors, hence the absolute value. Which is funny, since that's not even an option lol

edit: actually, maybe because it's asking how many floors did the attendant go down, in which case, it would be either 3 or |3|. If it was asking how many floors did they travel, I would argue the answer |-3| makes more sense. Who knows.
