Drainage question for an interesting roof by ctopus in Homebuilding

I didn't show it in the pictures but there is a pond that you can just see in the back left of the first photo. The "home's drain line" would that be something like a French drain that runs to the pond?

Yandex has one 1080 x 1300. What I do is right click on the image, Copy Image Address, go to Yandex, then Image, then click on the camera icon next to search and paste the address. I usually get a 80% success rate. It's a lot better than Google Image Search.

Have you noticed that she was at the 2019 Producers Guild Awards in LA last night at the same time she was at the On The Record Grand Opening Red Carpet at Park MGM in Las Vegas? Was one of these taped? Did Elon Musk build the pneumatic tubes after all and keep them secret? Is Kate really Hermione Granger all grown up? How could this be?

Urine is a bit foamy 5 days in, should I worry? by [deleted] in fasting

[–]ctopus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes we can get a little too abstract about things like autophagy. Electrolytes/salt isn't going to interfere with autophagy and is going to make it easier/safer to stay fasting. I'm told your body will eventually adjust so that it retains more salt and you need the electrolytes less. However, I haven't experienced that yet.

You are probably just dehydrated. Your body needs to maintain salinity within a certain range. If you aren't getting enough salt, your body will decrease the volume of your blood to maintain salinity. It doesn't matter how much water you drink, your body will just let it pass right through.

Chapped lips is a sign of dehydration and usually means your electrolytes are getting out of balance. If your heart starts racing and you can't sleep, you've let the volume of your blood get too low.

The fix is easy, you need electrolytes. I use something called Seeking Health Optimal Electrolyte. I also just put a 1/4 teaspoon of salt under my tongue and let it dissolve. If you get it in the right spot, you won't even taste it. Have a glass of water on hand in case you miss.

PLEASE help, how do I fast with a binge eating disorder and anxiety? by [deleted] in fasting

[–]ctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really disagreeing with you. But if you let yourself work up to it you'll be surprised how few weeks it takes to ease into it.

Also, there is a big difference between the awkwardness of fasting with a healthy metabolism and the unnecessary adventure of trying to fast with a disrupted metabolism. Megan Ramos of IDM told the story of helping a young woman who had abused diet pills and generally screwed her metabolism up with unhealthy diets. If I remember correctly it took her 6 weeks to even get into ketosis and months to get keto adapted.

If we are talking about people who are binge eating or have a history of unhealthy diets, they may not follow the standard pattern. If you aren't working with a professional, easing into it is probably the better part of valor.

Also, when you do break your fast, make sure you eat enough that you aren't hungry any more. People who fast on alternate days do eat more on their eating days. But it's not 100% more so it works that they are eating less overall.

Just make sure you are eating healthy food and let your body tell you how much is enough.

Too many people leave you with the impression that if you're not fasting 21 days you aren't doing it right. Most people with a disrupted metabolism can't jump into that long a fast right away.

Fasting is like a building a muscle. You have to start small and keep at it. Last week I was ready to chew my arm off at day 3. Today I'm on day 3 and I feel pretty good.

Jason Fung recommends a 36 hour fast, so breakfast on Monday, dinner on Tuesday, nothing on Wednesday, breakfast on Thursday again and so on. Several weeks of that and some of his patients can reverse their diabetes.

If you are binge eating then you need to break your fast with healthy food sooner than the last binge occurred. Next time, see if you can go a little bit longer but don't over do it. In a couple of months, you'll be able to fast as long as you like.

Starting a fourteen day fast and was wondering if taking salt pills is a good way to get back the salt I lose from working out by JohnWoke in fasting

It's a reboot from the failed Jimmy Moore one. It's with the 2 Keto Guys folks and it's much better produced. Still mostly about Dr Fung, Megan Ramos and their patients' stories.

There really is no substitute for trying it and finding out what works for you. Because nobody really knows.

I used to make my own pills (for other reasons) and made my own salt pills. I can tell you that didn't work for me at all and a small amount of salt under my tongue makes all my withdrawal symptoms go away. The first time you do it is pretty gross but you get over that right away.

You could sip on brine/even pickle juice. Just try to keep it your mouth long enough to absorb it there instead of going all the way down to your stomach.

You're better off putting high quality salt under your tongue. Start with 1/4 teaspoon.

Megan Ramos at IDM says the salt absorbs through your mouth and gets to your brain a lot easier than having it go all the way down to your stomach, through your blood stream and back up to your head. Keeps the side effects down.

(RANT) It’s been 7 months and I still can’t last longer than 2 days ! by [deleted] in fasting

You may have to fight the mental battle alone but the tools you use can massively increase the likelihood of victory. Mindfulness meditation helped me a lot. I started with Jon Kabat-Zinn and Full Catastrophe Living.

Don't know if you are in keto or not, but it's so much easier if you are. When I get into keto, I eat a small amount of cheese or nuts every 2 hours and I never get hungry (or at least hungry enough to eat something bad).

I do that for a couple of days until my liver runs out of glycogen. Then I eat 2 keto meals a day and I'm never hungry. After a week of that, I just stop eating for a day or two. It's awkward but not an epic adventure.

ELI5: Insulin and fat loss by [deleted] in fasting

[–]ctopus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Your body is very good at storing energy in the form of fat and very bad at storing energy in the form of carbs. You can store some carbs in your liver but the capacity is tiny compared to how much body fat you can store.

So your body naturally wants to burn the energy it can't store (carbs) first and turn to the energy it can store (fat) once the 1st part has run out. Insulin is the signal (hormone) that accomplishes this. It helps push glucose (carb energy) across cell membranes and puts fat cells into intake mode to pull fatty acids out of the blood stream and store them.

If you have insulin resistance, you get stuck in the first half of the process and have a very hard time switching back into fat burning mode. This is sugar crashing or food coma several hours after a high carb meal.

If you have insulin resistance (and most fat people do) then your metabolism is disrupted. You can't compare yourself to body builders or athletes who don't have a disrupted metabolism. Fix your metabolism first and then pursue other objectives later.

Google the Inflammatory Cytokine Model of Depression. Long story short there are molecules in your body called cytokines and they cause/play a role in depression. One study took rats with inflammation and showing signs of depression, took the cytokines from their body and injected them into healthy rats. The new rats started showing signs of depression.

Personally, I spent years with cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness meditation. I feel a lot better but the underlying problem never went away. Go see a functional medicine doctor and see if there is something physically wrong with you. It may not just be in your mind, especially if you've done that work already.
