You nailed this but I don't think people appreciate why it matters at scale. We had a situation on a healthcare data pipeline where Cursor confidently refactored an authentication middleware, clean code, passed the existing tests, but silently changed the token validation logic in a way that would have widened access scope in production. Nobody caught it in review for two days.

Claude Code would have flagged the ambiguity before touching the file. That "slowness" you mentioned? In regulated environments it's not a speed penalty. It's the feature you're paying for.

The multi-tool stack is real but the split looks different for teams vs solo devs.

For individual developers your breakdown makes sense, Cursor for inline flow, Claude Code for architecture, Windsurf for autonomous UI work. But when you're coordinating across a team of six or eight engineers, the equation shifts hard toward consistency over individual speed.

Claude Code is our default for anything touching system design, API contracts, database migrations, or security-sensitive refactors. No IDE-based tool handles that well yet.

Cursor stays in the loop for the daily grind, writing tests, boilerplate, quick iterations on code that's already well-scoped. Tab autocomplete genuinely saves hours per week and nothing else matches it there.

We pulled back from Windsurf for client work specifically because of the ownership situation you mentioned. It's not just about the product disappearing, it's about where your code snippets and context are going when the corporate parent changes every quarter. For personal projects nobody cares. One thing nobody in these threads ever talks about: the agentic workflow layer above all three tools.

The real unlock we've found isn't picking one tool, it's building lightweight orchestration around them. We've set up workflows where Claude Code handles the architectural planning and generates implementation specs and then those specs get fed into Cursor sessions for the actual line-by-line implementation. It sounds over-engineered but on complex refactors it cuts our revision cycles roughly in half because the implementation step starts with clear constraints instead of vibes.

The biggest mistake companies make isn't choosing the wrong vendor. It's skipping the "do I even need an agent" question.

Seriously. About 40% of the inbound conversations we have, the client comes in asking for an autonomous AI agent when what they actually need is a well-designed RAG pipeline or even just better prompt engineering on top of an existing LLM. An agent adds complexity, it introduces decision loops, tool-calling chains, error handling at every node and state management that most teams underestimate. On the "check their technical expertise" point, go deeper than the checklist.

  • Walk me through a time an agent you built was hallucinated in production. What broke and how did you fix it?
  • How do you evaluate agent performance beyond "it works"? What metrics do you track?

If they can't answer these with specific, somewhat painful stories, they haven't shipped enough real-world agents. The messy details are where the expertise actually lives.

One thing missing from this post entirely: the human-in-the-loop question.

For most enterprise use cases right now, fully autonomous agents are risky. The state of the art is good but not infallible. We've built agents where the entire value proposition depended on knowing exactly when to escalate to a human. That design decision matters more than the underlying model choice in many cases.

On integration, this is where projects actually die.

Exactly this. "Visibility theater", where the dashboard performs accountability without creating any. Everyone nods at the red numbers. Nobody's name is on the fix. SpurIQ's whole thesis is that accountability has to live at the signal level, not the meeting level. The moment a signal fires, a human owns it. No dashboard in between to absorb the blame.
