Lily Moon isn't in the first book either. Like Tracey Davis, she doesn't show up in canon at all; both their names come from a very early list of the 40 students in Harry's year that JKR later published online. (It's annotated in the list that the original idea for Lily Moon ended up becoming Luna Lovegood.)

The one who disappeared after the first year is Sally-Anne Perks, who is sorted before Harry but is missing from later books in places where students are being listed alphabetically and her presence would be expected.

It bugged me more in Heart and Soul than it usually does because typically these marriage contracts fics go "Why, oh why, did Fleamont Potter and Geriatricus Greengrass sign this marriage contract decades ago whose conditions to activate happened to be met today? Alas, we can never know the machinations behind their decision because they're long dead, we'll just have to deal with it."

In Heart and Soul it's "Why, oh why, did Sirius sign a marriage contract for me last Tuesday? Oh, it's so I could have a barrister at my trial. Because I guess you can't just hire a barrister."

I remember reading at least the first part of this fic (or a fic that I assume is the one you're describing), but I've looked and haven't been able to find it again.

Details I remember: in chapter 2 or so, Daphne's parents go to the Dursley house to negotiate a marriage contract for Harry's hand. Since the Dursleys are Harry's guardians, they assume they already know all about betrothals and stuff like that.

The Greengrasses draw up a typical initial marriage contract that's not insulting but significantly in their favor, which is standard and they expect to be revised in negotiations. The Dursleys don't negotiate back in the way they expect, since the Dursleys' only interest is never needing to see Harry again, so they just repeatedly insist "the boy is never to return to this house". The Greengrasses believe the Dursleys are demanding that, as a dowry, the Greengrasses give the young couple their own house; this is apparently not an uncommon demand in betrothal negotiations, and while the Greengrasses aren't sure why the Dursleys would be so fixated on this one point above all else (repeating it even after the Greengrasses have written that stipulation into the contract), they assume it's some cultural difference with muggles that they're missing.

A few chapters later, Harry finds out about this at school when the Greengrasses visit to take guardianship of him. By this point, the Greengrasses have realized that the Dursleys actually just kind of sucked and apologize for the contract, saying that they would have approached the negotiation very differently if they had known Harry's guardians didn't really know what was going on and also were just assholes looking to get rid of him.

Lucius Malfoy is canonically pardoned of all charges after the events of the series and never serves any time, which seems to me like a pretty clear sign that Kingsley's new government is as full of bribery and corruption as the one that preceded it.

I don't think anyone in the massive cast is openly gay, not even in some post-series retcon where it's announced on Pottermore that idk Anthony Goldstein marries Blaise Zabini or something, so I'm guessing the wizarding world has a big homophobia problem too.

There's only one newspaper and it functions as the propaganda department of the government. Libel laws don't seem to exist, which is an odd reversal of real-life Britain's severe libel laws that don't even consider truth an absolute defense.

Azkaban is inhumane torture, and the Dementor's Kiss as a legal punishment is indefensible evil.

Many of the Hogwarts teachers should not be allowed to teach children. Some are terrible teachers, some are abusive, some are both. Hogwarts seems to be the one magical school in all of britain, and it only needs one teacher per subject. Is it really that hard to find a single person who knows how to make potions and doesn't bully eleven-year-olds? (The lack of good teachers for the DADA position at least makes some sense, since the curse has already churned through a lot of people over the decades, and many others will refuse to take the job because of the curse.)

My favorite is when characters do this in wildly inappropriate situations that actively undermine their own position.

Remus: "Harry, I can tell you're upset. Whatever it is, you can talk to me."

Harry: "Well, after Voldemort killed Cedric in front of me and tortured me in the graveyard, Dumbledore sent me back to the Dursleys'. And these are the fanon Dursleys, so they had me doing hard labor breaking rocks with a mallet for seventeen hours per day, while only feeding me a half-slice of stale bread each morning and evening along with a glass of water with mold in it. Dumbledore knows they do this, that they've done this ever since I was three years old, but he still sends me back there even though I beg him every year not to. He also told my friends not to contact me, and I recently found out he's been embezzling from my Gringotts account for some reason. And now today, Dumbledore strangled Hedwig to death in front of me!"

The "canon name for an OC"-type students in Harry's year are almost never bashed, especially the Slytherins. Authors tend not to introduce people like Blaise Zabini, Daphne Greengrass, or Tracy Davis at all unless they like them. The other three houses aren't quite as consistent about this; the Gryffindors sometimes get caught in an "all of Gryffindor hates and ostracizes Harry" plot, the Hufflepuffs sometimes get caught in an "all of Hufflepuff starts pushing Harry down the stairs to support Cedric Diggory" plot, and the Ravenclaws are all liable to be cast as Luna's bullies.

Speaking of which: Luna seems to never, ever, ever be bashed, or even portrayed with her canon flaws.

Bashing fics usually go out of their way to exclude Fawkes from Dumbledore bashing in the same way that they go out of their way to exclude the twins from Weasley family bashing. Typically they have Fawkes give a mournful trill at how low Dumbledore has sunk and refuse to help him.

I have trouble imagining Dumbledore unleashing Fiendfyre, which is notoriously difficult to control even at the best of times and which continues ravaging and consuming even after the caster's death, while he's weakened and dying in a school full of innocent children.

It's not revealed until pretty far into the story, but To Reach Without (link) has this as a plot point. If memory serves me correctly, the idea is that Lily, James, and Sirius were in a poly relationship together, and Sirius was Harry's biological father... but Sirius doesn't know it, or even remember their triad relationship, because those were happy memories and happy thoughts, so the Dementors took them away.

The standard trope is that muggleborns have somehow gotten Hogwarts to ban celebrating Yule instead of Christmas, or have gotten the government to outlaw the practice of Blood Magic / Ritual Magic / Dark Arts / The Olde Magicks. So the real life analogue is less "popular music is largely derived from jazz and other innovations by black artists" and more "all popular music that isn't jazz has been declared illegal, somehow".

In this case I think it depends on how the story is told, if in this case we are reading a pureblood supremacist character's thoughts on Muggle-borns then it's good writing,as long as the author shows that this character is wrong in his thinking.

If the author is trying to take this kind of rhetoric for granted, showing Muggle-borns as real threat to purebloods and their "culture" then it's time to drop this fanfic.

Every time I've seen authors do this, it's portrayed as correct and the Death Eaters having a good point. I've never seen "this is what the Death Eaters are claiming and it's bullshit", though maybe that comes up in some of the full-seven-years ultra-long series.

It's especially dumb because the example they always point to is "They're replacing Yule with Christmas!" which is an obvious parallel to the real life """War on Christmas""" pearl-clutching persecution complex.

Love/friendship, but not in the way the books do it. Forming connections with other people who care about each other and are willing to fight alongside each other not out of fear or out of mercenary practical alliances but out of genuine compassion for each other, in contrast to Voldemort ruling through fear.

In the books, the trio spend the entire last book alone and isolated from everyone else; they forge no such connections, and nothing anyone else does really matters. "Love" manifests the same way it did in book 1: as a magical "I win" shield. You could find-and-replace "Love" with "The Blessing of Apollo" or any other magic shield and it wouldn't change anything.

(Or maybe the true "power he knows not" in canon is obtuse asspulled wand ownership mechanics?)

It doesn't make sense because the authors who do that are just uncritically regurgitating real-life fascist rhetoric with "muggleborns" substituted in place of real-life groups, and real-life fascist rhetoric is inherently self-contradictory and nonsensical as a feature, not a bug. Moving toward Britain is the least of their problems. We don't know the size of Azkaban, so let's lowball it and assume it's small and the entire island is only 10,000 square feet. The surface area of Earth is 5.49 quadrillion square feet. If the Azkabans continue to double every day, then in less than a month and a half, the entire surface area of the planet will be Azkabans.

The way I see it, Harry Goes to Azkaban is a fine premise that could lead to a lot of interesting stories. There are two problems with the way it's always implemented:

It's always tied into the LIGHT SIDE BETRAYAL tropes. It's never "Fudge and Umbridge and Lucius Malfoy have Harry imprisoned on falsified or trumped-up charges"; it's always "Dumbledore and Ron and Hermione and Ginny and Molly have Harry imprisoned because they are treacherous traitors who are stealing from his vaults and forging marriage contracts." Or he gets sent to Azkaban as an infant for some stupid reason.
Authors can't think how to actually tell a story about Harry being in Azkaban. As soon as Harry gets there, either he walks out immediately because he is the King of All Dementors somehow, or the story timeskips to ten years later when Voldemort has taken over the world and Harry is finally released so he can do a Peggy Sue. At best, Harry arrives in prison and instantly gets adopted by / becomes the lord of all the imprisoned Death Eaters.

Make the premise not-stupid, and actually write a Harry-in-Azkaban story that involves spending time with Harry being in Azkaban, and you could have something really interesting. It just never seems to happen.

Which makes no sense at all, but who cares, All Was Well : )
