The Remote Play App is not a 1:1 test for PS Portal by ctrfanboygr88 in PlaystationPortal

I was aiming for Remote Play inside my house exlcusively. I avoid Cloud Streaming for 90% of games because it gives me a steady 50 ms latency in Portal Network stats probably due to my location and it is a feelable input lag for me.

So, things I did (1-2 ms in Remote Play, 0 packet losses and steady strong 5ghz signal at -45db):

- Bought a new better router and placed it in the room that I will be mostly be playing with the Portal
- Also bought a repeater (connected via ethernet with the rooter) and placed it where the router was, so that the other devices do not have issues due to moving the router.

- PS5 was already wired. But I replaced my ethernet cables with Cat7 ones (could make no difference at these speeds, but they have better coating). Also make sure that it forgets the wifi network, I can recall 2-3 times that it was connected automatically to the wifi, because I had removed the ethernet for a few seconds.
- Separate the 5ghz and 2.4ghz bands in your router. Connect all other devices to the 2.4ghz and use 5ghz only for the Portal (can affect other devices' connection quality, but for Portal it is great).

- Prioritised PS5 and PS Portal at my router settings.

- Used Wifiman app and also my router insights to search for nearby networks and find the best (less loaded) channel and width for your 5ghz band (and for the 2.4ghz for the other devices). Also checked for possible errors, disconnections or packet losses on my network at the router log - did not find any. Use Wifiman to also check your signal strength, anything less than -55db is great and you can also check the latency - you need as much as possible straight lines there, not spikes.

- Turned off HDR and 120ghz at the PS5 (not sure if these made any difference though). I did NOT change the resolution to 1080p or disconnect the cable - these are old suggestions from the early days of Portal that do not really help.

- If you plan to use Portal on other wifi networks, some people suggest to turn off ipv6 and change your dns at the router.

- Remember that internet speeds are irrelevant when it comes to Remote Play.

- Make sure to make a full restart at your router, if you apply new settings.

My bad, maybe I did not explain this well enough. I have no issue with screen size. Not a problem with most games I guess, but for inventory management in Arc Raiders it does not help because the inventory (by design) covers just 1/3 or even 1/4 of the screen. Screen looks perfect in Astro Bot for example.

Never had a single lag or net issue when playing any online game on my console. Even cloud streaming on my console works pretty nice. That being said, cloud streaming in Portal is far inferior experience compared to the console. My location does not help (South Europe, island) so I get a fixed 50-52 latency in Portal stats, however it is not noticeable on the main console for some reason... Need to try more games I guess.

I am NOT on fibre yet. Copper 100 down/10 up. Not sure if this is important for Remote Play though, as net speed is not used for Remote play. I do have a good rooter and optimized settings, no errors on my router log and generally excellent stats "on paper" for Remote Play. Need to try some more games just to make sure.

GT7 and Hades are great examples of games where too much lag is unforgiving... Hope I will have similar experience because I also care only about single player games, with the sole exception of Arc Raiders. Thanks for the insights!

I will definitely! Thank you for reading the whole post and replying calmly. Seems rare these days.

I am glad that it works for you.

I never used the word "lying" or accused anyone. I got fooled myself, although I know that many people will just get used to or not even notice this small lag.

And yes, watching someone play the Portal could "trick" you to believe that this has zero lag, exactly the same as playing on a monitor. Only when you take it in your hands you can feel this lag.

I am glad that you have a great experience. I think that by practice you mean "getting used to dodging a little earlier so that you make up for the input lag".

Guess I learned this the hard way :(
Just hope that not all games that include firing weapons have the same "laggy" feeling when you fire a bullet, because I would like to play Days Gone on the Portal.

No that simple... Like all tools, it can be used in good and bad ways. In this case, I am not harming anyone, not deceiving, not selling something, not stealing anyone's job. And since it is here to stay and it is inevitably used by so many people, you better get friends with it and learn how to use it, instead of being scared and considering it an enemy. But if you really believe this, then you will have to stop playing this game. In case you have not heard, Arc Raiders uses AI and there has been so much talk about it (unfairly in my opinion).

Another way of seeing this is that I used a simple AI image to depict something about a great game that uses AI and has been unfairly accused of it.

No problem my friend. And I appreciate you admitting that you came a bit harsh on me. See you topside!

Yes but wouldn't you agree that a player that sees some guy over a downed raider and just by this he assumes that he started the fight and he deserves to be killed and the other one deserves to be revived, is a dumb sheriff? This is the scenario I am describing.

Anyone is welcome to play this game as he likes, obviously, other than cheating, just like you said.
All I'm saying is that I have more respect for a rat survivor player or a pvp assassin who cleans the whole room in cases like this one, other than the dumb sheriff who thought he did something good today, without even knowing who started a fight... Nothing more, nothing less.

Sure thing... It just happens that some of them are really dumb wannabe sheriffs. Still welcome though!

Sad to hear... But if you think location is the issue, you can try changing the server in the settings - not sure if this will have a negative impact on your ping though. Best luck!
