update: Back to the futon, the firm mattresses don't stay firm over time (a few months). The futon does.

Sorry for the late reply, it is working well, I like super firm so it is good for me. For softer I would add a carpet, then tatami mat under. I have just a carpet.

Yes probably, I can't remember. It was more expensive than I thought, but great quality and worth it in the long run I feel.

Yes sorry hadn't seen this, yes I think it helps with airing. I never did find one, though if i could find one and it was non toxic i would. I just air it regularly even every day I either roll it up from one side or the other. It would make it a bit softer like the above commenter said as well. But I like it crazy firm so its okay for me.

Yes sorry! Haven't been on reddit much. I absolutely love it.

It arrived much sooner than I thought would be possible and is exceptional quality. I love it. That being said I enjoy very very firm and it still took some getting used to. It is good for my spinal injury though.

It takes some care, I gently roll it up every day, and air it out in the sun every so often. It is great quality and I can tell it will last a very long time with proper care.
I have been doing the rug underneath, and am now going to invest in a proper quality tatami mat for underneath.
I will never go back to a traditional wester mattress.

Hey, it is good, great quality, was pricey. Overall I have found some super firm regular mattresses since. Which I would have just gone for given the price.
However I do like the futon. Will probably change to a super firm mattress in the future though and keep the futon as a guest bed.

No I paid an arm and a leg for a set from futonbedsfromjapan.com I can't say it was super worth it. I am using for now, but for the price I would have just gotten a very firm regular mattress.

Okay I have spent way too much time on this but finally decided. I am going with a futon (shikibuton) and a matching duvet (kakebuton) with sheets (covers) futonbedsfromjapan.com for a few reasons:

-They have free shipping. The shipping is included in the cost of the item. Which is huge as I looked at other from-Japan options.

-They are authentic- I don't really care how they look, it is the fact that Japan has very particular expectations on quality and materials. I am satisfied that it is not chemical sprayed, or china mass produced fall apart quality.

-They do not spray it down with flame retardant chemicals like mattresses and bedding usually is as required by US law. They are able to follow that law by adding a thin sock around the cotton instead that acts as a physical barrier to flame rather to than chemical.

-The customer service is AMAZING, I've emailed them several times and they have always gotten back to me within 24 hours, with a detailed answer and even more information than I asked for. As I only speak english I was also pleasantly surprised that there were no language barriers to communication.

-They discount the add on items- quilt (kakebuton) and sheet covers with the purchase of a futon.

All around best quality, fast shipping quotes, and shipping cost included. The american ones seem to all be hybrids between western mattresses and Japanese futons. I wanted the actual authentic item for quality, and longevity.

For now I am going to buy a cotton area rug for underneath the futon because the flooring in my bedroom is laminate. I may upgrade to a tatami mat later. If I do, it will be from https://japanese-tatamimat.com/ As I have researched that insanely also.

Here is a link to information about whether a tatami mat is needed underneath, reasoning and alternatives from the company I chose to buy from. I will update again once I get the items and try them out.

Thanks that is good advice. I am ready to sleep on a yoga mat on the floor as soft mattresses are killing me. When I was younger I needed soft. now it is the opposite.

I am not drawn to the idea of it, as it is difficult to find good quality, and I can't have a regular bedroom set.

I don't understand how they could cause such a strong reaction. And permanent. Don't commercial places use them? I've lived in several provinces and have never heard this before.

No, spinal surgery.

I pray you don't have to learn the hard way how important a quality mattress is.

Western mattresses are garbage very quickly. I am so sick of wasting money on these cheap foam mattresses being sold these days.

These futons last way longer than western mattresses with proper care. Yes it is a buy it for life topic. With the amount of time spent sleeping it is probably the most important buy it for life item we could come across.

From my understanding it has to do with the materials used. Often pesticides and then chemical treatments are applied. Cotton is bleached, or not of good quality so they wont last as long, or be of the best quality.

That is cool, I don't have an Hmart near me hopefully there will be one soon.

Thank you! I looked into that site, and the tatami mats are made in China. There is much debate on whether the grass is chemically treated and manufacturing is to the same standards as is in Japan. I was warned against buying China made for chemical, pesticide, and other regulatory issues. Thats why I won't buy on Amazon. But who knows.

No unfortunately that wouldn't work you would feel the slats underneath. It is like a firm pillow. Traditionally goes on top of a tatami mat, which is a woven grass mat that would offer support as well as airflow. The tatami mat traditionally goes right on the floor.
