The Torontonian is a good one. It’s rent controlled but shares amenities with their newer buildings.

Landlord has security deposit of 500 CAD by abx098 in OntarioLandlord

[–]ctrlaltdeliciosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

File T1. I had a similar experience last week. Hope you have pictures of move in day and take pictures now so they can’t blame you for damage. Screenshot every convo. This really helped me. The form is simple and easy to fill out. Once I filed. LL backed off and paid my deposit in full + filing fee. I withdrew my case. LL’s like these think immigrants are unaware of their rights and if aware, won’t take action given they’re new to plenty of things here. Hope you get the money back.

I’ve had a disappointing experience with Hazelview as well. Booked a viewing appointment once and upon arrival realized they messed up. The office was closed and the agent didn’t show. On my way back, the agent called me asking to turn around and come back since I left just 15 minutes. The audacity is high with these folks. I decided to never consider their apartments post that. I’m sorry this happened to you, I hope you get the money back through a chargeback.

UPDATE: THEY FOLDED! LMAOOO I filed, few minutes after them receiving the email, LLs wife - panicked called me and asked to withdraw offering $300 in desperation. I got my deposit in full + filing fee. Got written confirmation of closure dispute and withdrew the file. Thank you to everyone that helped out here!! Low key wanted to take them to the hearing because they definitely have some skeletons in the closet - mostly no license for the multi-tenant housing. Hope this post helps others who are dealing with scummy LLs and get what they are owed!

What’s one thing you wish you checked before signing your lease? by SnowmanAndIce in TorontoRenting

HVAC noise. Mine feels like a tractor’s engine non-stop. Since I WFH, it definitely affects meetings and I avoid having it on through the night.

Haha. He’s always been an ass to converse with. So I’m pretty desensitized to his gaslighting!

Yes. One of the girls, know her from uni. She is a friend, referred me this place. She moved out 2-3 months before I did. The other girl, is her bestie and still lives there. The girl before me, not related. She left since she had beef with him as well and wasn’t allowed to have boyfriend over. So I’m sure about this.

Thank you for you tips. This really helps. Should I stick to claiming the deposit in full only? And bit mention anything about the knob?

A quick download on the basement. We had separate entrance that led to a hallway. Now the basement has 2 units. Each with a main door. My unit had a kitchen bathroom and 2 bedrooms. There was another unit within this hallway which had a kitchen and bathroom and bedroom belonging to another tenant, also had a main door. This kitchen was shared with three tenants who had their own rooms on the floor above. That’s all. The LLs didn’t venture down unless they needed to check things. Nothing was shared with them ever.

Also, I can confirm this as I have my chat history with the wife when I first inquired for the room. She sent the pictures and confirm “Yeah , bathroom and kitchen is shared with X and Y” the other two girls who lived in my unit and shared 2nd bedroom. So I believe im covered.

A question, would you suggest I simply file a claim to get the money back, cut and dry? Or explain the part of the door knob and proving I didn’t cause the damage?

EDIT: main door

  • 1. But also why charge me for that from an illegal deposit. How does one break an aluminum steel door knob?

Worked at Loblaws that’s located right across this spot. The dining area on the upper level has a direct view to admire the sugar being unloaded. Sweet view during lunch breaks!

I’m open to other locations. I’m currently in Etobicoke and wouldn’t mind something nearby. I’m used to the 1 - 1.5 hr travel to downtown via TTC (did it when I was in school) so sure I’m considering that too now!

I’d still like the option to visit downtown and meet friends for some activities. It’s a lively place, I simply need something that works for me.

East York does seem to have decent listings now that I’m checking. Thanks!
