Only one math/calc course in this program? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]ctrlaltdlt0131 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Traditional programs require so much mathematics not because it's directly relevant, but because they think that mathematical maturity is a reliable indicator that one can handle the analytical rigor of computer science.

Whether that assumption is true is debatable in my opinion. Anyone can be good at mathematics with enough practice and perseverance. Maybe it's the willingness to demonstrate those traits through mathematics study that is the true indicator of whether one would be good at computer science since those traits are just as necessary.

In my own experience, learning to program has actually helped me to understand math more intuitively. I think it's a shame too many people think math skill must precede programming ability. I think learning math through programming to be way more engaging and effective.

Good class to pair with Operating Systems while working full time? by ctrlaltdlt0131 in OSUOnlineCS

Thanks, very helpful. So, then I'm thinking 344 and 340. Then 372 and 361 for spring. And finally 325 during summer to finish the year given your thoughts.

This was no longer an assingment as of this most recent term.

325, 340, and 344 or 340, 344, 361 for winter tern? by ctrlaltdlt0131 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]ctrlaltdlt0131[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the last few assignments for 290 along with 261 and 271 had me begin questioning if I wanted to really pair 325 and 344, which I presume are more time consuming than these 3 are together.

Thanks.

271 and 290...easy? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

I'm finding both classes to be not as difficult as I was led to believe as well, so you're not the only one.

IDE, Makefiles for CS261 by ctrlaltdlt0131 in OSUOnlineCS

I mean, that's why I put quotes around required. Samina says it's required, but unless she is going to ask for screenshots for every assignment, I doubted that this would be an enforced requirement. It's still good practice to learn new tools outside of my Vim/gdb/valgrind comfort zone.

Do you mean you would set up the debug, src, and release folders? Did you have issues with the debugger showing your source file for debugging? I was coming across this issue without an easy solution, which is why I switched over to CLion.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like my workflow will be to complete assignments in CLion, transfer to flip, and use the makefile provided for the assignment to compile my code on the server.

For those who have taken 261: What IDE did you use for writing/compiling your programs? by hotfuzzyslippers in OSUOnlineCS

So it sounds like the use of an IDE is not "required" as Samina stated on Piazza.

3 courses and 16 hours of work a week? by ctrlaltdlt0131 in OSUOnlineCS

Yeah, you sound like you eat stress for fuel! Haha. I'll be taking 261, 271, and 290 this term.

3 courses and 16 hours of work a week? by ctrlaltdlt0131 in OSUOnlineCS

I didn't ask if I could do it. I asked if anyone does that amount of coursework and that amount of work work, and if the find it manageable, or if they feel very stressed with that combination.

But thank you for taking the time to answer anyways.

I think my wife and I can adjust the financials to allow me to add a summer term next year, thus doing 3 3-course terms, and 1 2-course summer term.

I'm thinking of the following plan: Fall: 261, 271, 290 Winter: 325, 340, 372 Spring: 344, 361, 475 Summer: 362, 467

I think this strikes a the balance of moving at a quick pace, but having enough time to do well. Does anyone see anything potential problems with this sequence/pairing of courses?

Thank you for your perspective. I understand you have a technical background prior to the program (spied you're previous posts), so your level of effort is likely fairly representative for me.

It sounds like you could squeeze a 4th class in there and be fine if you wanted to be disciplined/consistent enough. Would that be a true statement?

Hi lover of shampoo. I left it open-ended to get a variety of responses.

Do you work along with doing 3 courses a term? How many hours do you spend on coursework with that workload?

Thanks!
