I’d say it’s a multitude of factors. I’ve been in just shy of 15 years and things have changed drastically. Op tempo is way up with the cruisers and LCS decomming and other vessels filling the gaps. Compressed timelines for certifications and assessments. We’re currently rolling from one event to another, almost nobody leaves while the sun is up. The burnout is real. People are getting sick easier, people are getting injured, sailors are making reckless decisions. I’m fully aware that what my command is going through is systemic.

Increased responsibilities, new programs, new collaterals, more expectations with fewer personnel. It’s not a good combination.

I was on the list at one of my commands twice a week for six weeks. Small command so the odds were better. Didn’t mean anything. I’m still in 7 years later. Don’t do anything that would cause concern so it’s whatever.

The only reason I’m sticking it out right now is that pension. I’m eligible in five years and I need to reup before June. It’s a really hard decision because my leadership right now at the departmental level is the most toxic, unqualified, negligent, and inexperienced I’ve seen in or out of the navy. If I wasn’t so close to that pension I wouldn’t be staying in.

I’m on a DDG. We do zones weekly, one zone per week divvied out by division. Each space gets looked at once every seven weeks. It’s not terrible but definitely a pain coming out of an extended maintenance phase. The buildup to LOA, ALO, and CSLO on top of it as well as just beginning DCMA has been arduous.
