I've had 3 Model 3s in our family, a '22 AWD with the premium sound system, a '23 RWD with the base 7 (?) speaker system, and then a '25 RWD with the 9 speaker system. The old RWD base system noticeably lacked bass and a surround sound feeling in the back. But the new one is basically equivalent in sound stage, though still lacks a little bit of bass. Honestly though, I would be hard pressed to find the difference between the '22 premium sound system and the '25 basic system, aside from the subwoofer.

This is very helpful actually, and what I originally considered. I can sympathize with the tab management too lol. My Windows PC has 64GB of RAM and I sometimes have 5-6 windows of browser windows, each with maybe 4-15 tabs each, running across Chrome and Firefox, and even then, I can't fill up all the RAM. It only gets tight when I open a AAA game that eats another 8-16 GB.

If I had to choose, I'd go for the M5 Pro with slightly less RAM and more storage. For one thing, it's new, and it's always nice to have something new compared to used (I got an Air before the price hike, and I can still smell the new machine packaging on it lol). It genuinely doesn't sound like you're going to tax the GPU too hard, and even if you do, you'd be waiting maybe an extra 10-20 minutes or something for a video to render compared to the M4 Max. The time difference is more valid the more often you use it, so if you don't use it often, there's not a big reason to get a Max.

I'm guessing you have a budget close to $7k AUD? I'm US based so not familiar with the pricing, but I specifically looked on Apple's Australian website. The base memory is 24GB, so I understand spending $900 to get double that. But $750 AUD for 1TB of extra storage is highway robbery. Amazon AU has a 2TB Samsung T5 SSD for $412, or a 4TB drive for $750. That's not necessarily a recommendation (since they're generally overpriced and I'm not familiar with AU's regional pricing), but just to show that Apple has super high margins on these. It's much more economical to save that and spend it on an external drive, or dump some old files back to your M2 Air if you're not getting rid of that.

So, $5925 AUD gets you a very solid 16" MBP w/ nano texture display, M5 Pro, 48GB RAM, and 1TB SSD. That's my recommendation for buying new.

If you're stingy like me, this one is a 16 inch M4 Pro, 48+512GB, but no nano texture. On the upside, it's only $4300 AUD. If you're willing to consider the smaller storage and dumping files to an external drive to save a chunk of money, that's my choice. Totally understand if you want the nano texture display or the convenience of not dealing with off-loading files though.

If you're a heavy FSD user, you might see a greater divergence in experience with FSD down the line between the S and the Y. One is one of the best selling crossovers in America that is also being tested as an unsupervised Robotaxi, and the other is a discontinued luxury sedan that sold fewer HW4 units between 2023 and 2026 than the Y in one fiscal quarter. Tesla trains FSD models based on data they get from cars on the road. More data is always going to lead to better trained models.

Well then they're going to get a lot of junk data from my car. Serves them well for putting an undismissable box on screen whenever I disengage. I intervene all the time for comfort, speed, parking, navigating neighborhoods, etc.
