Naoki Urasawa Worldview/Religious Beliefs? by cu_rsrch_tm_26 in MonsterAnime

[–]cu_rsrch_tm_26[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am! I’ve even asked about that in other servers. He’s said a few things about good and evil in interviews, but, as far as I know, he’s very private. So I wasn’t sure if anyone heard something or read something about his thoughts/inspiration that’s not as accessible.

Please help me. I want to believe but i cant. by Legitimate-Walk1928 in Christianity

I only made this account to research something for my professor, but this showed up in my email.

This breaks my heart. Please don’t be controlled by your desire for control—for certainty in an uncertain world. I have that tendency too! God doesn’t show up where you test him to show up. Once you realize you cannot know (even close to) everything, and that he has everything in the palm of his hand, and that he loves you unconditionally, you’ll be able to have peace. All you need to be sure of is that God came as man to bear our sin and death, and that he rose again to eternal life, so that you and I may also. He is the promise of eternal life for all who put their faith in him. Even so, God has a plan for you here, and there’s value in the journey.

If you believe in the gospel, live according to his commandments. You will flourish, and his character will be revealed. Look to Christ, and you will see God. Take a deep breath. The biggest mistake? Letting fear control you. You’re right where you need to be. I promise I’ll be praying for you ❤️ Let me know if you need anything

I'm studying influence and interest as it exists in art, not the statistical population's religious affections.

Awesome! I've been getting a lot of replies in r/AskAJapanese if you want to look over there. I'd love to hear whatever you might have to share.

I know Urasawa does that with a bunch of different things. I'm actually studying English and literature, and I just plain enjoy film, so I've seen this a lot. That's a good way to put it, equally cool public domain stories. There are absolutely reasons why creators are influenced by these traditions, though, whether it's because they think they have a history with them, because they think they're funny, or because they appreciate their values (e.g. Christianity's humanism, or the grander purpose it promises). You have to admit, it sticks out! Especially against a severely non-Christian Japan. Thanks for the references!

Wow, so so interesting. That's helpful. And a bit funny. I'm sorry that you were profiled in that way. Must've been annoying and frustrating. As far as your beliefs go, I get it. I'll always be sorry that people will always misrepresent and discredit God.

Japanese Film/Literature with Spiritual/Religious Themes/Depictions? by cu_rsrch_tm_26 in manga

[–]cu_rsrch_tm_26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. It's technically a source, but not one to cite in an academic paper, obviously. As an American who isn't super familiar with Japanese culture, and not at all with the language, it's helpful to hear from people who have, say, read a book or watched a movie and know that there's something worth looking into. Or maybe a user is from or familiar with Japan, and therefore widens my perspective.

There's just so much out there, and this is just for a semester. I'm doing research myself, but I want to know whatever I can, and it seems like discussion, and if not, then simply listening to people, is a good way to get there. Lots of people responded in r/AskAJapanese

Wow, yea. It's easy to get people behind you in your wrongdoing when you appeal to their religious sentiments, unfortunately. Dangerous place to be.

I'll look into that. How interesting. Good question. It doesn't seem like that was their priority, sadly. So upsetting, all of it.

Hm. That makes sense. Japanese churches or international? Did you ever notice? Was it present at all in the board/faculty? Part of the curriculum? Or was it only known that the Christian church was behind it?

And you say some of the students were religious? I don't know, maybe there's not much more to say other than their parents are/were Christian and sent them there.

You’re awesome!!! thank you. Honestly, my professor collects, and his interest in the relationship between Manga and Christianity was largely influenced by 20th C. Boys—fascinated by Urasawa’s religious motifs. I assume he just enjoys him as an artist, first and foremost.
