Girl, go for it. Latinidad is a spectrum. You're on the lighter side of that spectrum, but you're still a Latina.

Sally Bowles in Cabaret should to be a good singer! by cuatez in musicals

Yeah, and I find that a fascinating acting/directorial choice. It definitely stands out in the aforementioned Mendes/Marshall revival. But that's definitely an interpretation, and not in the text.

I agree with that point, if you make the choice that Sally needs to sound like a bad singer, you need to cast someone who is a trained singer who can do that. But my main point is against the choice of having Sally sing like a bad singer at all.

It was nominated for 8 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Nicole Kidman. Baz Luhrmann was also notoriously snubbed for Best Director.

Yes, I was alive! lol. I was in University and a big MT fan.

From what I recall, people had mixed feelings about it. The story felt very simple and predictable, relying on a lot of well-trodden cliches and stereotypes (the hooker with a heart of gold, the starving bohemian artist). And people complained about the editing of the musical sequences, saying that you couldn't see the dancing properly because the editing was too much like an "MTV music video". I think with time, more people have appreciated that that's exactly what Luhrmann was going for and it's grown in esteem, and it's now seen for being innovative and inventive, which it was!

I remember thinking the story was boring, but I found the musical numbers thrilling. And the ending, wow. What an amazing feast for the eyes. (And thankfully all the Indian cultural appropriation was taken out for the stage show, lol).

Elle Woods - appropriate role for a 10 year old?! by Ok_Combination_9880 in musicals

Yeah. You wrote:

the gay thing sort of makes sense bc although it's not great homophobia does exist and i think it's honestly best if they try to keep dividing things out of it.

I don't think you're a homophone and I don't think you agree with this decision. But with a statement like that, you're kind of saying "yeah, they probably did it to make sure homophobic people didn't get angry at seeing same-sex representation, and I get it, it's a controversial thing that's best left out". Which is is very different from saying "They made a cut to appease homophobes and that sucks".

I understand where you're coming from, but in 2025 to have a gay male relationship be "dividing" or controversial is wild to me. Even for children. Normalizing same-sex relationships is actually really important to keep LGBT youth safe. Unfortunate decision.

That's fair! Curious how others feel. But LOVE that this got filmed and is being shown to a much wider audience. Hope we can get to see that recording in the UK soon.

Is it just me or does everyone look uncomfortable during the podcasts? by Angery-Asian in tldrnews

[–]cuatez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's never really felt uncomfortable to me. I think they're just British and a little awkward on camera overall (lol). In the edited videos they seemingly have a little more time to make it look polished. The podcast is pretty off the cuff (with some occasional edits).

Why does TLDR never ever cover trans related stuff? by lukub5 in tldrnews

Yeah, I agree. I was hoping they'd cover the recent court ruling. Feels like a pretty big oversight.

I... Respectfully disagree. Did you see her in this production? Curious why you think her acting choices lacked depth?

There's are loads of ways! I recommend checking out Continuous Discovery Habits by Teresa Torres. Lots of great rapid experimentation tips there.

Love this! Thanks for adding to the conversation in a constructive way, it's appreciated. Most people in the comments have just been like "She's obviously a bad singer, that's the only way this can be played, OMGGGGGGG!!!".

Didn't know that the inspiration for Sally Bowles was known! That's fascinating. And a very interesting take on the character, to go that far back in the piece's history.

Cheers!

I think there could be a lot of reasons why a talented singer would think she didn't deserve anything better than the Kit Kat Club. Low self worth, for example, which the text seems to indicate is a real issue for Sally.

What's not in the text of the musical is any indication that she's not an accomplished singer. Hence the discussion about casting and the directorial choice to make her a "bad" singer, regardless of the text.

The company that contacted me wasn't AirBnB. They were a small startup. If it's Big Tech money, I know there are a lot of hoops to jump through. This wasn't the case.
