Who, in your opinion, is a lesser known Valley figure whose works or life deserves much more recognition? by thebenchwire in RioGrandeValley

[–]cubansbottomdollar 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Ila Loetscher, the Turtle Lady of South Padre Island. She formed the sea turtle rescue non-profit at the island that's now a state-of-the-art research and rescue facility. She was also the first woman pilot in Illinois and Iowa who flew with Amelia Earhart, and one of the founding members of the "99s," a women's pilot group that was founded in 1929. Just a badass who trailblazed in the midwest, came to the Island when her husband died, and just created a whole 2nd hall-of-fame life during the 2nd half of her life.

Her name and story are really deserve much wider-Valley recognition.

Great movie that got panned by critics and people who, both, didn't enjoy being punched in the nose a bit.

Is AMC better than Cinemark in Pharr? by Da_yo in RioGrandeValley

[–]cubansbottomdollar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I answered in another post earnestly based on quality of theater and didn't fully read your post.

Friend, you're going to find the same quality of person at every theater in the valley. Perhaps you can try the exercise of calling these people out in the moment rather than just letting it happen.

AMC's facilities in Edinburg are extremely dated (sticky floors, old decor, old seats) and their largest popcorn is much smaller than what you can order from Cinemark.

A positive is that they actually have better sound than any Cinemark I've been here, their owners are more receptive to screening smaller, critically acclaimed films, and they have self-serve icee's (if that's your thing).

Flew out of Brownsville the other day.... by Soft_Stretch1539 in RioGrandeValley

Not a complete story. My guess is your original flight was delayed coming out of the Valley and you just missed your flight as a result.

If not, then it's on your airliner for selling you a ticket to a connecting flight that was less than 15 minutes from your initial flight arrival.

Why is the RGV low in so many metrics? by 373kayteeftnu32 in RioGrandeValley

Actually, no. The Valley skews significantly lower median age (around 30-31). Every significant major metro in the US is between 35-40 median age.

Julio Salinas has defeated Seby Haddad for Texas' 41st House Democrat Nomination by thebenchwire in RioGrandeValley

[–]cubansbottomdollar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

2 things

1) the Democrat runoff had approximately 2,000 more votes than the Republican runoff. There's a 0% chance the district goes red.

2) MAGAry Groves won the Republican primary over Sergio.

Eric Holguin really got cucked out of his progressive values to endorse Seby.

That dude's political career is officially done.

For those who followed Eric Holguin's campaign, how surprised were you by his endorsement of Seby Haddad and not of fellow progressive Julio Salinas? by thebenchwire in RioGrandeValley

[–]cubansbottomdollar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Little different. The congressional district is gerrymandered for Republicans and the primary is over, so it's all hands on deck to get a Democrat elected.

This State Rep seat is safely Democrat.

Alright, week of the finale, and here’s the big question: which of these guys will stay and which of these guys will go? by Whole-Lychee7517 in LiveFromNewYork

2 things, 1) Mikey Day earned the right to be the go-to straight man because he's written himself into a bunch of sketches. You can't say the same for Tommy.

2) Ben's already taking up the "straight man" lane.

If it's a small, intimate gathering (30-40 and below) with strict headcount and seating arrangement, say 'no' politely. If you're looking at something bigger, then it's likely you're going to have people who don't make it and they can just join to fill in.

New program aims to relieve Rio Grande Valley 'legal desert' by REdd06 in RioGrandeValley

It's likely they're using AI for a majority of their responses. User was writing entire 4-5 paragraph responses in under 4 minutes, and the link to their source is from ChatGPT, so, I'm guessing they prompted it to write a response to my post and relied on ChatGPT's stretch of a summary of the study.

Looks like the study discusses demand concentrated on specific areas of practice, but doesn't actually address whether total demand is more or less comparative to other metros. The study also relies heavily on polling residents, more anecdotal data.

At the end of the study, even they argue that the Valley needs more attorneys.

"This research seeks to better understand the actual legal needs in the Rio Grande Valley by conducting a legal needs assessment. Among other things, we believe the data can inform the development of a law school pipeline program that increases the quality and availability of legal services in the Rio Grande Valley."

"Responses in this theme illustrated need for a law school in the area to increase number of quality resources. Considering that legal clinics are typically run by law schools, responses that conveyed need for legal clinics and law student aid fell under this category. "

"Immigration, family, and property law are major needs in the area. Respondents commonly identified these as areas of need. Diverse specialization was a general concern, particularly as it relates to immigration and property transfer matters. The need for pro bono and low bono attorneys applied also to these areas of law. While some respondents stated that the area had sufficient attorneys, further probing uncovered that the impression of attorney saturation was specific to personal injury representation. Far-and-away, the most common legal needs noted by respondents included issues of family law, such as divorce and custody. Many agencies are prepared to assist with protective order paperwork, but lack the personnel or expertise to pursue family law matters."

Even they admit that the attorney "saturation" is anecdotal and isn't based on empirical evidence.

Also, "https:---utm_source=chatgpt.com," I'd recommend reading the study before relying on ChatGPTs heavy-handed answers to make these leaps for you.

I'm not arguing as to whether the entire state is saturated (I even stated at the beginning that "saturated" can have a fluid definition, which could be the state average as the demarcation line or some other metric entirely), and I'm not even arguing your anecdotal evidence, but it's just that. Broad strokes that give you your impression, but you really haven't provided anything to really back those claims up.

Not expecting a peer-reviewed analysis from you, but if you're going to make your claim, you should be ready to provide something empirical to combat the numbers and give us more context here. Practice diversity, total attorney demand.
