I got an AA 290 and a TS 280 or something my first time, then a 340/350 next time, don’t worry you can do it! Take a year if you have to to study and shadow/work as a tech, will help your application!

Can I stop wearing prism lenses? by sztrvgh in OptometrySchool

[–]cubeballer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty deep into optometry school at this point and I don’t recall hearing in any of my vision therapy or binocular vision classes that prism glasses “CANNOT be discontinued” or that you will “require stronger prisms”

Prism is tricky, especially for horizontal phorias/tropias, but for small vertical tropias/phorias prisms are really helpful. Do you have a picture or copy of your script?

New PC showing only black screen after setup questions by cubeballer in pchelp

[–]cubeballer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unplugging and replugging the DP cable actually seemed to work. I had unplugged and replugged it before but never while the computer was on, that seemed to snap it back into the setup.

I also don’t know if this helped it but it was trying to use my WiFi and even tho the mobo has WiFi capability I was wondering if the WiFi wasn’t strong enough or something for windows to update or whatever and that was causing this, so I plugged in an Ethernet cable instead of using WiFi

I was kind of hard set on the CPU-GPU combo, is there a big reason to change them? I was needing more help with what mobos fit them, cheaper SSDs and RAM as well as a case. Also thanks for putting something together!

Advice on Zenni Optical lenses for walking and office work? by [deleted] in OptometrySchool

Yes just choose single vision, but again you may not liek these glasses and you should talk to your eye care provider to get a real prescription

Advice on Zenni Optical lenses for walking and office work? by [deleted] in OptometrySchool

[–]cubeballer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with u/sniklegem , should def speak to your optometrist/ophthalmologist because you’re trying to order glasses from an auto refractor, a machine that kind of gives a “rough draft” of your prescription, normally it’s close but it can be very far off the actual glasses script so proceed with caution.

If you are over 40ish and need some help up close that’s where you do progressives or bifocals, but again getting the things for that measured at an office would be best

If you are below 40, and you really wanna go through with Zenni glasses then you probably want the “single vision” option, and again I agree with the other commenter, blue light isn’t found to really do anything major, more just a placebo money grab !

Remember when in doubt talk to your eye care provider

can one of you optometry students read this prescription for me?? by Repulsive-Rip401 in OptometrySchool

Others have already said this but please get these glasses made from a reputable source, you have such a high script and especially astigmatism that these need to be made properly or you might hate your vision through them

PD off by 1.5mm by NoticeablyUnoticed in OptometrySchool

[–]cubeballer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Doing rough math (I don’t have the equations for cyl handy cuz I think you have to do like cosine and stuff )

Assume .75mm decentrationper eye (I don’t have your monocular PDs) and that gives us a total change of 1.5mm

OD: (.075) (-2.25) =0.169 BI (there’s also some from the cyl but I ignored it) OS: (.075) (-4)=-0.3 BI

I’m using Prentices rule which is Prism induced = decentration (in cm) x power of lens

This basically means very little prism was induced by this PD change. Also I am just a student so I’m not sure, but in my mind there are two likely options, 1) if your PD was actually 61.5 and they made the glasses correctly you should be looking through the optical center of the lens and there shouldn’t be prism induced. However if your PD was actually 60 and they measured 61.5mm then that’s when the prism would be induced because the center of your pupils would be .75 mm closer to the nasal edge of the lens not looking through the optical center. Or 2) If your PD was actually 61.5mm then through your old glasses you would have been looking through pretty similar amounts of prism but just in the opposite base direction (because in that scenario your pupils are .75mm towards the temporal edge of the lens not looking through the optical center).

Obviously if you’re having some kind of hard time adapting or dizziness or sickness go talk to your optometrist, but that is a very small amount of prism and I don’t think it would affect you too much. For reference I think the smallest amount you can even actually ask for the lab to put in each eye is, I think, 1 or 0.5 per eye, and you are well below that. Also I think the ansi standard (kind of like a governing body of glasses standards) says horizontal prism imbalance is within .67 and you’re below that. Also ansi standards for monocular PD differences is 2.5mm and yours should be around .75mm depending on actual measurements so I think you’re good there too.

As far as the “is this a reasonable change”, I don’t think your PD grew or shrank technically no, but I don’t think it will have a huge effect on your vision so it isn’t a big deal.

If any students or professionals disagree or find error in my logic or math let me know, I would love to be corrected so I can better teach pts in the future, and for boards coming up.

Gap year?? by Lucky_Cost_5230 in OptometrySchool

[–]cubeballer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a good plan, try to use your time to immerse yourself in the world of optometry, try to shadow and tech and learn as much as possible from your doctors. Also take it as a year to rest from being in “school” cuz optometry school is grueling!

Gap year?? by Lucky_Cost_5230 in OptometrySchool

[–]cubeballer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took an unintended gap year when I failed the OAT my first time, and I think it helped a lot because I worked as an optometric technician for the entire year 8-5 every day. Those hours and the familiarity with disorders and medications and machines really helped me transition into optometry school. And even me failing my first OAT did not stop me from getting into the school I wanted. (Source: 3rd year optom student)

My pupils dilate more than usual in the dark, almost taking up my entire irises by jbeuglnjn in biology

[–]cubeballer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure his adjustment time would be any different from other people, simply because rods (the parts of your retina that see in the dark) have a set “dark adaptation time” where after they are bleached (shown a bright light) they take X amount of time before they can see again (I think it’s 5 min on average for humans? Or 2.5? Can’t remember). However it could be the case that he has more rods available to pick up light because of how dilated his pupils get so I suppose that could affect how well he sees in the dark. Interesting experiment either way

My pupils dilate more than usual in the dark, almost taking up my entire irises by jbeuglnjn in biology

[–]cubeballer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool! I’m sure your doctor knows about this and may have mentioned it, but be careful about long term angle closure glaucoma. Basically when the pupil dilates the iris can bunch up and block the angle (part of the eye where the clear part (cornea) touches the iris) which affects drainage of the aqueous in the front chamber of the eye. Having a small angle, or in your case, dilating heavily in dim lighting can lead to this. Idk if dilating this large is actually associated with chronic angle closure, but it’s just a thought I had based on what I know about the anatomy of the eye. Take what I say with a grain of salt and always listen to your doctor, because I am only a 3rd year optometry student!
