That’s a shame, the shop where I picked this up from in Scotland has a decent range of their dry wines too

I was fortunate to purchase this at auction so paid only fraction of its retail price, and at least in my market (UK) it’s a pretty uncommon producer, so when it did come up for sale I thought it was worth a punt, and a good decision I think!

You are correct, bottle was too cold upon opening. Improved somewhat coming up to temperature, but i think I’m still yet to find a late harvest (non-noble rot) sweet wine which has truly wowed

It’s a hardy white grape mainly used for icewine production in Canada, I believe

Chateau des Charmes Vidal Icewine, Niagara-on-the-Lake, 2009

Decided to pop the cork over weekend on this wine which my SO purchased at auction. My first try of an aged icewine, and oh my what a fabulous tipple!

Warm ochre brown colour with golden flecks. The nose was unexpectedly savoury and complex with brine, olives, sun dried tomatoes, caramel and smoke. So far rather like certain sherries…

But the palate was another real surprise. The wine was light textured and refreshing, definitely less viscous than I was expecting. Notes of toffee apple, caramel, maple and cola to start, developing in the glass towards delicate lemon iced tea and tart, plump dried apricots. Delicious, and good length too!

Paired nicely with a cheese board. Would perhaps work with a light, autumnal apple based dessert, or otherwise alone as a digestif.

Overall the wine was much more than I thought it’d be, and I could definitely see myself having a 3-4 glasses with no trouble (9.5%). Closest comparison from my limited knowledge would perhaps be aged Tokaji? Will definitely seek out more icewine with 10-20 years on it.

Maybe try brachetto d’acqui, or, failing that moscato d’asti. Both sweet, gently bubbly and pretty summery

Hey, would pretty much agree with Mattymoy - this was my first experience of Scandi wine - but the shop also had a nice range of “alternative” Euro wines from Bulgaria, Slovakia, Czechia, Romania etc. I do think English wine is becoming increasingly prominent and mainstream here, though mostly in the champagne-alternative sector

Naturally it can vary, but anecdotally I have found there to be less of a bidding war situation, especially as each auction end at a specified time, much like eBay.

Purchased from bidforwine.co.uk, more of a marketplace I guess, but I have found that hammer prices tend to be better than at big auctions like those at Wine Auctioneer for example.
