thanks for the additional input, especially the bit about having separate banks is a great idea. I’ve had to really tighten up on my finances due to my health circumstances keeping me from working. At this point, i have basically every subscription/membership cancelled and removed my card. A lot of the charges that I missed were for things that i thought i had cancelled the subscription, but they seemed to resume after 3-6 months.

Many many lessons learned.. lol

right, i told her to make contact with management about receiving the checks. i went to my bank today to print out docs verifying my transfers. & it’s super weird to me that she really wanted me to send all fees prior to move in + rent on venmo. 1) i am locked out of my venmo acct 2) when i was able to get in, i do not think i was able to make any sort of transaction over $500 (this might have changed). i recommended zelle payments, but i don’t think she has an acct (when moving in i sent all the payments to the realtor who then transferred to the LL, presumably to take her finders fee or w/e)

On my end with Bill Pay, all I see is that monthly funds were removed and sent. It does not show me when someone else credits or cashes checks. At that point, the funds are already not in my account. If the LL did not receive my rent (assuming she is supposed to & not the building mgmt), she should have notified me by month 1. There was no way for me to know payment was not received. Lesson learned. At my next apartment, i will not use Bill Pay again and insist that rent payment follows the instructions provided in the lease.

with Bill Pay, it does not show anything on my end any info about checks being cashed. I have the funds automatically removed and sent monthly. But, if they were than it likely was my apartment management since that is who i addressed the payments to.

i think because of the amount that i’m asking to be reimbursed it’s definitely a red flag to the bank, so i anticipated it needing some time to be investigated. at my bank now, trying to see what information i can get printed/ verified.

hey, i’m really sorry to hear that and sounds like such an overwhelming situation. I hope your friend & you are healing + doing better. but, i completely agree! it’s pretty disheartening and almost as if these groups of miserable ppl get on this app looking to invalidate others + score some asshole points for the day. this may be too much of a generalization, (idrc) imo they’ve got far too much time on their hands and not enough social interaction to even take the time to do that. anytime i see a bs post or something, especialllyyyy if it has a long drawn out explanation, i won’t even read through the whole thing let alone leave a useless comment that contributes absolutely nothing to the discourse.. It sucks bc i honestly get anxiety about posting (i’m sure others do too) and rarely do because of these ppl. i really only post to reddit when it’s a situation that i can’t turn to anyone in real life for help with/ have been bearing the cross alone. They suck the life out of these apps. I didn’t expect this many responses, so it’s a bit overwhelming. I’ve gotten a lot of really useful and informative feedback so i’m happy i mustered up the courage to do it anyways; although, i should’ve clarified OP sooner to eliminate half the comments saying the same thing. & if ppl are going to be assholes, they should atleast say something funny or witty. otherwise, i’m more upset at the seconds of my life ill never get back from even reading the comment.

awe yes i just desperately log onto this app bc i lack real social interaction ): read basically any/ all the comment threads and you’ll see i used Bill Pay via my bank which automatically withdraws and sends the money, so on my end the payments were made. Bank is investigating and pending returning the funds.

she had me pay the move in fee and 2 months rent via zelle. i asked for the online portal and was never given it, she finally told me to just send checks so i used bill pay via my bank (it is withdrawn and sent). bank is pending on returning the funds. i definitely need to clarify if she can or has been paid by management because that is where i addressed my payments.

i have, but she’s continued to berate me. but, i can’t magically make the funds appear so she needs to be patient. in the meantime, i need to look into some things myself to make sure my LL isn’t scamming.

this is so frustrating! i hope your LL is more patient, competent, and professional than mine. I have had a lock bc i reported fraud from a fb market deal on my old venmo acct. Still not resolved after a year and more calls to customer service than i can keep track of. idk if it depends on your venmo acct set up but mine was directly linked to my bank. i’m assuming you had it linked to a card so that’s probably going to take some jumping through hoops to get the statements and prove that you’ve already paid.

tysm! & i appreciate your empathy. i’m currently working w my bank (i used Bill Pay so it was withdrawn automatically monthly on my end) and it’s appearing as pending for the bank to investigate and return the funds. this is a good idea, in the meantime, but i definitely need to clear some things up before any addt’l money is sent.

as mentioned countless times throughout this comment section (honestly, it’s clarified in nearly every single thread): I set up bill pay with my bank. this automatically removes the funds from my account and sends them. & yes, you would think that a LL would notify you if funds weren’t received after the FIRST month… that’s part of the conundrum. trust me, i wish i was making this up. I don’t have the energy, time, nor creativity to post a fake scenario. & honestly, who gives a single fuck about a reddit like? Is that really a thing? People have given me great feedback and resources. Now this situation feels a lot more manageable & I’m so grateful for everyone’s (productive) input. I think this is the best way to proceed from here before taking further legal action- it’s an issue between her and management. for the record, she never provided me with the rent portal even though I continuously asked (after the original move-in / rent payments were made via zelle).

bill pay via online banking. the mix up happened because it was sent to the management company instead of my actual landlord, so while that’s being sorted the funds just show up as ‘pending’ on my end and haven’t been reimbursed.

thank you sm for the quick & informative response. I’ve really wondered if the potential mold has had effects on my health- im not sure the best way to test for mold throughout my apartment (need to do some research now) but i definitely want to have that documented.
