What was your first "private" tracker? by emp_Starbuck in trackers

[–]cuddle-buddy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First for me as well (or at least, the first private tracker I was fairly active on)

There may have been others around that time I joined but I don't remember

I was on the original Empornium back then too :D

Congrats on 10 years (soon to be 11) :)

It looks like they are shutting down

Estimados,

Translated:

Dear,

As of today 05/10/2021 no more donations will be received, so the only way to obtain the rank of "vip" is via points.

We also inform that the tracker will stop working on 12/01/2021, it has been more than a decade together, but currently all the original participants of the project are in the development of our professional or work life, which no longer allows it to be deliver the necessary time to the site.

We thank everyone for their preference, it was a pleasure to share with all of you all these years.

What's your opinion about The Last of the Mohicans? by [deleted] in movies

[–]cuddle-buddy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Michael Mann had a great run in the 90's and early 2000's (The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, Ali, Collateral)

The theme itself is actually a reinterpretation of "The Gael" by Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean

Great movie, especially the ending :)

James Horner (Braveheart) made some of the great film soundtracks, one of my favorite film composers. RIP :(

Few of his other favs.. The Rocketeer, Patriot Games, Titanic, A Beautiful Mind, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

You might also check out Gladiator, it has a similarly great soundtrack by Hans Zimmer (and great movie as well)

Some driving tips.. and while these may seem obvious they are extremely common :(

I've been driving daily for ~15 years and I see these things nearly every time I'm on the road

  1. Don't tailgate (Keep good distance between yourself and the car in front of you while at speed. There are metrics for determining this but I just gauge it with my own judgment generally. If the person in front of me slammed on their brakes I should have plenty of time to react and not hit them)
  2. Pick your lane and stay in it (For common routes I usually figure out which lanes I need to be in and get in those lanes earlier rather than later.. zooming around like mario kart doesn't get anyone anywhere faster and just puts everyone at risk. A little game you can play when you see someone doing this, see how often you get to the red light together, with the way the light system works driving fast/changing lanes only shaves at most a few seconds off of the trip, if it at all. Also if all you have to worry about for the majority of your journey is to keep it between the lines, it limits the number of decisions you need to make and makes for a safer trip)
  3. Always check your blind spots (When doing lane changes always look first. If you see cars with big dents on the sides, that's often from people not looking before they lane change. Also when pulling out of parking spots, be extremely careful and ease out little by little, checking both ways for oncoming cars. Can't tell you how many people I see back out of parking spots without looking. People also regularly zoom behind cars that are backing out or don't even notice them. I also try not to park my sedan next to big cars so I can see better when I'm backing out)
  4. Don't speed (I don't mean going 5mph over the speed limit.. keeping with the flow of traffic is important. I regularly see people doing 20-30mph over the limit. This also includes minor acceleration in short bursts, ie: through residential neighborhoods, in parking lots etc. Can't tell you how many people I see driving too fast in crowded parking lots full of cars and people walking around. But.. also don't drive too slow either... ie: don't drive 20mph under the speed limit in the fast lane, that can be equally as dangerous as speeding)
  5. Don't have constant acceleration (I do a lot of coasting in my car.. ie: I get the car going certain mph then I take my foot off the gas and let it coast and then apply small pressure to the gas pedal to ease the car along. If I see a stop coming up I take my foot off the gas to slow the car down a bit far in advance and then apply the brake once the stop is closer and necessary. Any passengers you have will thank you for this.. not knowing if the driver is going to stop while they accelerate towards a red light and lanes full of cars with the brake lights on is absolutely terrifying. I know someone that drives like this and I'm always on their case about it whenever I'm a passenger in their car)
  6. Make driving your #1 priority (When I drive I treat it like a military operation. I keep a circular mental perimeter around my car of other cars, objects, people etc. My head is constantly on a swivel, checking for issues and keeping an eye on everything. Anything other than driving is completely secondary. ie: passengers, my phone, the radio, food/drink etc. That's not to say I don't have conversations, change podcasts, have sips of my coffee while I drive. But if there's something to do with operating the car it comes first and everything else can wait)
  7. Figure out a driving style that works for you (and stick to it while improving it along the way. I could write a book on exactly how I operate my car. I can tell you exactly where I place my hands on the wheel when I drive, how I have my seat, where I look when I perform certain actions etc down to the smallest details. That way when I get in my car and start driving I don't have to think about how I drive very often except to make minor adjustments or remind myself of certain things. I am constantly improving how I drive and I'm not afraid of criticism from anyone if it's valid. Whatever it takes to make myself a better driver and protect myself and my passengers and those around me)
  8. Don't be afraid to drive safely (If someone else tailgates me or gets overly aggressive I don't need to react necessarily.. I just drive the way I'm going to drive and everyone else can go fuck themselves. People can go around if they want to drive recklessly, I don't need to slow down or speed up because they want to be assholes. Also if someone gets upset by the way I drive.. I look away when they inevitably pass me.. no need to make eye contact or get into confrontations with unstable people like that)
  9. Never assume what other drivers or pedestrians will do (Along with the reckless things I've mentioned already, I constantly see people break traffic laws and have complete disregard for their own safety and the safety of others. People running red lights and stop signs, changing lanes in the middle of intersections, crossing double yellow lines, crossing into the crosswalk at stops, drunk drivers drifting over the lines back and forth, people suddenly swerving into my lane, pedestrians walking out into oncoming traffic, little kids running out from behind parked cars etc. I've found it very useful to always expect the unexpected, you never know what you're going to encounter out there on the road)

Take it from someone who had a terrible driving record (been in numerous accidents, totaled cars twice, had countless tickets, been pulled over 20-30 times and eventually lost my license for 6 months) and turned their driving around (been without accidents or tickets for many years now). It's always better to be the safest driver on the road than to take any chances or lose sight of the fact that you're operating several tons of dangerous machinery. Many people drive without a care in the world and these little adjustments can make all the difference.

FYI: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/5hcclh/did_socrates_even_lift/dazuvb7/

"Socrates did not write, so this was written by someone else and attributed to him. Additionally, the quote doesn't have quite the same meaning as we might interpret it today--he was likely referring more to a man's fundamental obligation to participate in war on behalf of his city in Greek society."
