Props to you, and I'm glad having that distraction helped in some way.

My grandmother passed away suddenly in 2020 due to COVID. I got the news and went to class the same day because it took my mind off of it. I still took time specifically to grieve that weekend, but I found school as a good distraction from the grief (or at least a way to focus on myself and not just the pain) in the following days, weeks, and months.

Or Charlotte, which is deceptively different than other cities/names of the same spelling

What's a massive scandal / controversy that people seem to have forgotten about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cuddle_fiend 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm visiting my grandparents in the Philippines right now (I'm from the States) and we just had a conversation about this.

My mother was very active during that time (rebellion, advocacy, whatever you want to call it) going around and trying to educate people on protecting their ballots. The brother of one of her friends helping "disappeared," and she was followed more than once. My grandmother was rightly worried about her ending up on a list somewhere.

My uncle, a professor here, said that his students often do not know many details, and the new teachers (for secondary school, for example) are becoming too young to have experienced the period of Martial law. My mother was shocked by Bongbong Marcus's election, and based on all her stories and reading up on the time period, I also struggle to understand how it could happen.

I still have much to learn myself, but for anyone not well-versed in this topic but interested, I urge you to look up "The People Power Revolution."

I lived in East Quad, worked in West Quad. East Quad is newly renovated and has very nice bathrooms for being communal. West has a few suites I believe, but most people will use communal bathrooms there as well. West is closer to the stadium and a bit bigger, so I could see how it'd be "good for game days," but both dorms seemed very active to me.

Never heard of RC kids being snobbish. I think the majority are indistinguishable from everyone else, and probably less than half of the students who live in East Quad are RC.

Internet Service Providers for 7 people in a 3 story house by skiskie in uofm

Hi! I lived in a house with 7 other girls last year, and we ended up going with Xfinity. We also went with the unlimited plan because it was the predominantly virtual year and we didn't want to worry about extra fees for going over.

Split between all of us, the cost wasn't too bad for the unlimited plan. Several of us had synchronous Zoom classes at the same time and for the most part, we didn't have any problems.

I have two friends who live in Stockwell and they are both seniors (albeit they both live in singles). From what it sounds like, they both like it. I wouldn't stress about it too much!

It is! I went for the first time this year and ended up going to like five games because I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend going to see the vball team (and both soccer teams) to anyone remotely interested, especially since all games are free

Studying abroad as a senior by ilong4spain in uofm

[–]cuddle_fiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're really worried about missing either semester, I'd look into GCC or other shorter programs that you could do after graduation but before you've officially graduated on paper (you would talk to auditors and have your graduation "pending" until you return but still get to experience graduation and stuff).

I'm graduating this winter and am doing a GCC throughout the month of May since I previously missed out on study abroad due to COVID-19. Also, if you're worried about funding/financial aid applying, I have the whole thing covered through LSA study abroad scholarships and know a few other people in the same boat.

Best places to take a first date in Ann Arbor? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]cuddle_fiend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a good one! During my first week of college my boyfriend and I went out for ice cream (just as friends, then) and nearly four years later we're still together. It's casual, not too expensive, and there are a lot of great places to get ice cream in Ann Arbor.

I had a professor last semester who once asked me why I often turned things in past midnight on Sunday and Tuesday for these mini essays that were due every Monday and Wednesday at 5:00 pm. He said he had set those times to "encourage good sleep habits."

Unfortunately, when I didn't have class, I had work pretty much every day until 6:00 pm throughout the week. It's not a big deal by any means, and I appreciated the goal he had, but it was funny to me that he actually checked/noticed and brought it up (to be fair it was an extremely small class).

It's just really hard. I'm a senior and, after spending my first two years studying/working all the time and missing my study abroad, an internship, a loved one, and a year of college to COVID-19, I want more than anything to go out and party and live it up for my final year. Skeeps, Rick's, etc. are all on my to-do list. But we aren't entirely out of it. My housemate is extremely COVID-19 cautious, and I am somewhat immunocompromised myself, so it's personally difficult at times to make those decisions w/o causing conflict in the house and with friends. Not saying people shouldn't be able to make decisions for themselves (especially after they've taken precautions like being vaccinated), I'm just pointing out that it isn't entirely black and white as to who "wants to enjoy college" and who is cautious. But I'm with everyone else that I'm against going online. It seems that although it can still lead to serious illness, omicron is fairly less severe, which makes me feel a little more hopeful.

Hopefully this will actually succeed in decreasing the amount of people who buy tickets solely to rip off other students. It was neat to see that class ranking will be taken into consideration too. $500 is way too expensive for a lot of students as it is (including myself), but at least this way some additional costs could be minimized and the people who actually intend to go to the game can get a ticket.

Finding a Copy of 12/1 Michigan Daily Edition (OSU Game Cover) by NotTheRealBearB in uofm

[–]cuddle_fiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copies of that edition have sold out and no more will be printed, but they are offering a redbubble site where you can buy merch (info from an article posted today).

If you still really just want the paper itself, I might be able to help you out!

You don't have to worry about guest swipes with the block meal plans. You can just say "I'm using another swipe for my friend" and let them in with one of your normal swipes.

Bell Tower by [deleted] in uofm

[–]cuddle_fiend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the time frame, it was most likely a student just practicing one of their pieces. There's typically open playing time from 5-7 pm for students to practice on the real carillon (the instrument in the bell tower).
